Catching Rainbows to Cook at South Lake (Bishop, CA)

I beach my boat to seek out some shade and catch a few nice Rainbows to cook. I bait fish and give a little general instruction.

South Lake is currently drawn down for some work they've been doing on the dam. It's really low but there is still solid fishing in it. The inlet creek and inlet area toward the back of the lake are really good now. I have clips for it on my 'backcountry lakes and creeks' playlist. Those aren't in the true backcountry but you have to hike back there to reach them so that's how I categorized the content. When the lake fills up, that awesome creek will be under water.

I love it too. They have kept it low for a few years now. I think it's an issue with the dam. I've been fishing the inlet creek in the back the last couple of years and it's awesome for wild brooks, browns, and rainbows. It might be underwater after all of the snow this year. I'm ready to fish whatever is there when the snow clears!

Dude! Went to lake Sabrina today and caught 4 rainbows from 6am to around 11ish. Then we went to south lake mid day and found the worm inflator I told my wife to get after watching your videos. Couldn't find it at Sabrina until we stripped my pack at South lake to be lighter because the lake looked like it was a ways off. Actually wasn't far at all from the upper parking. Caught 4 nice cold water alpine rainbows in half an hour! INFLATE YOUR WORMS! And set your spit shot about 4 feet above your hook. Would of limited out for sure but a nasty storm chilled us to the bone. Thanks again, my wife and kids had a blast today!

Right on. A lot of the stuff I do is a bit unorthodox but it mostly comes from years of trying stuff out. I figure just pass it on. One thing I would recommend to anyone who doesn't have a ton of experience fishing alpine lakes and reservoirs is to keep making adjustments in the face of slow fishing. Alter the speed of your lure retrieve or add, change leader lengths or depths. maybe add a small piece of power bait to the top of the hook your full nightcrawler is on, or add a jerking motion to some lures. Sometimes a subtle change can initiate a strike! Thanks for checking out my channel and I hope to bring you a lot more fishing in the days to come.

Right on. South Lake is at around 10,000 feet elevation and I think it;'s closed until trout season in April (I think last weekend).Depending on how hardcore you and your vehicle are and how much snow falls, getting there might be sketchy for a while. That is if we are, in fact, talking about the same place! I would have to imagine there is more than one lake by this name. Personally, I hit the lakes around 6,000 feet during the winter depending on the roads. My 4x4 has little clearance so I can't drive in deep snow. If I can ever answer any questions you have about any of my clips please don't hesitate to hit me up in the comment section. This clip is for Southlake above Bishop but I have several clips for Lake Tahoe on my lakes and reservoir playlist. I also have other fishing destinations in the Tahoe area on that playlist. If you go to my fishing tips playlist, my clips "rigging up for reservoir trout" and "My general technique for deep water reservoir trout" both show in detail how I rig up for bait fishing for trout from shore. I bump the slip sinker to 1/2 OZ and shorten my leader to help cast farther. I go into those adjustments I make at the end of my clip "Line stripping rainbows from shore at Lake Tahoe". Basically for Lake Tahoe, try to find at least 15 feet of water you can reach, be ready for large boulders inside and out of the water, and reel in fast with your rod high to avoid snags when you are checking your bait. Good luck.

I kill them and pack them in snow. Usually clean or filet them before I head out. I've done both over the decades and either way, I don't taste a difference as long as I get them packed in snow right away. I don't do much fishing where I keep fish at times when there is no snow anywhere available to fill my cooler with. Typically pull over on the side of the road and grab it when I see it later in the Spring. Thanks for tuning in.
