Liberty Scraps
Here is some progress on my Liberty Scrap Piecing Project, inspired by Karen at Just Get It Done Quilts. She makes really bright and joyful strips like this. The Liberty fabric is more subtle and incredibly beautiful. Using it in this way means I will never waste a single scrap! But what to make with them? Not sure yet, but just making them is enough for now!

Kate, so sorry about Norma’s loss. What a lovely and loving cat she was. I so enjoy your channel. My mum was born in Scotland and you put me in mind of my Scottish Nana whose name was Agnes like your granddaughter. I feel so at home visiting your channel and you are a good virtual friend for me as I too live alone with my miniature dachshund and am a quilter. Thanks for enriching my life from afar.

I just found this channel on KZread and feel like I’m sitting on the green sofa with you and Kate! I live in Michigan in the US and up until two years ago had a beautiful cat named Enzo Girl who was my companion and just like Kate’s Norma was my everything!
I love when you mention other KZread channels like Just Get it Done and Missouri Star!
I have not sewn for well over 10 years but what a huge difference you tube must have been. I bought many many books but it was a very isolated hobby then, little sharing of tips etc. at the time of course it was the norm, unless you were able to meet up with other like minded stitches. I’m finding a new excitement thanks to you and you tube.
It’s so fun to have ladies around the world able to sit on the lime green couch together! I love hearing about your weather and what keeps you busy. I also enjoy Karen with just get it done and Missouri star ladies. Thank you for sharing!

Oh you have to have many projects; they say that a change is as good as a rest, after all! So sometimes I crochet a doily or darn a sock or repair a bedspread that got a tear in it, and I refer to cotton dishcloths as my 'palate-cleanser' when I need a break from a more-challenging project. At least we'll never be bored, eh?

The scraps can be a filler for a cat or dog bed, if not for yourself or family then for the humane society. Something washable. It's so great having you back on track doing a dozen projects at once.

Hi 👋 how are you doing today
There are so many ways to lay out the strips of strips. Turn them into blocks, cut diaganally into HSTs, use them for borders or sashings, alternate directions of square blocks of them like Rail Fence blocks or checkerboard. Yes, a worthy project. ))) Pet all the kits for us.
I love having extra projects on the side. Sometimes I just need to do some mindless sewing. Enders, scrappy fabric making and the ticker tape sewing.
Just found you! So down to earth and ‘homely’ I’m addicted so will see you soon. What a lovely place to chill out and do your thing. Xxx

I love Karen at Just get it done. Just started quilting and I really love your channel too , it’s like having a friend ❤
Oh Heavens!, I'm with you . . . why stick to one project when three or four are waiting in the wings. (Also a big old trunk but we won't mention that!!!). Thank you for the lovely video.
My newest stray cat looks very much like your 'helper'. I'm doing some crumb piecing while I am listening to you, so this video is quite appropriate! Karen and MoStar inspired me as well. Although I do take something special, like a flower, a tiny pirate head, animal head, and work it into the quilt, along with the occasional HST, or use a flying geese block that looks like a roof on a 'house'. Something to tell kids to look for! EDITED to add: I watched that video of Jenny at Missouri Star right after I had a bone in my left hand removed (it was very arthritic). Soooo...I couldn't put any pressure on my hand to hold a ruler down to cut...but Jenny saved me with the crumb quilting. I had shoe boxes of scraps that I merrily sewed together. I couldn't use my thumb, but I got the hang of holding small pieces of fabric between my index and middle fingers. I also learned to tie my shoes without using my thumb for a week or two. Much better now. I loved the crumb quilting so much! Memories. It's useful. It's beautiful.
Agnes’s quilt is my favorite project of your. It is beautiful and I can hardly wait to see the final finish.
Enjoy watching you on Sundays!!! Your use of color is inspiring. When I have very skinny little bits of fabric I put them in a suet cage along with hair from my hairbrush and let the birds use them in their nests. I got the idea when I looked into a nest and saw a little piece of ribbon woven into the nest. Have a great week!

I do the same Diane ,but I do make sure my hair is in short pieces. I was horrified a couple of years ago to watch a camera in a blue tits box .the parent got human hair wrapped around its foot. It became trapped, human hair so strong .fortunately the owner of box managed to go in and sort it .I have been very cautious ever since ,I dread to think what harm I have caused previous to seeing the footage. I think it's still on utube .?

I have been having a big problem with quilting during b the pandemic. In the past I quilted with others. Now there is no one to quilt with. And I have no creative energy to quilt it has been almost two years now. I have tons of fabrick, but no desire to create. Bye the way I use the small scraps to make dog beds. I use soft and warm for the out side fabrics and I stuff with the leftover scraps. That way it is totally washable and dry able. The dog can scratch the stuffing to go what ever way and every body is happy I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL.. HUGS FOR ALL YOU DO FOR US.
As I sit here knitting calmly Missy sitting on the arm of my chair waiting to be stroked watching you sew I, m at peace with the world. I've been going through other videos and came across taking care 9 where you talked about knitting technique. I knit quickly and do so by tucking my right needle under my arm, the left loose, I hardly have to move my fingers as I wind the wool over. It might be called Irish knitting but I, m scottish and this is how my mum taught me. I probably haven't explained it very well and I, m not confident enough to make a video of how I knit though I've been knitting for 65 ish years. Xx
I'm smiling over here while listening and watching you enjoy the bonus material. I've come to realize and embrace the fact that I have way more enjoyment and creativity when I have a pile (or piles) of bits and pieces. Making fabric. If I lived closer to your part of the world, I would most definately shop your bits and pieces. Happy sewing this week, Kate. Agnes is going to love her quilt. A lifetime of exploring the fabrics and the love that you have created for her. Priceless. Happy stitching.
Kate, your hexi quilt looks like a painting! I love those colors. Always a pleasure to see what you're up to. I look forward to watching each week... so relaxing and inspiring.

I have a super clump of snowdrops in their full glory, bless them 🇮🇪
I don't do much sewing these days, my machine is hinky. But there is something so cathartic (is that the right word?) about watching you sew away and have a good chit chat - especially these days with all the crazy noise from the politicians and other mind boggling goings-on. Thank you Kate, your house is such a wonderful retreat, for mind and soul!
I love your Sunday afternoon videos! Please do continue to come up with creative things to do with scraps, I love challenging myself to keep as much out of the landfills as possible.

I love seeing cat Rita. She's doing a good thing, little sweetie. The music was beautiful. Love from the snowy Massachusetts coast.
I am so happy to see you sewing again. Looking forward to spring and seeing you out in the garden! Also looking forward to Anna's quilting project!
I’ve seen where you can take longer scraps and hang them on tree limbs and birds add them to their nests. Making a pretty nest for all to see!
Hi Kate, it’s great you have these scarps and make an Art Quilt Or Make a Blue quilt with landscape- lots of ideas- I’m so glad you don’t thru them away- ❤️💕Thanks! - another idea is a Milleforie Quilt -
Agnes's quilt is beautiful! Something I'm sure she'll treasure forever. Before you blink she'll be sewing with you and starting on her first quilt! I made a queensize quilt with the method Jenny uses for scraps. It is all batiks because I could never part with my scraps and whenever I saw a good sale on batik fabric I was compelled to "build my stash". I was making and selling tote bags at the time and saved every scrap. I did use some fat quarters when I realized that I was going to actually make a quilt - I like you need more than one project going - and the scrap blocks were my fill in. I did cheat and buy a 1/2 yard of yellow batik when I ran out of yellow scraps very early on. I backed it with linen and it is on my bed summer and winter it always cheers me up but if it gets too bright I flip it to the natural linen side for a bit. I'm going to start the leaders and enders - I always just used scrap pieces and sewed randomly just as easy to sew a quarter inch and make it productive! Thank you I'd never seen this before.

Hi 👋 how are you doing today
An idea for your strip piecing..some time ago I made a quilt for my sister using strip sets similarly to those you are making. I sewed strips together to make a center square, then surrounded it with white. The next round was strip set, again followed by white. I continued this way until it was the size I wanted. You could, of course, use any color you wanted to replace the white I used. The binding was also scrappy. You could alternate your pink and blue if you wanted. Have lots of fun quilting!

I’m so happy to be on the lgs and enjoy Agnes’s beautiful quilt. It does make me think of Monet’s water lilies paintings, as I think someone already commented. Christi, Washington state
I went to the kitchen tonight - it was so bright that I thought the outside light was on - no, it was the moon! it's full here this week in Southern California and if I get up early enough, I'm told that we can see Venus really brightly in the sky just before the predawn light begins. Since I've been waking at ridiculous times anyway, I hope to remember tomorrow. Loads of brilliant ideas today Kate. It's fun to see you excited again. All the best. I'm off to sleep now.

I love Agnes’s quilt. It is a work of art.
Loved this, Kate! I think Norma is not only missed by us.
Your scrap strips on your paper would make fantastic keyboard style border
Ever made fabric rope with those long strips of scraps? You can use fabric rope for all sorts of things but my favorite is making rope baskets. A rope basket from liberty scraps would look so lovely!
I’ve always got three or four projects on the go at once but I thought I was the only one! 😂 Agnes’s quilt is truly a work of art, I love it. Thankyou Kate as always for a great video. Xx
You could also use a few scraps as filler in your Christmas boxes…or other shipping items. Very creative with so many ideas already!
Me again, I've just come acroosss the taking care videos, I, m at number 3, and I so wish I had known about your channel at that time. I've had such a hard time with this covid madness and have become a recluse as I suffer from depression and anxiety. So thank you Kate xx
Never really understood there was a future usefulness for leaders and Enders until now. I use a leader or ‘sewing spider’ when doing general sewing, but am now going to be more productive by sewing squares ‘together’. Thanks Kate. Lovely video.
Hello Kate, I’m missing my sewing room as we sold our house and are not yet settled into our new home. I enjoy watching your videos so much and yes! Feel so fortunate to have so many fine quilting videos to watch on you tube - you among them! Thank you for sharing! ❤️
I never understood 'leaders and enders' so thank you for that. I love your idea of tying up your garden posies with the fabric strings. Won't need a scare crow. I get so excited when I see you've posted. Seems you're back to your old self. Glad to have you drop by the lime green couch for a visit, and giggle with us for a bit. Much love. Lynn
Hi Kate, love your podcast and visiting with you. I wondered if your Liberty strips would make great sashing between solid color squares in a quilt, ie light/med blue. Also, if you never watched “Stitches by Julia”, you might want to take a peek. She is a wonderful creative lady too and has so many scrap ideas that might be of interest to you - to make beads, lace, fabric, etc. You give me great inspiration. Take care and all the best!! She ( miss kitty ) has Normas anointing! They love you!
I saw that same Missouri star video you mentioned and I’m doing the same as Jenny with my scraps. Very addictive!
I’ve listened along whilst making my 10” scrappy blocks. I started these last November and was delighted when Jenny of MSQC was doing the same and now you too Kate. I decided I’d have an early night but just couldn’t resist putting some more pieces together. It’s very addictive!

Hello fro derp snow Canada 🇨🇦 hope to snow drop soon i hope!! Thank you for your great visit. Yes scraps got to love them! Thanks great ideas. Anita hi to everyone LGS.
Lori Holt is a big fan of secondary quilt blocks. She's always making a bonus quilt. I have started doing it as well because I don't like the wasted thread.
OH , they would make a beautiful reversable shopping hand bag ! Can't wait to see what you create !
Love Agnes’ quoilt! The colors are soooo beautiful put together. It will be an heirloom for sure 💜💙💚
I would chop them up and use them for stuffing for soft toys for Agnes. You could also make your own pillow forms with them and use one inside a paper-pieced special nap pillow for Agnes. That way you could take the pillow form out and just wash the paper pieced pillow bit when you need to,. Also, take a handful of really fine bits and put them somewhere where the birds could get at them for nest lining.
I am loving your strip sets of red and blue. I'm trying to get a handle on my scraps. I used my tiny tiny leftovers from a quilt I made and decoupaged a few metal containers to put in the room with the quilt. It adds a bit of color that coordinates with the quilt. I can put pencils, etc in the containers, too, and put in my sewing room. You can do this with plant pots and put them on the table in the garden in Summer. Sweet Rita is just so beautiful. The Agnes top is looking gorgeous. I love my garden in Winter. I like to see it taking a nap till warmer weather. Have a wonderful day!
Great idea for the fish 🐠 and chips scraps packages. Will definitely be on the lookout. Thank you for taking the time to make the packets.
I do love Karen from justgetitdonequilts as well. And you've re-inspired me to continue the strip sets and I love the idea of the small squares for leaders and enders. And last but not least , Agnes' quilt is so lovely can't wait to see it completed
Kate, you did say you don’t like to use the smallest scraps for stuffing things, but consider making cat or dog pillows for donation to animal shelters. I make cat pillows, 20” x 20”, sewn with 3 channels and very lightly stuffed with scraps. I donate them to a cat rescue group and they are given with each cat to a new adoption home. The shells of the pillows can be pieced with larger left overs, or recycled items like a pair of pants. I like upholstery/decorator fabrics because of their strength and durability, but will often make one side out of fleece for comfort.
The tiny bits are great for applique shapes- the pink would make wonderful little berries!!
I watched one of your older videos where you just reached 1000 subscribers. It’s so amazing that you now have over 50,000 subscribers. Way to go Kate!

I wish I could hop over for a chat and a cup of tea. The hexies behind you are a piece of art work. Gorgeous. The Liberty fabrics would make lovely curtains. I always enjoy Karen too.
Hello Kate ~ Your projects have kept you company this winter. I noticed Agnes's quilt on the wall. It is looking spectacular. I finally bound my gnome Christmas table runner. The days I would pick up my granddaughters from school I would sit in my vehicle and sew (or read). I found the natural lighting was better for my eyes. I took another sewing class and I am currently working on Cathedral Windows. It will be a decorative pillow for my younger granddaughter. I have decided that the smaller projects are more likely to get done. (eventually) I can do a bit when I feel more in the mood to sew and feel as if I am accomplishing something. I guess I feel as if the finale is near! Do have a good week. Stay safe and healthy.
Oh, yes! Looking forward to all the this-and-that you have in store for us 😍
Have to add I love how attentive the kitty is. It’s as if she’s biting everything you say... quite adorable ❤️
Love your Rabbiting great expression. Great Job you are doing. Winter is good for that. I miss your Chickens and Goose and what about a late Winter tour of your Gardens. 💜S
Thank you Kate, that was enjoyable. I too use leaders and enders and have a container full. Not sure what I’m going to do with them yet. See you on the LGS. Cheers from Melbourne.

If you do that you won't have to worry about it matching because of all the colors you have put into it 😉
If you are looking for ideas what to do with the strips, investigate Bonnie Hunter's website. She has lots of free patterns. 💖🌞🌵😷
Love the idea of scrap packs - it would be great to do a picture with them - lots of free machine stitching and adding yarn and sparkly threads then adding hand embroidery at the end - a landscape or a garden depending colours. I saw a very talented lady on Landscape artist of the year recently who did this.
Always such a wonderful treat to see Agnes' gorgeous quilt. I saw a video of a lady who sewed all the time and she took her little fiddly bits and in the early Spring she would lay small amounts of them outdoors. Bits of string and tiny fabrics. Her birds loved to scoop them up and add them in their nests. She thought it was such a wonderful thing she got to do for her birds. She said from time to time she has found nests that have blown from the trees and she gets to see little bits of well worn fabric tucked into the nests.
I was watching Emma (Jones?) doing EPP with tiny pieces of fabric. I suddenly noticed the material itself, and I said, "Hey, I know that fabric! It's Liberty fabric!" She uses a different kind of pattern paper that can be left in the EPP. Actually, it isn't paper at all, is it? Anyway, I thought the tiny pieces she used were a strain on the eyes, but how beautiful when sewed together to make a pin cushion. Jenny Doan does fun sewing, scrap sewing, every morning before doing the normal stuff for the day.

@@judepicton6252 Thank you for filling in the gaps of my not-so-stellar endorsement of Emma's channel. She is indeed an awesome lady, with an equally awesome channel. Her tiny work looks so intricate, and her explanations are very clear. Definitely a channel worth checking out.

@@kathyterrell1547 I only discovered Emma recently , and my goodness I've been on a journey. I have completely changed my ways ,when it comes to slowing up my work ,and certainly feel a lot better for it .Also I have decided to order the Hexiform and have a go .I tried miniature many years ago ,but the result was dismal. Wrong size needle/thread ect. Emma has shown me I can try again and I'm really excited ,to try again x
The VERY last crumbs of material can be put on the compost heap - then you'll get even more colourful sweet peas!

I would use those beautiful strips to make a quilt for your granddaughter. Of course you could make a quilted coat for her too!
I'm making a picnic blanket from my scraps--some are tiny, less than an inch, others are quite large fabric samples, but I just sew then together in clumps and the join them together and it has every colour I've ever used in it, christmas, children, velvet, linen anything and everything. I find it very relaxing as I don't have to worry about seams or matching etc. When I think it,s big enough I cut it into a 9 1/2 inch square, the join them! I've finished the front but have enjoyed the process so much I'm doing the same for the back! It may be finished some time this year!!
