Liberate Your Neck & Shoulders - Introductory Feldenkrais Lesson

This is the first class in the series of 8 Awareness Through Movement® lessons with Feldenkrais® Teacher, David Zemach-Bersin, designed to provide you with the tools you need to interrupt habit patterns involving unnecessary tension and contraction in your neck and shoulders.
We hope you enjoy this introductory lesson to the 8 lesson series, Liberate Your Neck & Shoulders. In the rest of this unique program you will learn innovative ways to reduce pain and anxiety, and improve your posture, breathing and well-being. Find out more and gain access: www.feldenkraisaccess.com/nec...
Good neuromuscular organization of our neck and shoulders is important to our physical and emotional well-being. The muscles of our neck and shoulders are intricately linked to our stress response, making us vulnerable to developing damaging habits of tension in our neck and shoulders. Over time, these habits tend to interfere with both our comfort and mobility. Without us noticing, the muscles attached to our neck and shoulders become chronically contracted, shortening and compressing our neck, and over time, leading to pain, constricted breathing, anxiety, jaw pain, back pain, and headaches.

    Thank you David for this amazing lesson. I have few questions pls. Are the hands resting on lower ribs what you would call a constraint ? Also can you give me an example of cancelling out gravity pls. Where are you located? Wondering if you offer any in person.

  • @FeldenkraisAccess

    @FeldenkraisAccess

    9 күн бұрын

    Dear Darlene, Thank you for writing, and my apologies for the delay. Yes, keeping the hands on the ribs is a constraint, although that is not how I would phrase it. Gravity is always present so we can't cancel it out, but by having our skeleton in a good alignment to gravity, cancels not gravity but the wear and tear that comes about by poor alignment. Feel free to email if you have a question in the future communications@feldenkraisaccess.com.

    Thank you so much for this lesson! I am new to this method, so still very much learning. I noticed that I found the raising of the elbow movement to really hurt my shoulders. I really couldn't find an easy way to execute that move so I stopped around 20 minutes in. Is there a practice you recommend one do before this one? I have a lot of neck and shoulder tightness so I am not surprised this was tough.

  • @FeldenkraisAccess

    @FeldenkraisAccess

    Thank you very much for writing. Raising the elbow away from the floor should be an extremely small movement. So small, that the moment you feel that the elbow loses contact with the floor, you just allow it to drop back to the floor. And always have a complete pause before lifting the elbow again. In this way, you should be able to avoid both fatigue and discomfort. Making the movement smaller and slower is always the primary way to improve a challenging movement. Please consider joining us for our upcoming class series The Secrets of a Healthy Neck, Feldenkrais Lessons taught specifically to address neck discomfort and promote ease and freedom in the neck and shoulders. www.feldenkraisaccess.com/secrets-healthy-neck

    Thank you so much for this exercise, I felt and all over ease in my body on standing up. For some months I have been conservatively trying to manage Bursitis i the left hip, along with some L5 /S1 whatever pressure as well as inflammation of bother sacrosanct iliac joints. Despite medical treatment of cortisone injections and physio exercises, my walking ability has decreased significantly. I have done several months of aquarobics which I seem to manage painlessly and able movement in the water. The freedom of hip walking movement is short lived back on dry ground. I look at your programs trying to decide but haven’t got a clue or don’t trust to choose the most beneficial one. Can you offer a suggestion please, I believe I need something for feet legs hip and back. Any night when I wake up I do the smooth and calm movement of hands on lower ribs, when I start yawning it’s time to go to sleep, other times my mind says this is not doing anything lets turn onto side. Wella! I go to sleep. So I am deriving some benefit , but my physical functioning is deteriorating and whilst it might be date of birth related, I am reluctant to sit back as an old lady and become couch potato. A suggestion of which course would be helpful please. Thankyou for making free lessons available for us to try.

Since you mention issues related to your hips, I suggest you try Intelligent Hips with Raz Ori - www.feldenkraisaccess.com/intelligent-hips. But please note, it is really important that you stay within the range of what is comfortable for you. You can stay with the first lesson for days or weeks until you feel ready to move on. And if you feel any discomfort, you can also do the movements in your imagination. I am so glad you are working with the Soothe & Calm lessons, and that they are helpful! Please feel free to write again.

    Sorry for the delay, Kate. Yes, by all means, it should be very appropriate for you. The main thing to keep in mind is not to do any movements which feel at all uncomfortable. If you encounter difficulties with the movements, make them smaller, even in your imagination, and I think you will find that they are still effective. Let us know if you have further questions!

    @@kateking3953Hi Kate! I can't say with certainty what the specific effects of any one lesson will be for a specific individual. However, the general effects of all Feldenkrais lessons are to generate a broader range of possible movements, as well as an improved feeling of wellness overall. Having made that qualifying statement, yes, this lesson has the potential to help you improve your range of movement in your neck and spine. But doing one lesson repeatedly is not always the answer. Engaging with a variety of movement patterns is part of how we learn and improve and find ways to move with whatever restrictions we may have. So I would encourage you to try the whole series! www.feldenkraisaccess.com/neck-shoulders

    hello and thank you for this lessons, I am watching them while waiting for the training to start in Australia next year, I wanted to ask, is it normal that irritation arises during Feldenkrais lessons? and that I feel a lot of tension at the base of my skull and over my skull? also, when asked if I sense the difference my perception isn't clear and I can't sense clearly. I also have parts of my skull that protrude like pointy balls that make laying down and doing head movements like the one here, sliding, very uncomfortable as it passes over those pointy bits. when seeing how I could reduce the effort, I don't make movement because any movement feels really awkward. I don't know if I am missing something, or if it is because of the protrusions on my skull that cause constant strain elsewhere? I hope someone can help gain a bit of clarity thank you!

    Dear @auroracasadei5914, I am really glad you asked these questions! Are you new to the Feldenkrais Method? It does certainly take time to develop kinesthetic awareness. I think you'll find that the more lessons you do, the easier it will be for the irritation to dissipate, the tension to release, and for the differences you feel to become more obvious. if your head feels sore and tender on the floor, please don't hesitate to add a bit of padding. Just thin enough to make you comfortable without tilting your head forward, or down. And please let me know if you have any other questions, or if you would like me to further clarify what I have written here.

    Hello Sir .. Loved it !!! Thanks a ton for sharing this !!! I have a doubt ... i tried it a couple of times and i get completely relaxed , lot of pain relief in my neck and shoulder blade regions, headache etc .. I have developed neck pain and some headaches due to that in past 2 to 3 weeks .. After one or 2 hours post taking this lesson i again start feeling the same kind of pain, stiffness and sometimes even more pain .. Why it that ... ? I had a check with a doctor and he says i dont have any major issues after my physical analysis for neck and shoulder region ... Can you suggest or guess what would be the problem ?

  • @FeldenkraisAccess

    Dear Ravikumar, It is hard to say why you are experiencing the pain without seeing you, or knowing more about you. However, if you are experiencing an increase in pain and discomfort after doing this lesson, I can suggest that the solution is almost always to do less, take more rests between each movement, and make each movement slower and smaller. Reducing the amount of effort invariably leads to an improvement in our ability to move more freely with less discomfort. Please keep us posted and write again if you don't feel better.
