Learning to Respond Not React - Tara Brach

Tara Brach - Learning to Respond Not React - 09/02/2015
When stressed, we often react with looping fear-thoughts, feelings and behaviors that cause harm to ourselves and/or others. This talk offers three interrelated strategies that can serve us when we’re triggered by stress, and help us find our way back to our natural wisdom, empathy and wholeness of being. By de-conditioning habitual reactivity, we are increasingly able to respond to our life circumstances in ways that serve healing and awakening.

As we all know, life can get tough, just know that it also gets better. Hang in there. You've made it this far. Through tough times. You are strong and brave. Wait for good things. Think good things. Keep away from negatives. Find a good group that understands the issues you've had to deal with. If it makes you feel better, stick with it, if not then find yourself a different type of support. Just get out to a safe place and take a walk. Breathe deeply. Feel how good the sun feels, how good it feels to breathe, appreciate the beauty of the day and life, of the simple things. Start there. Remind yourself of this. Take life back to a simple place, a place that's easy to handle. Stay in that place until you feel better. Find new friends. Friends that will love you, because you are a thoughtful person that deserves love. Open your heart to nice people, nice people that also have open hearts. All love and hugs to you. You are in my thoughts.

Scarlett, you ARE the perfect person to work on a suicide hotline to help talk down others from committing suicide. No matter how weak you feel mentally, there is someone much weaker than you that needs your help. In life everything happens for a reason. You have what it takes to help others even if you think you can't help yourself. Remember that is the only reason we are on Earth. We are here as part of a whole. As long as we remember that and not focus on ourselves individually, we will serve. By serving others, you will cure your sorrows. We love you Scarlett. It's time to help others now. So don't delay any longer. Call or Google to see how you can start your mission in your city. Forget the past and the future. Live for now only..... always. We are with you and so are loved ones you may have lost because they are using me to communicate this message to you.

This is beautiful. The story Tara read at the last thirteen minutes was in a chicken soup for the soul and I read it as a kid and I think it saved my life. I wasn’t popular and I was overweight and teen years are hard. As an adult, no longer being that kid, I’m reminded to be kind to others. We never know what they’re going through and how we could affect their day. This story always makes me cry. Never underestimate the power of your caring.

I’m less than 20 minutes into your talk and I want to comment. First, you are the answer to my asking source energy for assistance with my insecurities that have grown so strong over the past couple of years, but have also been with me for ever. I study psychology, spirituality, metaphysics, nap, you name it, and I work at a counseling center. I hear therapists say “they” and “people that,” etc., which makes me feel like “those people. I seriously began to think there was something really wrong with me. When you speak, you say “we,” which really lessens my feeling that I’m damaged. It’s more inpowering. And your message is simple and true. It’s a low period for me and you lift me up. Thank you! I may be back when I finish listening.

My heart was hurting when I found this video. I’m grateful for the teaching. I was believing my thoughts that I hurt my friend deliberately, rather than sharing a delight I have in words. My sharing triggered her and she accused me of DELIBERATELY hurting her. I took in her words and believed the thought that I was hurtful, not loving. My heart and stomach have been aching from that thought. This meditation brought me great relief. My thoughts were much like a child’s, believing that I wasn’t a good person. I got to hear them, to recognize that they are REAL, but NOT the truth. That “child-me” now knows that her love is REAL and she/I is safe and not “awful” or “wrong”. Blessings!

Thank you Tara, I found you through Psychology Today. I want to share this with the world! This talk was truly a life saver for me. I had a nightmare of a childhood and it's continued my whole life. Your talks and meditations were instrumental in helping me put the pieces together. I was misdiagnosed with depression all my life, in and out of psychosis, prescribed anti depressants, cocktails of prescriptions. obsessive behaviors that made me literally brush the enamel off my teeth. Drugs and Alcohol trying to self medicate. At 57 I was diagnosed with bipolar. I started DBT Therapy, even though I knew it was helping some I was still in a fog. I came to realize l couldn't pay attention and realized I had a learning disorder. I changed Dr.s again and it was determined that I've also been living with attention deficit, another new medication! Finally it all started to make sense.. I've come to accept that this was my path. I'm feeling like I'm awakening for the 1st time in my life at 58. I'm not hating myself anymore and I have found the love and light that was always there. I'm on the path with so much gratitude. I can't thank you enough .

I am currently in the process, after several long years of dark night of the soul, of learning how to dream and believe and manifest again. I keep beating myself and thinking myself hopeless and feeling in despair that my life will never change, whilst also knowing that manifestation comes from vibration and that miracles can change things in the blink of an eye. So how amusing, on yet another day when my autistic, ADD brain was rattling round in circles, to appreciate that I am manifesting exactly what I need to help move me forward, every single day. Thank you Tara, for creating this talk, with all its beautiful humour, so that it could show up in my feed in Divine Timing. This is not a new practice to me, but the way you present it reached parts that other teachers did not reach! Sending peace and love. "Start with the practice of waking up out of our thoughts. ...notice when we're in thoughts so that rather than living inside them, you're aware that they're happening. The point isn't to get rid of thoughts, but just know that they're there so you don't mistake them for reality. You have a choice. "Please, let me remember. I don't have to believe them".

This was a profound listen for me. I've been stuck for a year and a half, unable to perform any of what are all manageable tasks. Anxiety and depression over everything surrounding my mom's passing, the onslaught of a physically and emotionally painful mystery affliction that resulted in me isolating myself from all my friends and family, spending most nights in the bathtub alone with my thoughts that vacilated between suicide, questioning my sanity, and anger/playing the victim. Then came a person that even still, I have to fight making excuses for, but is clearly a narcissist. I'm grateful to finally have the strength and sensibility to cut this person out of my life and am also finally not give in to the myriad of thoughts this relationship has plagued me with. I don't have to believe this inner voice telling me I need answers. I'm happy to move from hurt to anger. I'm slowly efforting to develop healthier daily habits such as a daily gratitude practice, and after watching Andrew Huberman's lesson on effective gratitude practices, I realized I didn't have a story of gratitude to reference... Now I do. Thank you for this lesson, and thank you for sharing such a touching story. You're a wonderful speaker and human being.

So watch your thoughts with care and let them spring from love born out of respect for all beings. She put a huge amount of fear into me; she was mentally, emotionally and physically abusive every day, saying horrible things about me and inculcating me with fear. This was all secretive; she did not abuse me in front of others, including my father, who was away at work. So this secret abuse stayed with me most of my life. I was saved by being loved and appreciated by my father and everyone else around me, but I still have to fight insecurity and self-denigration. Meditation and discussions like this have changed everything. I love Tara’s guidance about self-acceptance and self-compassion. It puts me in a place of peace I needed so badly. ❤❤❤❤❤ I particularly love the message that the good thoughts accrue, so life can become better and better. PS Tara you’re a riot! I love your funny side.

Then I would put bits of it on over the next few years after, to help me ‘remember’. Now that your teachings are on KZread, I get to get so many more reminders. I loved your story about your high school best friend here. We’re both lucky you happened to pop into our lives at the right time. Thank you. I love you🙏💖🌟

This haunting diagnosis of BPD from my early 20's has been ruining my life since my earliest years and BPD seems to be more of a spiritual issue, and turning turning to this video in desperation to find how to respond and not react. I've been told I'm extremely reactive in the past and my current relationship of 4 years is suffering due to my instability, along with my job, my very few of what's left of my half friendships and family. A great and inspirational video. One of the stories she recounted is related to what happened to a friend. A long time ago he went through a lot of hardship, and sadly came to the point of deciding to give up on life. What stopped him was an expression of gratitude from a woman he sometimes chatted with on the Internet, who happened to tell him that day over chat that she always liked these special moments talking to him. That inspired him to find the courage to tell his parents about what he had been about to do. With their help he recovered and started a new life. He is now living happily. This always gives me the chills (like now) when I think of this. We really shouldn't underestimate the impact we can have on other people for good or bad with our words and actions, sometimes even the simplest ones...

By practicing & eventually incorporating these 3 concepts,"Don't believe your thoughts!", etc... I have freed myself from the imprisonment of my mind & its negative thought bias. Wow! My answer came so fast that I didn't have a chance to think it away. I am enough. I am connected to all there is. My wounds came from others telling me who I am and what I should do but never paying for the consequences listening to their advice brought me... But the lie was the core belief from childhood neglect abs abuse that I was small, unsafe and alone... And wrong and broken and stupid. In a flash this answer came in and I have always struggled with meditation, taking no thought and being still. I just didn't try this time and the universe caught a second of stillness..... I am enough. I am connected. This, the third in a row that I watched, was a beautiful experience for me.

The problem is many of us don't know how to love and we don't love ourselves because we don't feel loved. The truth is God loves us more than anyone else ever will and once we accept that we are on our way to being more loving.

true but from this logic the industry is "actual" virtual reality, something concrete, which means people will then in reality live in a "virtual reality" virtual reality or virtuality. I wonder how humanity will be affected when photo realistic VR exists and can be experienced through feelings by the general populace - maybe our capability for things like love and compassion changes when we experience events otherwise only available if one had actually seen them or through intuitive imagination such as lucid dreaming.
