Ram Dass: How to Be Responsive, Not Reactive - Ep. 246

In this classic talk from 1987, Ram Dass explores working with suffering, keeping our hearts open, finding the intuitive heart space, and being responsive rather than reactive. This episode is a continuation of the talk started in Here and Now Ep. 245 - Taking Off Our Spacesuit.

In this week’s episode:
Using his stepmother’s death as an example, Ram Dass explores how pain and suffering can become a curriculum through which one awakens.
Ram Dass discusses how he has begun to fall in love with everyone, and how his guru opened him up to the possibility of unconditional love. If we’re caught in our separateness, it’s hard to keep our hearts open.
Ram Dass shares classic stories of how other beings, including a dolphin, have helped him escape the trap of his own mind and find the intuitive heart space. He talks about taking care of his aging father and learning how to just be present with him.
Finally, Ram Dass explores the difference between being reactive and being responsive, reading a story from ‘How Can I Help?’ to illustrate his point. He talks about how, when we are quiet enough on the inside, we can begin to hear how to awaken through the journey of the spirit.
“As you quiet your mind just a little bit, you get so that you’re not automatically reacting to everything. You become what’s called responsive rather than reactive. In other words, something happens and there’s a moment when it’s just happening, you’re just with it. As your awareness expands to include more than your separate self, it’s as if you’re part of the gestalt of it all, and you experience the totality of it. And then, out of that quietness comes an act that is appropriate to that moment.” - Ram Dass

The wonderful teachings from Ram Dass will endure throughout time. He's a joy-seeker, a sage and just your garden variety soul being in a human spacesuit. I'm so grateful that I discovered him during my formative years. (70's-90's) He's the most gentle sage that lifts the world to this day! I hope the younger GENS find him and love him. May all that are reading this be joyous, loved and free. ❤💫✌

I wanna be free. We have to free ourselves though. Whether the teacher will remain behind the scenes or manifest as a person, the guru is always within. Joy isn't my goal. Freedom is. But the paradox is that freedom brings joy, so. But not the kind of fleeting joy that's conditional. It's probably more like a profound acceptance of ourselves as we are, and the world as it is.

I can’t explain, how much these teachings have helped me help myself. Forever grateful. I ruined the relationship with the woman I loved most because I didn’t know the things I know now, when I was a younger man. Even though I miss her so, I’ve learned to still live a good life without her. And I’m a better person now everyday, then I ever was then 🙏

Unfolded rather well🙂⚡️ Teaching these skills, is so beneficial to not lower, your most authentic self. Too bad, our government leaders, and those we look up to don’t come from this place. But we’re just as responsible for putting our hopes and failures on them. So many of us sit around and complain, but never do anything to set the example. Regressing, becoming rigid and angry. Free yourself and believe what is best for you will happen if you go with the flow .

Hi with LOVE to all of you who are out there and see this. I found Ram months ago by chance while listening to Trevor Hall music and coincidentally heard Ram speaking about sitting around the fire for eternity...that's another story. What I'm here for now is to admit that for 60 years I have deeply identified with loving WHOLY, (HOLY?..) EVERYTHING I know.. from a tree to a stranger...I feel that love for all, but yet I myself feel worthless, undeserving of love and unlovable. I am humbled to the point of tears by even the slightest kindness and weep daily at my yearning to simply be loved. I feel I have so much love to give away but none for me to give myself or any comfort in living so lonely. I'm 4 in a 60yo body just counting the days to disappear. I have endured loss and abuse and trauma. Neglect, injustices, failure, and broken-hearted pain. I have raised children to become good and kind, lived a creative life of small successes... yet I am nothing. What am I? Enlightened doomed or merely human? I'm very tired. I just want to be held by something who genuinely loves my being. I'm a good person, I think. I try. I am kind and gentle...and always there for those in need of any non-judgemental considerate love. How can I feel so empty and lonely still.? Is this a common place to be? Others out there like this? Help. 🙏

We could "break down our ego" in the same way we broke down our tooth fairy and our Santa Clause. Considering they all share the category of fantasies once believed in. They have no existence apart from assuming them to be real. We are told that the childish ideas can be dropped as we mature, but they never drop the ego fantasy. I won't wait for others to tell me.

Pushing down others as leverage to elevate yourself is a perfect example, illustrating an inflated ego disproportionate to your self esteem. 'That Freedom Guy' is fiction. It's all fiction. The ego. The absence thereof...fiction. Fiction is story telling. Story telling. It's what we humans do....but what do I know? Maybe you are right and everyone else is wrong....I would be interested in learning about it but in the meantime, why don't you create content elevating others which resonates?

love is the only thing worth breathing for…sounds like you know the path even tho you are heartbroken…we can have broken hearts yet love fiercely & purely…confusion comes when you are separate from love…❤❤❤

This is very helpful, as he explains something allot of us are familiar with and struggling with to implement, to , well try to become out of the fallen state, and this geezer, explains it in an whole different lighthearted humorist way. This other perspective is illuminating, and opens doors, and explains concepts familiar with but not fully understood. He is a Gem. I resided in the state he described for 2 weeks, it was broken by a guy who recognized my state and seemed to notice me praying to Yeshuah internally, he ran towards me with a ferocious hate foaming at the mouth shouting profanities about Christ and God, though I bicycled hard enough felt back into the fear state. And gone was the perception of the divine presence in every person. I am deeply thankful for this 2 weeks, I know now, I don't believe. Ofcourse I recognize their are other Christ's and that it's not in the labeling or the images, but about the frequency, the state wich I call the Christ consciousness, because he pointed toawards this state, and teached how to reach it, the teaching is mostly outside of the bible though, for obvious reason of the ego driven institutionalized gatekeeping Church, who ignore his essence, wich is a travesty.

I'll say this! Every thing, you ever wondered about, questioned, doubted, falsely were made to be-lie-ve, etc., since you were even born, will be revealed to you, from within your own precious h-eart, mind and soul. Be still and KNOW you are the temple of the One who's true and set apart name, will also be revealed to you. You are very much, also set apart. Which they have wrongly translated, from the original Hebrew, to "saint"!

The Messiah was in-deed anointed, which is what CHRIST means. Where Cisco comes from. Anyway, truth is obviously weirder than fiction and for most, hard to swallow.

Hey there. I can’t find any info about your Asheville based community. I’ve been living in AVL for 5 years and I very much still in need of this type of community here. Could you share more about the meet ups?

So many teachings like this one from what has been called candy coated spirituality. Try being jewish in Poland after the German invasion and the terrible months of suffering that existed as reality before ultimate death. Talk about the terrible grace of God. And yet Victor Frankel wrote about witnessing it. Im just so grateful to be born baby boomer USA post that horror and hippie turned on by the likes of Ram Das who danced into our lives and teaches us still. Life and death in these times can surely be beautiful.
