One very important detail on ball handling. Back then you couldn't carry the ball over. So the players from back then would be better ball handlers if they played today and the players today would not be as good ball handlers if they played back then. If you watch todays game almost every dribble is a carry over. The players back then didn't have the advantage of the euro step/traveling.

Don't think the euro step is traveling. It's just basically 1 foot jumping side to side for two steps. Reason why it wasn't utilized in Jordan's era, my guess because of spacing. The floor is so spaced out in this Era they have enough room to side step defenders in the lane. That would be impossible in the 90s, you would get your soul snatched doing that.

Michael is the prototype for basketball athleticism. When you give praise for longevity, I think of Kareem. He went through more adversity. Players traveled coach on planes, teams actually practiced on off game nights, greater physicality during the game, and players wanted to be known as Iron men, who played through injuries. There was a greater focus on being in game shape. The game was tougher and the athletes were in shape to play deep into the season. Players today may party often on the off nights and are given rest between games, which means they are not in top shape. Jordan has all of the advantages like Kareem and the intellect, speed, quickness and hands to take advantage of all of his athleticism.

So technically he really only played 11.5 seasons with the bulls and 2 seasons with the wizzards, 13.5 in total. Lebron playing his 21st season. His numbers compared with Jordan in that context aren't as impressive in the whole picture. His longevity is impressive though, but he's always been a freak athlete built like a brick house, so it's easy to see why.

  • @wpriddy

    @wpriddy

    7 ай бұрын

The game is measurably softer. They don't foul out because they never touch each other. Now, going straight up with a shooter is a player spacing foul. Now, touching a ball handler at any time is a foul. Now, normal fouls are flagrant. Now, being in perfect defensive position when the ball handler changes direction into you is a foul. It's like this: if the second threepeat bulls played the durant warriors, the rule set would determine the outcome. 90s rules: Bulls absolutely destroy. Win by 30 or 40. The physicality of the game is too much. Curry has 6'6" Ron harper literally living inside his ass. Klay is wearing a full on wizard robe named Michael jordan. Durant is being guarded by scottie fucking pippen. A dude in the hall of fame for being one of the greatest defenders in nba history. If durants height is too much, then there's still a whole ass dennis rodman. Another guy in the hall of fame for being one of the greatest defenders in nba history. Today's rules: Bulls foul out in the first quarter

Yo, facts on that. If LBJ played in the west and made it to the finals, he aint losing. He would have less rings and less appearances, but i very much doubt he would have a finals losing record. The fact thst he lost to Dallas with the most stacked roster he ever had, says alot. Making a finals in the 2000s as a superstar without a jumpshot, says alot about the east back then. Also says alot about the dominance of 1 Kobe Bryant and 2 Tim Duncan.

I agree with you on the idea that they care about being embarrassed on defense too much. If I have to hear one more fan or player say “He made a business decision” one more time……You see the videos of Jordan dunking right on Zo or KJ on Olajuwon. There is tape of Zo and Olajuwon blocking MJ and KJ. They were actually trying to challenge and keep these guys from scoring. When did effort become such a bad thing if it fails?? LeBron didn’t compete in a dunk contest like Dr. J, Kobe or MJ….not because he would have lost but because he COULD have lost. He was more worried about embarrassment than he wanted the challenge. MJ has the worst three point contest showing in history but he wanted to try it because he already took two dunk titles. So he stood out on that court on All-Star Weekend and bombed. He was willing to.

The 3 second defensive violation added in 2001 also made a huge difference. It prevented big men from camping out in the lane, Just waiting for people to try and drive to the Basket. That did 2 things... the Current Big Man are gonna have less blocks because they can't stand in the paint defending the basket waiting for on someone driving to the basket. On the other hand it made it easier for everyone else's to score because the lane is always wide open for an easy dunk or lay up!

I would agree with y’all about ball handling if we didn’t have a stat called TURNOVERS. Yall literally judging ball handling off of moves 😂. The NBA hides turnovers because Lebron is the King of them and it exposes all the bs about today’s NBA🤦🏾‍♂️. Another reason the NBA is 💀.

As an Oldhead myself, and HUGE fan of MJ, Bird, Magic, Ewing, etc, Today's game seems like an offshoot of the original. 80s BBall was all-out war! not specifically about aggression, but the mindset. and you also had great shooters as you do today, but you had position-centered BBall. you go up against a real shotblocker back then, and they had extreme experience in that, and he took it personal if you got though him. These days its Curry BBall (no diss to Curry, he deserves to be ONE OF the goats more than Lebron I think.) but you have 7footers constantly going to the 3 pt shot, that seems out of place.

Guys. Jordan has 7 of the top 10 playoff series scoring AVERAGES of all time... he averaged 40+ in 5 playoff series, including once in the finals. That's insane. Lebron, Kobe and Wilt don't even appear on the list once. That's how dominant he was - all hyper efficient series, by the way. This includes the only back-to-back 50 point playoff games against the Cavs, including the series clinching famous shot over Craig Ehlo... if he missed that shot, the Bulls lose. Legendary.

The difference in defense from 80's and 90's compared to now is in the 80's and 90's defenders were territorial. It was an insult to allow someone to score on you. You wanted to destroy your opponent and to do that you had to stop them from scoring. Nowadays, the mind set is just out score the opponent. There were also a LOT more players who took pride in their defense more than their ability to score. Players played roles. Nowadays, some NBA teams have a full roster of the same player. Everyone just shoots. To be honest, I'm not sure how the coaches of NBA teams handle coaching. I would be floored most days by the amount of laziness. I'd end up cutting everyone because I'm enjoyed old school basketball. Too many people taking off plays and stopping to complain to a referee while the ball is still in play. I don't know a single person, personally, who still watches the NBA.

As someone who played basketball and trains and scouts current players, it's a fallacy that current players practice shooting more. What has changed is what is considered a good shot and what is considered a bad shot. I promise you dudes were pulling like Steph Curry in pickup games, but that wasn't tolerated on a team. Analytics changed the perception of good shots. They found that you can get more points per possession if you took more 3s than 2s.

There's also that stupid 3 second rule where the big man can't just guard the basket and prevent layups and dunks. Nowadays they are in the 3 point zone and throwing up 10 shots a night. A 3 point shooting center was unheard of back in the day. Your primary job was to block easy shot like dunk and layups. Today, everybody just moves out of the way and gives players a clear lane.

I'm a subscriber to BTM. We're roughly the same age. I saw this video quite a while ago. As an older guy, I saw MJ play when I was a kid, same way you saw LeBron! Jordan did shit no one else could do or had done! On too of that he was clutch like all the greats before him. He didn't pass the final shot...he took it and made it! Since college! LeBron will always be like Kobe in the fact that he entered the league at 18. Jordan went to college and the Olympics before entering the NBA. LeBron is an all time great, but I would choose Bird in that position as my starting #3, I want to put LeBron in as a #4 but in the 80's and 90's IDK if he could actually play down low like that! His mind set would have to be different that's for sure.

Back in those days that defense worked because as you stated in the beginning of your statement players didn't shoot as well from range so that cluttered everything within the 3 line both offense and defense now if you run down on defense to get set up and you're not above the 3 line then you will get rained on with 3s

100% true. That’s why he has never participated in a slam dunk contest because he is scared to fail and this will bring a bad image to his name. Kobe wasn’t scare of this, MJ wasn’t afraid to fail. Lebron passes because he’s afraid to fail.

I agree on a lot in this but half the reason they not blocking shots as much is more because its a lot of shooting bigs now and it was almost no shooting bigs back then so bigs can help easier and more often because they didnt have to worry about giving up a 3 for helping on drives in the paint and also ball handlers are more skilled shooters so they pull up more than drive now or throw up a floater

  • @mertonhirsch4734

Lebron's argument is that no one since he's entered the league or likely in the future will approach what he has done, especially considering that he averaged 78 games and 40 minutes a game for his first 8 years, and played 282 post season games including 4 rounds of post season 9 straight years. You can only find someone who looks more dominant by going back in time: Jordan, Kareem, Wilt. If no one who's entered the league since you is better, you have a "case". He may be as good as a player can possibly be right now. The big men today, Jokic, Embiid and Giannis have great efficiency but play 33 minutes. Embiid has never played 70 games in a season. Giannis hasn't played over 33 minutes a game or more than 67 games for the last 4 years. If you have to go back in time to find anyone who approaches your career dominance then you are in the conversation. If a player who's playing now clearly exceeds Lebron's accomplishments then you can knock him out of the discussion.

Overall, the game is smarter today. Less physical, but smarter. Less players getting hurt, less fouling out. Fouls are called more today as well. It’s just smarter to reduce the contact and not give up wasteful fouls. However, Jordan would still dominate today. He is the best ever. The complete player!
