People need to understand use the “original” 531 is not the most optimal program for strength, but wendler himself has adapted his own program. First, in 531 he offers the option of the fresher percentages 65/75/85, 70/80/90, and 75/85/95. Or the heavier percentages 75/80/85, 80/85/90, 75/85/95. Clearly the heavier percentages would be better for strength. In 531 powerlifting he introduces the idea of incorporating singles at 90-100% of your training max. He also gives you a peaking plan for a meet. He also gives ideas on how to use the program as an equipped powerlifter. In beyond 531 he adds additional volume via joker sets and 1st set last. With joker sets they allow you to go as heavy as you want for that day. This does 2 things allows for auto regulation and allows you to handle heavy weights. With 1st set last this adds high volume to a lift. You can do 1 all out set or split it up. 5x5, 3x8, 4x6, ect. He also gives the ideas of doing 2 cycles before deoloading. And he adds a bunch of bbb options most notably the 5x5 @80%, 5x2@90% and 5x1@100% which allows you to add volume at heavier weights even further. With these additions 531 is s great program for strength. He’ll jim achieved a 710 lb raw deadlift with 531. Not to mention if your doing zero Assisstance work of course your lifts aren’t going to go anywhere. Educate yourself about the adaptations and the program before you bash it. If your referencing the program as it pertains in the original book, your knowledge of 531 is outdated.

I agree completely. 5/3/1 is a good structure to progressively overload you lifts every 3 weeks, its the assistance that goes with it that drives the frequency, intensity and volume.

Alan, obviously you cannot diagnose the problem without seeing the movement but I've had a problem with my bench for seemingly the past two years. I've had training partners point out to me that I seem to have uneven bar position that begins on the descent. What I mean by that is that it seems like the bar is crooked though the path stays straight. I've reviewed my set up and feel that my hips are set properly and my back stays tight, lats as pinched together as I can get them. Have you seen similar problems in any of your clients and if so what did you have them do about it? Thanks for the content as always! I've had a lot of new people approach me in the gym for advice getting started and without hesitation I encourage them to look you up and they always have nothing but good things to say about your content. So thankful for reasonable voices like yours in the YT fitness community.

The question about the odd lifts... most of the programs that I've seen that incorporate them, are set up in a way where the odd lifts are meant to help build up one of the big 4 (being squat, deadlift, bench, OHP) and act as a variation. They are not a replacement. An example of how this can be used is in the program Naturally Enhanced. The way the program is set up is in a very heavy day (total reps being around 24) and a volume day (total reps being as high as you wish). Both days are full body and you lift 2 days a week (in addition to two other days a week where you incorporate connective tissue work to stay injury free and prevent things such as tendinitis). You can set the program up into four week blocks and the program is meant to make you strong in every part of the range of motion of each of the big lifts. If you are trying to build up your deadlift, for example, on week 1 you would do a 1RM or a 3RM, on week 2 you could do block pulls (basically an elevated deadlift), on week 3 you could do banded deadlifts, and on week 4 you could do deficit deadlifts. You then restart the 4 week cycle and max out your standard competition deadlift again on the first week, you asses where you are slow on the deadlift, and spend three weeks trying to build that sticking point up with a deadlift variation or odd lifts (block pulls, Jefferson deadlift, deficit deadlift, rack pulls above the knee, etc). This cycle continues as your deadlift should be going up. This methodology of a 4 week block with a variation of the lift, happens for each of the big 4 and the point of the variation or odd lift, is again, to build up the weak points of the lift. Note: Naturally Enhanced is not a power-lifting specific program, but does claim to make you stronger in your main lifts, if you program it correctly. Naturally Enhanced is specific to your goals and you program it within specific parameters to achieve the goals you are trying to achieve. I used Naturally Enhanced as an example because it is one of the most notable programs in KZread Fitness that incorporates odd lifts and it may help someone understand how odd lifts are used to aid the big 4.

the purpose of so much variation on westside from my understanding is recovery. they all compete equipped, equipped lifting is brutal on your recovery. you're talking about putting 150% of your raw max on your spine, the idea with the accessory movements is to be the hardest variation possible so that you are moving the least amount of weight

if interested in 5/3/1, read the new books/programming. Probaly when he did it years ago it was just the basic program, but since then hes increased volume by adding things such as joker sets. I've gained roughly 80 lbs on all my lifts (more on my lower body lifts), but then again I changed the program slightly to cater to my needs. I still use the percentages tho.

Alan, is that logo on your shirt trademarked? I ask because I have started to like the orange and black scheme and starting to make my home gym with it. I am also a Marshawn lunch/seahawks fan so I’m really liking the “beast mode” theme. So it begs the question, if in the future I decide to make a KZread video, do I need to ask permission from the trademark owner to use such a theme in a post? Thank you for your time.

Alan I have a feeling the hook grip you are talking about is better in the long run where both palms face the rear. I see allot of people who tear their biceps and can see your style is safer in the long run. I firmly feel doing barbell rows with a curl grip is a terrible idea in the long run. You may get a little more ROM but I think your bicep tendons will take a terrible beating with this style.

Alan have used 5 3 1 program and comments it without knowing it's basics. The original 5 3 1 is made for intermediate lifters and he is advanced, so it's rather normal the program to be ineffective for him. About the lack of volume - it's a very adjustable program that gives the option to add as much additional volume as you can handle. I don't like much volume so 2-3 accessories per workout seem enough for me. And about the singles - you can make singles from time to time using the joker sets. So it's a rather flexible program, you just have to know how to use it.

I think people were upset about 5/3/1 as you didn't discuss the various adaptations of the of the program, for example doing assistance on opposite days, joker sets, 5/3/1 pyrmaid, 3/5/1 for powerlifting, boring but big etc. Some of these or a combination of these fix the low intensity, low volume and low frequency issue of base 5/3/1.

Everyone knows that Alan is being intellectually dishonest about 5/3/1 to further push his own methodology. I'm not a fan of 5/3/1 either, but his criticisms are completely misplaced and he is either being deceptive or has never read Jim's books. 5/3/1 simply defines three sets per week per exercise (two of which are very submaximal), which is a small percentage of total training volume. Making any generalizations about all 5/3/1 programs is basically impossible since there are so many variations.

I think it['s more of Jordan's and BBM influence. Jordan wrote his article that shit on 531 and Texas Method ( even though he endorsed TM in his own article " 12 ways to skin the TM") . You are correct that there are too many variables to run 531 to trash it altogether. His whole argument is against stock 531 and TM without awknowleging the endless ways to program both.

Yeah but you can’t take a shit program, change it completely to make it ok and then say it’s not shit. If you change it so much it’s not TM or 5/3/1 anymore
