    Thank you for this video! I am obese. I'm 37 years old, 6'2" and, currently, 315 pounds. At the start of 2018, though, I was 375 pounds. I was inspired to start strength training after watching the worlds strongest man last Christmas (It airs in December here in the UK), so I started going to my local gym. At the start I could barely bench press an empty bar and my deadlift was 60kg. Over the first few months, my PR's increased but I wasn't really losing any weight. Around June time I started swimming, twice a week. A mile each session. Now I'm losing around 2-4lb a week and I'm still getting stronger. My bench is at 70kg and I've just deadlift 180kg. You are absolutely right! Adding some cardio and losing weight do not have a detrimental effect on strength. At least not at relatively low weights.

    A few additions to this: Holding breath is good for if you're doing high weight, low rep. Squatting and dead lifting barefoot is purely preference. Generally, you need to find what footing suits you. Inclined, declined or flat. And by decline,we're talking as much or as little as a few degrees. Another tip, which was vaguely covered, but will put it here: No one cares what you're lifting weight wise, they will only care about form. Seriously, people who are maxing out their bench at 65lbs or what ever, no one cares. Just lift it properly. I've had MANY clients when I've been in the gym rack up stupid weights they can't lift, and then cause themselves injury, despite that NOT being what I taught them. I even make a rule of novice or first time lifters do not exceed the bar on their first session so they can get form down to a perfect T.

    the thing about the valsalva is that it's a very natural thing to do that most people would do automatically except it gets beaten out of them when they first start training by the typical gym bro who doesn't know what he's talking about

    If I'm understanding correctly, you should be breathing on every rep, you should just have your breath held for the entirety of the rep rather than "inhale on eccentric, exhale on concentric."

  • @Bullitt1768

    @Bullitt1768

    5 жыл бұрын

    An average gym goer is most likely not going to know how to properly Valsalva, even tho it may seem natural. Most people tend to actually suck their gut in on big compound movements, that's why a belt is good cus it gives feedback for your core.

  • @leonestello8519

    @leonestello8519

    5 жыл бұрын

    It's all about what you're doing... if your doing max weight 1-5 reps then Valsalva. If you're repping out 6 or more then doing that will limit your longevity and you'll probably pass out. It also is important to consider the exercise too. You Valsalva on squats, dead lifts and benches but not curls, rows, shrugs, pull-ups... (the list goes on and on). Use your brain and remember it's not always about repping max weight. Volume is volume and low weight high reps are just as important and will even get you over those dreaded plateaus so don't be afraid to lift lighter. You will make better gains

  • @thebarbelllifestyle1478

    @thebarbelllifestyle1478

    5 жыл бұрын

    The valsalva is kind of like leg drive on the bench press. Like how some beginners kick or lift their butts off the bench (which is the body's instinctive reflex to use leg drive), likewise, new lifters hold their breaths when training (but usually dont brace their core at first) but are always told by the average gym trainers that they're doing it wrong. I think the reason why they're holding their breaths is *because* it's the body's way of naturally trying to generate and maintain the most amount of tension and stability as possible. It doesn't make sense to recondition them to deflate and weaken and destabilize their core.... so dumb.

  • @leonestello8519

    @leonestello8519

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@thebarbelllifestyle1478 it is also natural reflex to hold your breath and brace when throwing a punch but anyone who knows anything about martial arts knows that holding your breath is dumb, even if you fully engage your core. It would be nice if one day people could be smart enough to not think so ONE DIMENSIONALLY when it came to applying concepts to reality. Have you tried the Valsalva while rapid firing a dozen deadlifts or squats? NOT SAYING ONE SHOULD TRAIN LIKE THAT EVERY TIME but variety is the key to muscle confusion and athletic development. If you're doing squats @90% max then YES Valsalva... If you're doing squats @ 50% with INTENSITY and EXPLOSION for 20 reps then just you try to Valsalva and you will find yourself passed out. IT'S ALL ABOUT "A TIME AND A PLACE". Training is far more then lifting maxes all the time. Conditioning type exercises require more "functional" breathing to have the stamina to endure. Try not to think so one dimensionally

    One important thing is to rest properly between reps and have something to eat and drink. I literally passed out today after 1 hour hard training at the gym because my blood sugar went too down. Thankfully nothing bad happen and i was helped, after eating and drinking in 15 minutes i was on pristine condition. So this thing is important for novices like me at least after today i think this is the case.

    You mean between sets? Don't eat during lifting. That's bad advice. Eat something 30 minutes before lifting. If you can't do that, then eat more meals throughout the day. If you don't have time to eat before lifting, you need to eat more snacks between breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

    Eating during your lifting session isn't a good idea. Eat well 2 hours before you lift. 3 hours if it's a meal higher in fat. You do not want an active digestion during your workout. Your digestive system needs blood to fuction. This blood should be in your muscles. If you decide to train for hours on end and have (half) a banana during a break, that's fine. Passing out after 1 hour of training, if not by breathing, means you should have eaten a better mix nutrient dense foods before. Mineral rich foods with some complex carbs. Make sure you had your magnesium, your iron is in check and you are properly hydrated. A body takes up to 5 hours to fully hydrate. Last but not least: You won't actually be able to eat so close before lifting once you start lifting heavy weights. Bracing will make you want to puke.

    I was squatting in some bulky running shoes for my first couple of months and my hips kept getting sore, to the point where I wasn't increasing weight because I didn't want to get injured. One day I was talking to a friend about this and they suggested wearing flat shoes. Tried it out and it completely got rid of my hip issues. Strange to hear someone recommend a shoe with a heel as my problem was the opposite. Goes to show that everyone is different. As for conditioning, I think this could have been stressed even more. Getting stronger is good for your health, but cardio fitness it the most important thing for your long term health.

  • @DJstagen

    @DJstagen

    2 жыл бұрын

    Your issue probably wasn't the heel, it's that running shoes aren't firm. They're made to absorb impact so they compress under the weight which can lead to your balance shifting around. Weightlifting shoes are completely solid, some even have soles made from wood to really minimize compression and give you a solid base to push into the ground.

    The eating habits part is really important and I'm glad you're talking about it. I'm just about wrapping up my Novice LP and I got fairly strong for a novice (350 squat for 5, 255 bench for 5 and 405 deadlift double). Problem is I'm now sitting at 245 lb, 30% BF and feel very unhealthy. Just read To Be a Beast by Dr. Feigenbaum. Time to get Lean! Thanks for the great content, Alan!

    I didn't get quite as strong as you on LP, but I wasted a lot of time trying to "milk it" by just eating more. Gaining weight only worked for me to a certain degree (I got up to 220, but nothing past 195 lb bodyweight helped). I'm on my way back down to 195 lb now. It's annoying because I spent 2016 losing 75 lb only to gain it all back from SS. I wish Starting Strength would stop preaching to gain as much weight as possible as fast as possible to keep LP alive. I don't understand the point of staying on LP as long as possible; in the long run it doesn't really matter. I'd rather make slightly slower progress and not be a fat ass. Good job on your lifts though.

    +Riflemanm16a2 Yes but it is impossible to make linear progress on a lean bulk. Calories required to add 10-15lbs to your squat per week is not the same as the calories needed to lean bulk. Linear progression usually requires 1000 kcal surplus, in that range for most people. Rippetoe has stated this himself aswell. Lean bulking works, but there is no way you can be eating in a 300-500 kcal surplus only to add 5lbs to your squat per session. Doesn't work that way. People lean bulking will have to cut down the progression rate to something like 15-20lbs to their squat per month if they are novices squatting in the 200s trying to get to a squat in the 300s.
