I'm glad you guys are enjoying the skits that have been appearing in these videos. It's been a while since a classic Lawful Stupid Paladin appeared in the tavern, it's good to be back. Now that this is done, I'm going to get back to that 1 hour Annie Edison compilation. See ya next time!
RPG Horror Stories is a series where I read through stories from the subreddit r/rpghorrorstories and give advice on how to avoid the issues that lead to such stories in the first place.

Intro story: Of course your character would know how far their weapon can shoot. Looking up the rules isn’t metagaming. First story: Big oof moment. Glad everyone’s still friends! Second story: Obviously, the paladin was being an idiot, but if I were the DM, I would have had the dragon only attack the paladin, since he was the only one attacking the dragon, and the rest of the party was trying to stop him. The paladin’s player can learn a lesson about rash decisions by losing his own character. Punishing other players for one character’s stupidity is just nasty. I’m glad the party solved the issue by talking to each other like adults and owning up to their own mistakes. Third story: NTA. Everyone in the party agreed that this guy needed to go, and had separate conversations about it. The outside “friends” are just dogpiling OP because they want someone to blame. Fourth story: Yeah, if I was the DM, I would have kicked Richard as soon as he started trying to write OP’s character for her. What a creep.

The Paladin story reminds me of two things I try to put into games I'm in or running. As a DM, if a PC acts recklessly, they're the one who learns the less at the risk of death without killing the rest of the party. As a player, if someone else decides to acts against the party's decision and attacks anyway, they're fighting on their own and will not receive assistance from my character. I will also not act against the party's wishes myself.

Hey! I’m the dm of the first (or maybe second?) story, the one with the bush berry bandits. Just thought I would add a bit on to what the person had to say in the horror story. For a little more context from my perspective the party had been doing pretty well in most encounters which led to me constantly trying to make things more difficult to match the soulsborne theme. It was a little bit before the story took place where I might’ve taken things too far and pushed into being unfair rather than hard. Keep in mind this was about a year or two ago now and was the second campaign I had ever dmed. I was very new to how things work and didn’t know a lot of the rules which led to it ultimately being a bad campaign. What wasn’t mentioned was that after that session nobody the group pretty much disbanded. We still talked but nobody wanted to play anymore which did hurt a lot at the time. Fast forward to now and while I don’t talk to the original group too much anymore they’ve gone on to make several campaigns with one of the players as the dm. I myself also went on to make two more campaigns as a dm myself one of them being a far improved version of the souls borne campaign in the horror story. In the end I just want to say I take full responsibility for being a bad dm at that time. For anyone else who might be in the same place of seeing yourself as a poor dm just remember to learn from your mistakes. I almost gave up dming right there but instead i talked with the players and thought about things to improve and now we’ve split into two groups each happily playing about 2-3 campaigns.

Death by Dumb-Story: In fact, you wouldn't even have to retcon the story to make up for the Paladin's mistake. "Raise Dead (5th degree spell) actually has the disadvantage that it doesn't work if you've been maimed. ...but "Resurrection" (7th degree spell) does not have this limitation. As my DM always says, "If it creates plot, it's good - so get some more drawbacks and problems for your characters." That the party cleric can't cast this spell is possible, but that doesn't mean that no NPC knows the spell and is willing to cast it for the party in return for a quest to be completed afterwards, so that they can get their tattered necromancer back. This creates plot, corrects the dead character thing and makes it clear that mistakes have consequences - in this case a rightly very angry mage and a lot of legwork and danger with no reward other than XP because any treasure is part of the payment to the church that provided the Resurrection Spell.

Regarding the intro story about knowing how far your bow can shoot- Considering that the question is meta gaming or something the character would know, as an archer, I can roughly gauge distances and also know how far I can shoot before my arrows drop off and I likely won't hit my target anymore, up to 60m for normal IFAA paper target. A ranger should be able to look at a dragon and go "hold on I need to get a bit closer" or "yeah nah I can hit that"

  • @finnmchugh99
    @finnmchugh99 Жыл бұрын

As someone who has small experience with a bow in a camp archery range... and had a makeshift range in the backyard before all the arrows broke, with experience an archer can gauge how far an arrow can travel. Its like a soldier with a shotgun knows how long it can travel or is outright told how far a shotgun can go.

Right, definitely not metgaming to doublecheck knowledge your character would have.. Like I forget what spells do on my sorc because it isn't life or death for me, but it is for him so he'll remember, that's why I write the details down on the sheet so i can check what he knows about them. Same deal with the bow.

In the Paladin vs Dragon story, I put more blame on the DM. You don't punish other people for someone else's bad decisions. Not to mention the decision to just kill a character with nothing the player can do about it is crappy. And killing the character in a way that can't be Revivified was a decision the DM made. He *chose* to do that. It was crappy. OP had every right to be pissed. Once upon a time, I also had a paladin character attempt to solo a dragon. There were not any other people with me at the time. I saw a red dragon attacking someone, in the distance. The DM had intended me to get there too late, when the dragon had already fled, and gather a party to fight it later. He forgot that I had a really nice potion that made me immune to fire damage, and a potion of fly, that let me get close enough to shoot arrows at the dragon. I couldn't NOT try to save the person from it. A round or so later, my paladin was at 2 hit points, in the dragon's mouth, having damaged it enough that it was falling from the sky with my nearly dead paladin clutched in its teeth. There are two morals of this story. 1. Never underestimate a determined PC's ability to get themselves into really big trouble. 2. It's great to be immune to a dragon's breath weapon, but those teeth and claws turn out not to be mere decoration. Learn from my mistakes, folks! :)

For some people the boundary between character and player does not exist. This also extends to video games, to the extent that some male players just can't get over a game having a female protagonist (and I assume that there's a small group of females who have the same reaction to male protagonists). To me it seems like most people do understand that boundary and are able to distance themselves from their character and the other players from their characters. It's just that we encounter more people who don't when we read these horror stories (it's why they're horror stories in the first place).

In 3.5 I had a concept for a character that required him to solo a juvenile red dragon (or older) by level 6. The 7th level of the character was a prestige class that required the solo kill of a red dragon in honorable combat. No tricks. No ambushes. No help. A CR11 encounter vs. a level 6 fighter with some fancy abilities, a lance of frost, and a cloak of fire resistance. So, I wish I could say it was a magnificent battle, something cinematic for the ages. But, no. The fighter leaped from the cliff edge, performing a leaping charge with a lance for massive damage, using cold damage against a creature weak to cold, and a character build up to that point specifically designed for hunting red dragons. The dragon died in the first round. The fighter fell to the ground and survived the fall at 7 hp. The rest of the table was pretty shocked at the damage output by a character that was pretty average on damage up to that point. The DM was well aware for a while the design for the character hinged on an all-or-nothing attack just to qualify for a gimmick requirement. Either the fighter got enough damage or was dead. The character went on to be picked up by the party, and turned the hide of the slain dragon into platinum armor. The character became a dragon hunter, and it became a running joke to throw him (sometimes literally) at a dragon the party wanted dead.

If something happens like the second story and you don't want to retcon it then strip the paladin of his powers and send the group off to the appropriate afterlife to retrieve the players lost character. They can even play the dead character on the adventure out of the afterlife. Give the paladin a chance to make it right again and grant the powers back. Bam character arc its a good time.

This situation HAD to have come up before because every fight was using minis but for whatever random reason on my turn I busted out the measuring stick (we use open terrain with no grid but measure squares as 1 inch) and the GM and another player said that premeasuring distance before deciding where I was going to move was "metagaming", I was like "no it's not?" and it became this whole thing. The DM just eventually dropped it and we haven't discussed it since but that definitely weirded me out.

I love retcons when strategically used. It helps patch things, and sometimes can even help avoid major problems when EVERYBODY at the table doesn't like where things are going. We've retconnected moments. Heck, once we even retconned years out of the story back a few... decades ago (oh gods we're old... that was in the year 2000). Then later we even brought characters from the retconned out timeline into the main storyline through the use of chronomancy and chaos magic behind the scenes. I had to deal with one of my characters trying to figure out how to treat another character who was his son from the retconned timeline, even though he never fathered anybody as far as he knew. (BTW, yes, there is a reason why the retcon actually occurred in-story.) Anyway....so long as the use of retcons cause everybody to enjoy the game more, go for it. Just try to do it in a way that doesn't leave people confused and everybody knows what is what. If you do it too often, it can be messy - especially if you retcon more than just a few minutes of story. Happy endings, all. :)

I once played a game with someone who always had to have the first response (even in scenes where his character was elsewhere) and couldn't let other characters have their moments. We were transporting a dragon egg that could communicate. My character was becoming good friends with the unhatched dragon, and after an exchange I said "My monk places her hand on the egg". He couldn't let my character have that special moment to herself and promptly did the same thing with his character. Not to mention he played the character like a total snob trying to raise his social standing to the point he cornered the 16 year old granddaughter of a goddess into winning the chance to "woo" her (as the GM put it, who was allowing this to happen). His character had barely interacted with this NPC and out of the blue announces how important she is to him. Not so important that in the next town we reached his character promptly found someone else to sleep with after declaring his intentions to this 16 year old NPC.

It's not even the first story I head about it. There was that other story where a DMPC kills the Party's Ranger because the Cleric made fun of him -- in an attempt to intimidate the Cleric.

I think it's a case of people being too involved in the game and not thinking enough in reality. He most likely thought "Paladins are stalwart protectors, if someone dies as a result of their actions they would surely feel regret. So if I kill off these characters maybe Paladin will learn a lesson!". Dm needs to step back and take a break.

Retcon or not I would still be really pissy about having my character murdered because of what another player was doing, especially when said player didn't suffer any kind of negative consequence. Why did DM think in the first place that targeting OP was the right way to go? Being that OP is his significant other you have to wonder if there might be something else going on between them...

In a previous session, I was held hostage by the bbeg pointing a spell at my head which our mages Arcana check identified it as Disintegrate. As I was being made to slowly hand over the mcguffin, our assassin decided to fire his crossbow at her. Knowing I was probably dead, I blasted her with frost breath and successfully wrestled the item away from her. When she was ready to fire, the spell fizzled and she said "lol jk, bye" and teleported away. She is one of those joker bbegs. It was a fun session and the dm didn't want to be so cruel just yet.

To me, retcons should usually be a vision that a character has of what could go wrong if things go ahead a certain way. There's usually a character who can kind of have that flashforward and be like "I have to not let that happen"... In this case probably the paladin. I think the DM, while not necessarily doing the right thing, ended up cornering himself. He probably thought the paladin wouldn't be able to continue attacking the dragon with the lives of his friends at stake, but when he did, the DM felt he had to go with it. It's a bit of a messy situation to put yourself in, but I think there are better ways to deal with that.

It's not metagaming for a ranger of all classes to know how long their range is lmao. Maybe you could say that an inexperienced caster might forget the range limits of some of their spells, but even a level one ranger or fighter would probably know by heart how far their bow can shoot.

For the Aita, yes. What you said sounds biased and manipulative just because someone wanted to help things along, be engaging in the game that's wasn't combat. It got on your nerves, and you bringing it up to friends in that way will definitely have them see it from your perspective and will be annoyed at the thought of it. Your dm/bf and you should have inquired on motives of him and the character, but since you were in your head about it and confirmation bias took place with how you framed your perspective, he seems more like a problem than talking to him. Instead," oh he annoys you? Okey kick him"

Sorcerer would know what their spells do from experience. You could maybe argue that for any new spells they get, but when they're for your survival you'll learn fast. So no more metagamey for old spells than a ranger knowing how far their bow shoots roughly. Though there could also be the argument they intuitively know what their spells do because they're a part of them, this would explain why sorcerers always cast the correct spells barring certain anomalies.

It wasn't a big deal but it was meta-gaming. In combat, a person doesn't know exactly how far a target is, they can estimate but they do not know exactly and so they wouldn't know to move another 10' or something c;pser, in order to avoid a -2 game mechanic to their chance to hit. using knowledge which is outside the character's ability to know about game mechanics is metagaming.

Intro makes me want to say claiming meta gaming is meta gaming. Or something else I don't like is meta gaming. 1st story was an unfortunate lack of balancing for glass cannon enemies. 2nd story reminded me of another retconned dragon story before with a dumber paladin attacking a benevolent "beyond ancient" dragon because it was chromatic. Though this was more dramatic and had a good happy ending. 3rd definitely ticked me off with a problem player framing a victim as a problem player. His buddy sounds like an idiot for ignoring how everyone else was also sick of him. 4th story was definitely bad with how the first DM ultimately sided with the horny rules lawyer by making OP change her character to satisfy him. The less we heard about that second fetish campaign the better, at least OP got out.

Metagaming is only abuse of plot knowledge, I hear it misunderstood a lot nowadays. It's also not always bad, but it typically is. One problem with D&D having gone somewhat mainstream is you find a lot of people aping terms and stuff they do not entirely understand, sometimes having gotten clarification from people who also didn't understand them, and of course when it comes to younger people in general, not just gamers, they typically don't want to listen to anyone with actual experience. The term "Metagaming" actually came from "White Wolf" games which let's say had some issues when they first appeared. One of their unique ideas for a while was to not only have their settings blended with the mechanics, but also specific plot lines going on within those settings that were developed in their sourcebooks and oftentimes influenced what some abilities could do. Some settings were more like this than others, and there were a lot of problems especially as certain novels drifted in and out of canonical status, not to mention the generally chaotic method with which the company did writing especially in the 90s and early 2000s but i doubt anyone wants a break down on that. At rate WW started using the term "Metaplot" in connection to it's writing and why they did certain things or why stuff had to work a specific way, and "Metagaming" in an RPG context specifically referred to people making choices and character builds around things going on in the world at large that they could have no knowledge or fore knowledge of and which had nothing to do with a specific GM's campaign or it's plot. GMs running games totally divorced of this stuff in WW was hard to do, because their storyline and metaplot was so incestuous with the rest of it. This term later got extended to include any situation in which a player was basically acting entirely out of out of character knowledge, rather than something they could know in game. Sometimes the situation can be quetionable, and usually when a metagaming accusation is made it's always careful to ask if the player can justify how their character might have a certain bit of knowledge. Basically it's only Metagaming if there is no justification for it, and it's giving an otherwise unfair advantage either in terms of the game's plot, or in terms of balance against other players who are remaining limited entirely by in character knowledge. I've found in practice about half the time most metagaming accusations are pretty much false, as oftentimes a player who knows enough to actually metagame has come up with a way to justify reasonably knowing what they are using.... At any rate, the bottom line is simply acting on knowledge of class abilities you possess is reasonable. Depending on the GM claiming to know what other types of characters can do may or may not be reasonable given how he portrays magic and such within his world. That said when it comes to RPing it should be noted that half of the point of gaming is sort of a tactical challenge, that's not all it is, but it is part of that. One of the signs of a horrible GM is when he starts demanding veteran players intentionally be stupid knowingly due to lack of character knowledge. An example of this would be if say on meeting trolls in The Forgotten Realms setting where they can be pretty common the GM screams that nobody can use fire or acid or anything because they have never met a troll. In most game-designed settings this is not reasonable as such monsters are designed to be fairly common, unless the GM has an alternative world he has specified where such things are now rare it not only makes no sense (especially if you say have geographic regions named after them, and entire clans of warriors calling themselves stuff like "Troll Killer" ) , but it frustrates players because they pretty much have to stop playing seriously. The time when players are new and genuinely don't know this stuff is fleeting and should be enjoyed, but for more established gamers? It's pretty much exactly why metagaming accusations tend to be problematic as much as they help. Unless something is really supposed to be obscure it should be a non-issue... and of course I've found a lot of D&D derivative games like "Pathfinder" solve this issue with "knowledge" skills which someone can just roll against the rarity of a monster if it should be questionable. Unique monsters of course not being part of that body of knowledge. The GM should of course also be aware of their setting as well, for example while in say Greyhawk Beholders were incredibly rare, in The Forgotten Realms Zhentil Keep had an entire "Beholder Corps" historically and used them in groups to overwhelm other armies in a high magic setting. As a result anyone from the key "heartlands setting" who doesn't know what a freaking Beholder is, had to be living under a rock, where in Greyhawk it might be excused that even a moderately well known sage might not know much about them. Context always matters, and remember if say Trolls are now rare, the GM has to consider this in proportion to how he runs encounters. If monsters are rare to the point of ignorance being demanded, they should also be rarely met, with most enemies being other humans or whatever. It does work both ways.

There's good metagaming -- knowledge of the rules that you need to have an exploit in order to effectively play and role-play your character, like the range of your longbow or that the Dodge action imposes disadvantage on attackers. There's also bad metagaming -- your isolated goblin rogue that has worked in the mines surrounded only by dwarves and other goblins somehow knowing trolls are weak to fire without an intelligence check. Know the difference.
