I played once with my Uncle before he left for the Airforce, then my mother got me the original Red Box. So I had to learn to read to not only play, but I was the only one with the books so I had to DM (and still do after 40 years). D&D gave me friends, my wife of 31 years, and so many weekend adventures.

Story time! My stepbrother's former roommate was the person who introduced me to AD&D for the first time. I was 12, it was 1990, and I was over at their rental property doing yard work for my Dad. After I was finished in the yard, I had to wait for my Dad to return after some errand running. Anthony asked my dad if I could stay and have dinner and play games. My dad was fine with that. Anthony pulled down his AD&D Player's Handbook and his chest full of Dice and Ral-Partha miniatures, and gifted me a set of dice. I found out later that these dice were original Holmes Basic Set dice. Probably his first set of dice. He helped me create a Half-Elf Cleric named Mugwump, and he began running a game of what I would find out later was the Keep on the Borderlands and the Caves of Chaos. -Iconic I would find out later. My first character lasted all of 15 minutes of REAL LIFE time, I was poisoned and killed by a Giant Forest Spider on my first night making camp between the nearest city and a remote Outpost, but I burned the Spider to death with a flask of oil and one of my torches, burning his tree down in the process! I don't know where Anthony is now, or whether he is well, and I am not sure if he is still friends with my brother, but because of him, and Dungeon and Dragons, I am the writer and Literature and Latin Language teacher that I am today. Thank you Anthony, wherever you are!

Wild. My own story is similar. To date D&D has been the hobby that’s given me my oldest and truest friends and has provided me the easiest way to make new ones.

I was playing when I was probably 6 or 7. I played with my brother. (THE OLD RED BOX.) stopped playing for a bit. Then, when I was 22 or so, I went through a bad breakup. I was depressed barely left the house except to work and stuff. Then a friend got me back in. It's been a rocky road since. Life gets in the way sometimes. But every Thursday and now Saturday we play something. Not always DandD. But always something . Gaming is my therapy. Pass time and my passion. My wife and I have made friends for life through RPGs .

I'm literally only now 'meeting' D&D now at 37. At first as I was seeing it, it inspired my imagination, but as time went on the past few months as I've looked at learning it - what originally appeared like a game set in a middle earth like world, started seriously looking like pantomime. Cazador in BG3, some of the strange art of the new style, the fans I've been talking to not just of D&D but BG3, which is kind of what drew me to it. Now, I am worried I wont get any grit and grime of the D&D experience that I'm looking for. When I learned that orcs were elves, twisted by torture and dark magic into what are essentially monstrous elves, I was in that curious awe that fantasy is capable of. I noticed I don't feel that for anything about the D&D I'm learning about right now. Yet I do believe I'm in the right wheel-house, and I just don't know where to look to find what I'm looking for. There's a small voice in me saying I have to create it.

The beautiful thing about games like this, or storytelling in general. Is that you have the liberty of creating whatever you want. Follow the voice! Haha.
