I'm very tempted as I'm looking for a good back up amp that doesn't weigh as much as my holy grail 1973 Bassman Ten Silverface housed in a custom 1x12 enclosure with a Eminence Swamp Thang speaker. Great demo and playing, thanks for this. This ticks so many boxes for me, but that lack of headroom seems disconcerting. Do you feel like it runs out too quickly to be a semi-decent pedal platform?

    Noob questions: What’s meant by “headroom” & “running out too quickly”?

  • @legacyShredder1

    @legacyShredder1

    Жыл бұрын

    @@misanthrope8699 Old comment, I know, but I'll answer it anyway. Headroom is the distance between clean and distortion. An amp with low headroom will start distorting at a low volume and low gain setting. An Amp with high headroom will have a wider range on the gain knob between super clean, clean with tiny amount of grit, mild crunch, crunch, heavy crunch, distortion, heavy distortion, then completely overdriven. (Low headroom amps can also distort with a lower volume setting.) Low headroom = more drastic sound with distortion and tone while only turning gain and volume knobs a tiny amount. High Headroom= Turning the gain volume knob more only gradually effects distortion, allowing for more tonal possibilities and more sweet spots on various settings. Low wattage amps tend to have lower headroom. Higher wattage amps tend to have higher headroom. A 100 watt 5150 EVH amp puts out about the same volume of a 40 watt 5150 amp. If the volume output of these two amps are basically the same, then what is the difference? Headroom, the amount of distance between clean tones and heavy tones on the gain and volume knobs. The 40 watt will distort sooner at lower gain settings, and the 100 watt will stay cleaner longer before the serious gain kicks in. Headroom can also affect the dynamics when picking, such as when picking soft or picking hard. Low headroom tends to have less dynamics when picking, and high headroom tends to have a wider range of dynamics when picking. I hope this helps. Edit: High headroom and low headroom is neither good nor bad. It's just a thing. Both styles of amplifiers definitely serve their purposes well.

    @@legacyShredder1 To add to this a bit, headroom in a valve amp can be further split into input headroom and power amp headroom. An amp with low input headroom, even with a lot of power, will get dirtier rather than louder when the input is slammed.

    The Laney CUB-Super Top and 12 combo use fixed bias, meaning that their bias must be adjusted whenever one or more power tubes are replaced; the Laney CUB-Super 10 combo uses cathode bias, meaning its bias should not be adjusted manually (only component failure can throw out its bias, and that must be corrected by a competent technician). This was confirmed to me by Laney.
