The Laney CUB Series SUPER12 15 Watt Valve Combo Amp is a boutique valve amp with a single, HH Custom 12" speaker and all-valve design. You have a large amount of tone control at your fingertips, which means you can enjoy superb clean tones, creamy crunch or all out hard rock sound with the built in Steelpark Black Country Customs boost.
You also have a lush Black Country Customs Secret Path reverb effect built into the amplifier allowing you to sculpt ethereal clean tones drenched in reverb or subtle weight that brings out the nuances of your playing.
You also have a very useful attenuator switch allowing you to drop from 15 watts to 1 watt and retain the dynamics of a valve amp at lower volumes.
The smaller construction, wide array of tonal characteristics and attenuator make it a great amp for home and apartment use.

    @@mickeydiamant4507 If you want a pristine and glassy clean sound then this isn't the amp for you. The cleans are nice but it doesn't have that top end sparkle like a Blackface Fender has. I would say the cleans are smooth and veer slightly towards a typical jazz sound. I like to use a bluesbreaker pedal as an always on clean boost to add a bit of depth and a touch of eq to my base clean sound. This amp likes pedals and likes to be driven, that's what it does best.

    Had the previous version, Laney Cub 15 head and matching 212 cab. Loved the sound but couldn’t play with a band. Couldn’t cut through with acoustic drums. I was really frustrated because I absolutely loved the sound but it didn’t matter because I couldn’t be heard. I’d love to try this one but there are no Laney dealers within 100+ miles of me with the exception of mail order and that’s only Zzounds that I can find.

    Here are my two cents: I have tried A LOT speakers in this amp, modern and originals. For clean jazz tone the legend L 1218 is the best I have tried so far in it. A 16 ohmed G12T75 modern takes out the low mids so makes it sound very sparkly and fendery- good if you want to. A vintage V30 that had a dense steely tone- good for slide guitar. Greenbacks sound very woody, but are not my top choice. G1265- similar to the stock HH 1265 in many ways, very nice. The best was an EVM12L, original, in a thiele cab. And the best overall was an Eminence 16 ohm Lady Luck- unbelievable speaker. So good it make me email Eminence to ask for similar contemporary speakers of them (lady lauck is an OEM Emily speaker) and they informed me that their currently produced equivalents are the CV 75/ 65, Reignmaker, Governor and Legend L1275recommended- and they are correct, you may go with any of these!!! From Celestions for this amp I recommend: Alnico blue, gold, cream, ruby. G12H anniversary- not the Heritage. Any Creamback, especially the H75. V type first, A type second. G1265/ T75. 70-80/ G12P80. From Eminence those I mentioned first plus the GA SC64 plus many others. From Jensen C12N, K2, P12. This amp packs a lot of punchiness, boominess and low mids due to circuit design and small enclosure so you may need to compensate for that with the speaker choices. It is a GREAT amp, totally recommended.

    Hi. That’s really interesting to hear as I have one of these amps and love it - but I’d like to try different speakers just to see if I can get just a little bit more out of it (and just for the sheer fun of messing with gear if you know what I mean!) How did you try all those different speakers with the amp? Did you physically swap the speakers out each time or did you mount the different speakers in an external cab and use the speaker out on the amp? If so presumably the cab that the different speakers was mounted in would have some impact on the sound? Can I also ask what you mean when you say the Greenback sounds ‘woody’? And any thoughts on the Celestion EVH G12? I’m no expert on speakers, and this is my first tube amp, but whenever I’ve used modellers or IRs, the Greenback models or captures /IRs are always the ones I prefer the sound of, so in my head I’ll like the real thing…

    @@littlespaceman Greenbacks suit this amp. All types of them. The EVH Greenback is just another type of Greenback, nothing special. Other speakers that really suit this amp is G12H Anniversary, various Alnico speakers, also Jensens, Eminences, Webers etc. The stock speaker also suits it a REAL lot at least for my taste! Some speakers with very big and deep magnets don't fit in, Cub has a small cab. It all comes down to taste, purpose and experimentation. And musical genre intended! All I did was physical swapping and also external cabs. Nothing digital.

    @@littlespaceman listen, if you love greenbacks, put one in, it's gonna match and it's a classic choice (I would still prefer a G12H Anniversary though for those british timbres). You will never get real bass from a lightweight speaker. On the other hand, heavy duty speakers sound really dull and muffled at low volumes. Lightweight cones, magnets etc are more transparent for cleans. Heavy duty speakers handle distortion better. And so on and so on. Not one thing does everything.

  • @littlespaceman

    @littlespaceman

    Thank you! That’s all really helpful. Interesting you mention how some speakers don’t sound so good at low volumes as to be honest I’ll mostly be playing this amp at low volume (home use) In terms of the sort of sound I’m after, I love the ‘classic rock’ sort of sound, and I love the fact that the Super Cub has a lot of gain to play with too. In my head I think some type of of Greenback is the sound for me, but as I mentioned I’ve only ever heard models or captures of them, never tried a real one. The problem with mounting one in the Laney to try is presumably you can’t really return a speaker that you’ve mounted and tried? 🙄😏 I do see some great reviews of the EVH G12, so that sounds like something that I’d like to try

    I had a HT-5R mkII for 2 months and ended up selling it. I found the overdrive channel very unusable: it went from no sound to full metal in 1 mm twist. The clean channel should work fine with pedals (which I did not want to use at home) but then again, why buy an amp where you cannot use 1/2 of the features. The Laney seems a lot more usable since you can get to high gain by setting the boost on, while still keeping the possibility of having lower gain crunch. My 2 cents.

    'Boutique amp' vs 'budget amp'. Friend of mine is an experienced technician, according to him this is a tweaked Monoprice/Harley Benton Tube15 amp. It has the same circuit and components (except for the speaker), same sound and volume too, but at double the price. Even the knobs and the connections at the back panel are identical. This one doesn't have a physical spring reverb however, just a digital one. They split the 1-15 Watt attenuator switch into 2 inputs and added the 'boost' function. You can buy one hell of a boost pedal for half of the money that this amp costs. LOL. Basically you pay double money for an extra input, a transistor boost that costs $5 max and better QC. Did you research that?
