Justin Fields can’t read NFL defenses, and his time as the Chicago Bears starting quarterback is unfortunately about to come to an end. Fields hasn’t shown he’s capable of playing the position as a passer thus far in his career, and with the Bears off to an absolutely atrocious start to their season, Fields simply is not going to finish the year as the starter. He struggles with processing, the Bears scheme is a disaster, this is a full-on meltdown in Chicago, so what the hell is going so wrong? This week’s episode uses the coaches all 22 to analyze Chicago Bears Quarterback Justin Fields’ immense struggles reading NFL defenses.

Shoutout to Prize Picks for sponsoring this week’s episode, if you use my promo code ROLLINS they’ll match your deposit up to $100: prizepicks.onelink.me/ivHR/ALEXROLLINS This week I’m riding with Kirko going more than 277.5 passing yards, I trust Brandon Staley just about as much as the Bears trust their headquarter security. Gimme Hurts less than 40 rushing yards too, and I threw down on less than for Amon Ra cause he’s been a little banged up

Yup speaking as a Bears fan, I feel bad for Lamar. Fields is the guy that actually needs to switch positions if he wants to make it, because I'm not seeing a guy you want starting fulltime for your NFL team. Unironically he'd probably be a beast in that Taysom Hill utility position role. Give him snaps at QB, RB, WR, TE and let him try to out-athlete everyone.

Purdy is a much better and fundamentally sound QB between the ears; but he doesn’t have half the raw talent of Fields and the top picks in that draft. You’re right that ultimately, confidence and football intelligence trumps raw physical talent as the most accomplished QB ever in Tom Brady proved. But most teams are seduced by raw physical potential than football intelligence and confidence at the draft. Also, most team want to mold their own talent even if they think such talent is raw. This often cause them to miss on the most NFL ready QBs.

They might as well start saying the Browns are the team to beat lol. The NFL will return to normal, and the teams that historically suck will go back to sucking. They always do. The Bears never stopped sucking though, I have no idea where the Fields hype is coming from--aside from maybe now everyone in NFL media is taking the Skip Bayless approach in just saying whatever dumbass comment comes to mind for ratings.

I did see some of Fields throws on slow motion and he definitely has a hitch or two. I think he gets the ball a little too far from his body - watch Jimmy Garropolo as a comparison - and Fields takes his elbow behind his back just before his forward motion. I don’t have a number on his Load-to-Release (LTR) but my eyes are saying 0.4+. But Jimmy, Tua and Aaron Rodgers - when Aaron’s healthy - are just north of 0.3 so they’re both good comparisons I think. (If Fields gets picked on tight-window throws it might be a partial reason. Load-to-Arrival (LTA) = LTR + (time for ball to get to receiver) so LTR is at least a factor, and is more so the shorter the route. Ball speed takes over at some point.)

CJ Stroud actually plays the QB position like it's supposed to be played and didn't use his athleticism as a crutch. His ability to read defenses, consistently make the right decisions with the ball, put the ball into exactly the right place, understand leverage, throw receivers open, throw with proper anticipation, and like 15 other things, is insane. He has the highest football IQ I've ever seen from any rookie QB. And not only does he have the understanding of the game to know what the right decision is, he also has the physical tools and the arm to make it a reality. From watching his tape, it's not an exaggeration to say that he can read a defense and figure out how to exploit it in ~1 second. Potentially less in some cases. Even when teams completely shift their coverage post snap, he's still able to understand what's going on in a split second. It's insane. It's also kind of ironic that CJ is pretty much the anti-Justin Fields. You can get away with playing the QB position in college in a way which just straight up doesn't work against NFL defenses. Especially when you have an absolutely loaded WR room the way that Justin Fields did. He used a bunch of shortcuts and bad mental heuristics, combined with his running ability to play QB at the college level. It prevented him from actually developing as a QB and playing the position the proper way. Basically nothing other than his ability to run with the ball actually translated to the NFL. And he never learned the most important part of the QB position, he completely lacked any real understanding of how to read defenses, much less make it through his progressions..etc. He was basically just playing backyard football with NFL level receivers in college. At best he was able to get away with bad eye discipline, and staring down a single receiver on a rep because they were basically guaranteed to be open at some point and even if they weren't, they could still just out athlete/talent the defender and win the contested catch more often than not.

Crisp analysis on Fields AR! But many people who don’t watch the films don’t want to give up on him because of their expectations from him out of college. IMHO, Zach Wilson at least have the legitimate reasons that he was very raw and inexperienced as a college QB coming out of BYU with little experience playing the position against top college competition; so his learning, providing that he went to a patient and competent team besides the NY Jets, would take longer than most despite being drafted pick2 of rd1. But Justin Fields was at one point the projected #1 pick over Trevor Lawrence. And he proved himself to be a great college QB.

DJ Moore is nice but he's not exactly on the same level as Nuk when the Cards traded for him. Or Stefon Diggs when the Bills traded for him. Its about as bad as the Panthers passing game situation because Young's size limits him to the formations they can run (shotgun) and they can't fool a deep shot game either with receivers like Theilen, Chark, Mingo or Shenault. So defenses just gotta bully the Panthers O-line and play shallow coverage if Young decides to let the ball go.

The way he plays is not how the NFL works and it's not what he's getting paid to do. The way he plays also doesn't translate to the NFL and can't consistently beat NFL defenses. He is getting paid millions to play QB in the National FOOTBALL League. He's not playing Justin in the National Justinball league. The QB position is played the way it is for a reason. He hasn't come up with some revolutionary new way to play the position, he just lacks the mental bandwidth to play the position the way it's supposed to be played. Being able to run with the ball is all well and good, but that's not the primary responsibly of the QB. It's also a completely unsustainable way to play the QB position. No sane team is going to pay franchise QB money to a QB who's running for 1000 yards a season. It's basically a guarantee that they will get injured, and massively limits the length of time they can play the position. QB's can have some of the longest careers because of how the position is played and because they aren't as reliant on pure athletic ability and don't get hit or have to tackle anywhere near as much as other positions. Justin Fields playstyle, is not only unproductive, it takes a position that has one of the longest potential career lengths in the NFL and turns it into a position which has a career length that will likely resemble the HB position which has one of the lowest lengths of career. Justin Fields is basically everything that people criticize in dual-threat QB's. Overly reliant on running the ball, and the athletic ability ends up being used as a crutch which prevents them from ever really developing as a QB who can win consistently in structure, from the pocket. Except Justin Fields doesn't seem to face anywhere near the criticism which other players who are far better than him are subjected to. Many people have said Justin Fields is basically the QB that people like to pretend that Lamar Jackson is, and I agree.

If I am correct this was made on 9/23/2023. After this was made Fields would have another bad game against KC in week 3. The Bears as a whole got off to a slow start through the first 3 weeks. It seemed like something was affecting the whole team. In week 4 and 5 JF had back-to-back games where he threw 4 TD's each for a total of 8. He finished the season off well. Did you change your opinion or is it still the same. Why or why not? Why can't a team make an offense with a QB that is primarily used as a HB? A QB who runs 50% and passes 50%? I would think that and a strong run game with great defense could win a super bowl. Even if Fields can't read why not modernize a 1920's style offense?

I was just reading an article, where Dave Ragone, the Chicago QB coach, when Fields was drafted, stated that his belief was that Fields can, and is, reading these defenses, he's just not pulling the trigger. In the first clip, it's nearly impossible to believe that he didn't see that, so it's almost as if he's anticipating something that doesn't happen. The first clip was a rather egregious example, but there have been a number of others in recent weeks, where he simply didn't throw into a League window, b/c he felt, for whatever reason, the juice wasn't worth the squeeze. I think that he's in his own head, and he's concerned that turning the ball over will cost him his job.

There is a robotic part to his game that is exacerbated when everything around him super clean which is very clear about his limitations as a pocket QB.

The first play you showed…Kurt Warner broke down that play and it’s poor route running that concealed how open the receiver was in the end zone. To our eyes overhead it looks open but even Kurt Warner said it would be hard to see it from Justin’s point of view because the outside guy didn’t get wide enough fast enough. But in general, yes I agree he can’t get through his progressions quickly enough. It may have some the but to do with the coaching switching up his footwork also so his right foot is back instead of the left. But I’ve never seen him go through his 1-3 progressions and come all the way back to 1 successfully.

Never got why they traded so much for Trey to begin with, but I’m also not going to advocate they stick with a qb that can’t get his shit together on the field mentally/schematically just because draft picks - Purdy being around or not. In that situation after three years of Trey having a chance to put it together at least schematically (I know he was injured but this doesn’t prevent you from absorbing all the playbook nuances) and he never could, it’s time to cut bait and move on regardless of who is waiting to step in behind them.

Great video and analysis but in the TB cut vs. cover 3 - the QB read isn't the CB ( who will run with the vertical based on his coverage rules ), the read is the FS reaction. If he jumps the dig, throw the seam, if he widens to the seam throw the dig in first or second window ( scheme should have RB or backside WR in the box to pull up ILB's and make much bigger window for the Dig route ). Either way, this is a simple read for the QB. Whether you have him keying the CB or the FS, the seam should be catching the TD. The pass pro is excellent and the ball should have been out. You are right on the money in that Fields pre-determines his throws and that always is a recipe for your passing game to struggle
