First time I have ever seen a video of Thinking Football. I'm impressed!

It seems to me as an SC fan that his biggest strength is also his biggest weakness. He know how magical he can be, but that causes him to opt into a lot of these crazy plays off of something broken, instead of just taking the L, throwing the ball away, and living to see another down or drive.

Great summary. Josh Allen and Mahomes had to learn it's okay to take 5 yards, not every play needs to be a splash play and Caleb will hopefully learn that. I'd rather try and teach a guy to play a bit more safe than try and teach a guy to be more aggressive. NFL teams will at times make him see if he can take those 5 to 7 yard plays every down all game to test whether he has the patience to do that and for guys like Williams it's so hard to do as it goes against his instincts but he just has to learn a bit of patience and realize, we know what you can do and it's great, now add on to it so defenses can see there is more to you and then you'll be unstoppable.

jamesmarshall - you nailed it bud. it's so hard for guys like allen, mahomes & caleb because they've got that rocket arm. it's hard to break the hero ball habit because it's so, so damn fun. i was a QB at a super small highschool - i thought i was the shit, i thought i could read defenses. played the big schools a couple of times my senior year and boy was i humbled. those defenses were so much different. i used to get away with ripping it all over the yard and it was so fucking fun. played the big boys - figured out i couldn't but still couldn't make myself take the check down. i know it sounds shitty but... it just wasn't fun, it's so fun to be a QB and rip it. i saw an interview with Josh Allen & i could tell he was basically saying the same thing - he just tried to say it more professionally hahahaha.

I wanted to keep Fields too since I thought he was developing. I think Caleb's got a faster release and love his accuracy. I just feel his weaknesses are the same as Fields (not anticipating throws or playing in schedule) while he's not as powerful as a runner more of a scrambler. Although I agree that Caleb missed some easy passes to the flat or just not throwing the ball away, he was also with a defense that was 116/130 and he constantly had to score every possession. He also did not have a line or any players on offense that will be in the first or second round. You put him with the Washington or LSU’s offensive talent, he would look even better. That’s Lincoln Riley’s system. 99.5% of snaps are going to be either from shotgun or occasionally the pistol. Just something Caleb was rarely ever asked to do was play under center. It’s that way with many college QB’s anymore. To me, I believe Caleb has most all of the traits needed to be a special QB. He has all the skills that cannot be coached, and should get more refined as time goes by. Plus, he’ll have D.J. Moore and Keenan Allen to throw to next season, which should help.

I'm no football expert but based upon this and the other Thinking Football video I just watched (Rome Odunze), this is a high quality analytical channel. Both incisive deep dives. Very well done!

He’s walking into a great situation. Poles built a great offense so if he fails it’s on him not the bears for once.

Something that no one talks about is how good Caleb is at setting up blocks for himself!! I am a Bears fan and I had the pleasure of witnessing the greatest of all time at setting up blockers Devin Hester but watching Caleb I see a lot of the same magic. Watching it in slow motion it seems obvious and simple but at full speed you realize these special players can slow the game down and do the impossible for the rest of us!!

Its gonna be a lot of Josh Allen where he has a tendecy to do too much which is why i think the bears are trying to prep for this with moves like Swift and Allen. A cowbell back and a reliable 3rd down target

@@adnsmusic3842 i get the scrambling but the way college evolved since them thats just natural a lot of guys go off script especially since you named 2 guys who are from this system. Lincoln and Kliff both were under Leach at one point and Johnny had Kliff as OC, and Kyler was literally with Lincoln. Thats just the system, but Johnnys arm talent and accuracy are nowhere near Caleb, Johnny had Mike and just quick feet to scramble. Caleb isnt a great athlete but he has elite arm talent that with just enough mobility can still make a big play, id say Rodgers is his best comp for how good he could be.

This was really thorough

Excellent A+ Breakdown. I do think people often put too lofty of a baseline for what NFL success is on these college QBs, but this was excellent stuff. Like right now the 12th best QB in the NFL overall has a LOT of flaws to their game; let alone someone whose closer to 20th like a Baker Mayfield or even Russell Wilson at this point. The criticisms of Caleb taking the easy play are fair but what is interesting is most of his criticisms are things that Bo Nix absolutely excels at; yet people hate Bo lol or at least they hate the idea of him as a 1st rounder (weird but okay). Being good in the quick game and short game has a LOT to do with presnap reads and confidence. Caleb lacks zero confidence and will be starting a lot of games so I am confident he will progress in that area. End of the day it is easier, far easier, to tone down a guy's big game hunting than it is to turn a check down artist into one.

Caleb went from being overrated to comically underrated. Its ridiculous that people thought the Bears would give up the chance to draft him. He consistently does things at the QB position that you can't even pull off in Madden. He wont have to play hero ball on the Bears and they've built a great offense around him to give him a really good chance at succeeding. He's going into a way better situation than most 1st overall QBs. His ceiling is absurdly high. I hope he gets there because it will be amazing to see that level of play at the QB position in the NFL.

Lots of clean pockets in these clips and those USC wide receiver's definitely were good at getting separation. He's shifty and can throw a nice ball. I'm still not sold on him being the answer for the Bears at least. Let's see what Williams can do with an average offensive line going against NFL defenses. We will find out.

Hate to bring up fields but this is exactly what he doesn’t do, the pocket awareness on Caleb is top tier. Fields would just sit and let the guy sack him because it was either that or run, Caleb shows the pocket awareness but wants to throw after using the angles to create another pocket. This guy looks super legit.

hopefully it is easier to "coach down" the hero ball than it would be to "couch up" things like footwork and mechanics

Hmmm... locking onto targets, inconsistent footwork, lack of anticipatory throws, slow processing of the defense, making poor reads, trying to force passes, taking too long to make a decision and throw, bad decision making, fumble risks... why does this all sound familiar?

...and here we go!

Caleb reminds me Favre. You always knew Farve would throw 2-3 interceptable balls a game. And even if you caught them all, he might still pull off a miracle in the 4th quarter.

He hardly threw any interceptions in college. Favre wasn't a particularly intelligent player. Williams impresses as very bright, with a high capacity to learn.

@@dylankrejci9965 Caleb moves great in the pocket, but he also takes forever (like Justin) to throw after the ball is snapped. A lot of these crazy plays only happen because of that issue, and he's forced to escape the pocket or move around more than he should be, almost skittishly. I love that he keeps his eyes downfield though when that happens, something that Justin had trouble doing until this last year. But yeah, with Caleb, you can see his strengths and his weaknesses all in the same play.

Accuracy might be as good as Rodgers. Rodgers is pin point very high percentage. I still think a rookie QB should sit for a year.

This might be the best breakdown on him I've ever seen. The missed pre-snap and progression reads mixed in with him trying to play hero ball a lot are really concerning, but the upside is way too high to hold those against him.. I think he can and will be coached up on those things.. My ideal scenario would be to have him sit a year while you coach it. This won't be the case and most teams don't have that option, but it would be best for his confidence and the mental game at the next level. I hope he ends up being the talent he was in college because boy was he fun to watch, but only time will tell..

The athletic ability isnt in question here. Its gis ability to lead at the next level and his riselience when things get tough
