I'm of the opinion that almost every rookie quarterback shouldnt start - definitely not week 1. The mental aspect and speed of the game increase exponentially at the next level, giving the future of your franchise a chance to watch, learn, and practice, at that speed surely sets you up for more success in the future.

@@ThinkingFootballyup. I’m of the opinion that the Packers are the franchise that knows how to do quarterback development the right way. People don’t remember how poor the reports coming out of camp were for Aaron Rodgers his first year and even into his second. And it was the same thing with Jordan Love. But they handled it the right way. They were patient. And they didn’t just throw them to the wolves when they weren’t ready. And now the Packers have developed their 3rd straight franchise, which is absolutely remarkable.

This sums things up pretty well. I think one aspect that people forget about McCarthy is the fact that he just turned 21 this year. He will have to develop, but that's expected for anybody at his age. I think the tools and age combo is what gets the NFL excited and willing to take the chance. He does have to go to the right spot though. Minnesota has a great offense so that would be a good spot. I think Sean Payton would be a good pairing for him, although he's probably not day one ready in his offense. A team like the Patriots or Raiders would probably be a disaster, but I don't think he'll go at 3, but probably be gone by 13. I'm interested to see his development for sure.

@TheUndefeatedOfTheEast well I don't think it was mentioned in this video. Either way, I believe the fact that he essentially has 2-3 years before he's at the same level of football experience as the other guys is a significant part of why he's viewed so highly. On top of that he was still asked to do so little at Michigan. We really have no idea what he will look like in a typical pass heavy offense. I can understand why that brings both questions and also predicted upside. Bottom line is age + tools = high draft pick.

I think what gets lost in the JJ McCarthy narrative is people thinking teams would be so desperate to get him in top 10 along with that rookie contract amount. In comparison to the QB1~QB3, McCarthy def does not have those crazier tools despite his younger age and may not get to his 2nd contract. Which is why team situation will be very important for him because he def is not a starter caliber rookie and I probably agree with the sentiment of many that he will benefit from sitting like Love did (but for less longer). I don't see him as a bonafide franchise QB but he'll be fine if he ends up as an experienced veteran bridge QB type for a team with better pieces on offense.

It may not play out that way. There are 6 available QBs in this draft. 4 teams, Broncos, Vikings, Commanders & Patriots do not have what most people would consider to be a #1 starter & 2 others, the Giants & Jets _might not_ have one. Do you know what QB prospects are expected to be 1st-rounders in _next year's_ draft? *No one.* As soon as GMs realize this, the Pats & Giants at least are a _LOT_ less likely to trade down & the Cardinals or Chargers could demand quite a hefty ransom for doing so. While most of us want to see Malik Nabers paired with Justin Herbert, there's no point in the Chargers drafting him. They just hired Greg Roman, their third straight completely inept OC. You may know him as the guy who took Lamar down from an MVP in a league with Brady & Rodgers to Daniel Jones levels of production making everyone think he was a glorified RB. Herbert can't run like Lamar. Between that & his o-line plays, expect Herbert to get injured yet again.

My prediction is that he doesn’t go top-5 like most people think. QBs get pushed up a little bit but NFL teams are more disciplined than we give them credit for. 2022 Pickett at 20 and then not another until Ridder in the 3rd, people thought Willis was a top-5 pick that draft. 2023 Levis falls out of the 1st when he was favored to go 2nd overall by betting odds a week before the draft. This could age poorly but 🤷‍♂️

INB4 people will get at you with 'but teams are more desperate for starting QB talent this time around'. But I doubt they are that desperate enough to push all their chips in for draft assets just to move to 5th~9th for JJ McCarthy. Unless its a GM that knows their job is gone by this season and wants to do that move out of spite/owners' wishes. At the very least QB1~QB3 this year looks like they can start for 'bad' NFL teams this year and be their respective teams' franchise QB (with a potential for that 2nd contract/extension). Nothing about JJ screams that about me and I would trust the NFL GMs/Owners for that since they have the money. The draft fans who are heavy into the speculation certainly don't.

To be fair to the inconsistent accuracy and anticipation and not well polished processing, he is the youngest and most inexperienced of all the QBs. Many of these clips are from the TCU game where he was 19 years old. Part of the hope with him is those aspects of his game did get better this year as opposed to last year. A lot of it is also tied to his footwork. As you can see when he’s late his stance is super wide and he overstrides. I think with his natural football instinct and playmaking ability on top of the athleticism he can develop those shortcomings. Even Maye and Caleb were both 21 last year during their final college seasons. JJ didn’t turn 21 until a couple weeks after the national championship. But because of some of those timing and processing things situation will matter a lot for him. I don’t think he has an elite ceiling but if fostered well he could be close to like a Dak Prescott.

  • @t4d0W

    @t4d0W

Close to Dak? Dawg Dak was a legit starter even in his rookie year in part because of continuity with an offensive mind like Linehan. Along with Dak's improvement with his arm, accuracy and near quick reading post snap. Even showed improvements with accuracy when the Cowboys got worst in parts of their offense. Only fault Jerry has with Dak was not paying him longer term for cheap as he became a fringe top 10 QB. QB market continues to grow and Dak gets to play his final year where he will be in demand next season and Jerry being cheap will get him no QB.

  • @finzfan47

It's so funny listening to new engladn pats fans talk about him. For some reason someone told them that Mccarthy is the most pro-ready and has the highest floor. They think he's a safe pick. I've said the exact opposite. He's one of youngest guys in draft, he's still growing into his body and will improve his arm strength. His footwork sucks. All those misses you show are because he felt pressure and would throw off balance or rush his drop back and just mess up a regular 3 step drop. That is alarming, but that is also something you can fix. That's why I think JJ has a really high ceiling. If he can get his mechanics and footwork consistent, he will be a good NFL QB. And mark my words, his arm isn't done growing. When a coach fixes his mechanics it will look like a diffferent qb. Why I really like him in a few years is the athletiscm, the natural arm talent, and obsession with football. I think he's one of the guys who will work as hard as he needs to to get the job done. It may take a few years but he's going to be a good NFL level starting QB by year 3 or 4.

Daniels will get his own video but I'm not allowed to post SEC footage to youtube so it will only go on our patreon. It's very difficult to write a short video about a Quarterback - to really understand a QB you have to watch a season and a halfs tape and that usually throws up a lot to talk about. I'm hoping to do a Nix and Penix ones post draft - but QB videos also take an extremely long time to make accurately - so we will see how many I can make.

I do think the things he excels at are the building blocks required to grow and develop into a top-tier QB. Don’t think this was a fair video to him. U showed a lot of highlights from his first season as a starter and made it out like that version of him was the Michigan finished product. He definitely has a lot to work on but he took care of the ball, he has shown he can throw in the face of pressure, and he is athletic. I think the biggest thing he needs is more reps which is weird to say about a guy who started 29 games but it’s true. He needs more game reps throwing the ball in game. What is interesting about him, is that usually guys who threw the ball as little as he did don’t have much tape to show of them making NFL plays. He doesn’t have a lot of throws but he makes a lot of NFL plays. The volume of them just isn’t as high as Michael Penix and Caleb since they threw a lot more. He is a unique prospect but that makes sense because Michigan was a unique National Championship team. First team I can remember since Auburn that will have so few 1st round picks. JJ may be their only one. But UM had a lot of quality guys which is why they will break the NFL draft pick record. Not to mention their coach in Harbaugh was unique at the very least 😂

The accuracy issues you highlighted I think are somewhat nit-picking when the other top prospects share some of these traits too. I personally don’t think any of the QBs besides Williams are truly top 5 players in the draft. As a Michigan fan I don’t want him to go top 10 and get destroyed beyond a bad line. Well a 'smart' GM/team would rather put their chips in a top 5 QB pick who can at least start day 1 or become a franchise starter within the early outset of their rookie contract. Along with having enough film with their unique tools to have them become a top 10 (or even fringe) NFL QB. Hell fans think NFL teams would be tempted with 'flashes' but look at guys like Levis or Malik Willis whom the consensus bought into thinking they were round 1 guys or great value QB drafts just outside of the top 10. NFL thought differently when those guys were only day 2 material.

This video is obviously click bait. This is alot of video from his Junior season. Show his senior season where he is much more improved. McCarthy can definitely be a franchise qb if the coaches have patience and let him completely develop. The Vikings have to have patience with JJ. If they do that he can be a heck of a franchise qb. Qbs careers are ruined by putting them in the wrong situations. If Mahomes went to the Bears there is no way he is a franchise qb at this point in his career. Plus, there is no way the Bears would be paying him a $400 million dollar contract. If Justin Fields was drafted into a better situation he would be way better. In Chicago he was running for his life. Then the next season they try and turn him into a pocket passer. Thats teaching the totally wrong things. If he went to a team with a good offensive line he could have been taught to go through his progressions. But he was running for his life. It will be interesting to see if the Steelers are able to turn his career around. Which i believe they definitely can. He's an extremely hard worker and he wants to be successful.

I do worry about him being able to pick up on KOC's scheme which is so heavily based on timing and anticipation, and the way KOC desperately switched between qb's last season doesn't give me confidence that he will be patient enough to give JJ time to sit and learn before being thrown to the fire.

msu fan and i saw this guy ream my absolutely washed team for almost 50 points last year. I think Mccarthy is getting pushed to the top 5 by a lot of media talk who want as many qbs to talk abt early as possible for their draft coverage. I don't think he'll be there, but he's the perfect late first early second round guy. Hope he does well and doesn't go to some garbage organization

i've seen tom brady miss reads also but that doesnt mean he wasnt a franchise quarterback, missed throws it happens to even the best. the key is 3rd downs and playing well under pressure which mccarthy excels at.

I'm not looking for him to lead us to the promise land right away. However, I trust O'Connell to make him his #1 priority to develop, so that McCarthy will one day be our franchise QB for years to come.

That's why I never bought into Minnesota offering three number ones to get their hands on McCarthy, he'll be a backup through his career with occasional starts. He's a huge overreach if taken in the top 10 he is a mid 3rd early 4th at best

Michigan's run game and excellent o-line made JJ's job easier than it otherwise would have been. But he was a good player and improved year over year. I think he's coachable and went to a good spot in Minnesota. I'd give him a 65% chance of growing into a franchise guy. Worth a first round pick. Stated as a die-hard OSU fan and alum.

Understand these QB’s are at different levels of development. While these first round draft picks show promise, what is difficult to assess is what their ceiling is. The better ones may have a lower ceiling while one that’s that’s not too far behind may have a much higher ceiling. Generally, these guys reach their full potential if they are allowed to set a yr or two, learn the system and benefit from NFL level coaching. But let’s remember that discipline of the field is a big part of the equation. Remember Johnny Football? He had all the talent, all the ability but a big NFL Payday ruined him. Had he had the discipline? He would not only still be in the league but a top tier QB in this league but we have seen this before at other positions and the end result is pretty much the same. Long story short-short the draft is an educated crap shoot. We have seen many number ones go bust and guys like Brady come along and you seriously question the abilities of the scouts.

As a Vikings fan of course I'm hoping for the best outcome. But you never know obviously.... But the potential in JJ is there... And he's very hard working.... His attitude reminds me a lot of Tom Bradys which he is actually really close with... Not saying he's gonna be the next Tom Brady... But it seems like he's headed in the right direction

Bob Quinn as Lions GM reached for Jeff Okudah at pick 3 in the 2020 draft. He is now working as senior personnel/exec under Andrew Berry for the Browns. He's now put in a position to not fuck shit up building a roster. It is very fucking clear scouts/GMs mess up on their optics reaching for talent. Some are just fortunate and lucky enough to still have their job security.

@@nathanlawson313 learn what cherry picked means lil bro😂 this isn’t cherry picked, it’s called examples. You can go through any of his games and find the same issue he struggles throwing receivers open. The point of a film breakdown is to show the good and the bad of a player so why would he show good passes when he’s talking about his accuracy issue?😂 Use common sense and actually watch the tape. Btw I could care less cuz that ain’t my real name, nice try tho kid
