WE KNOW IT BROKE, BUT LET'S FIND OUT WHAT ACTUALLY BROKE! THIS VIDEO SHOWS THE TEAR DOWN ON THE OTHER GUYS 500 CADILLAC MOTOR AND WHAT WE (MEANING I) LEARNED.

I let a blown head gasket on a Previa supercharged van sit for years and had a similar issue. I rebuilt and ported the head and valves. The block deck was pitted severely. I did not dissemble the block. Left it in the car. I cleaned the rust out with a red scuff pad. Then hand sanded the cross hatches back in with 600 grit wet and dry. Cleaned out a zillion times with oil and paper towels. Glued the head gasket back on with JB weld in the pits. Surfaced the head .020”it is running to this day 20k Miles and 4 years later. It currently has a custom stainless mandrill bent 2.5” exhaust with long tube try Y header I built for it. Boost with stock pulley is now 2 lbs. was 6lbs. Before mods. I had to install a high flow fuel pump to maintain fuel pressure at full throttle. It has a massive power increase and 4mpg mileage improvement. Does not burn oil or smoke. No piston rattle and 178k miles and going strong. Next up is bigger injectors, matched to Supra airflow meter and custom crank pulley that a made for more boost. Then Supra intercooler. ( free parts I had laying around. So cleaning off rust worked for me.

Quick check your distributor. Pop the cap and put a socket on the crank. Wiggle the distributor shaft to feel any play. Move the crank back and forth to make sure the cam and distributor gear are not binding preventing you from feeling the play. Next, grab the advancement weight and pull out ward. You may need to pop the weight spring off for this test. There should be no in or outward movement only left and right circular movement on the pin. Bad weight pins will give you vary early timing advancement, over advancement and erratic timing at idle.

Richard, the Cadillac is a very durable engine. Better head gaskets and or head studs would correct that problem. Mainly the head gaskets. The Felpro doesn't have the 'good' fire ring. It will hold up to pretty high cylinder pressures provided the ignition timing is in the right range. But too much timing along with detonation will kill the gaskets quick. Normally at the rear of the block above cyls 7 or 8. They're closest to the water passages. Ball hone the cyls with WD40 and call it good. It'll seal up. I've really enjoyed your series on the 500 Cadillac.

Forgot to mention stock supercharger is two lobe roots. Electric clutch with decent inter cooler. But system has no map sensor. Uses tps and airflow meter to calculate load and switch bypass valve and supercharger charger on. Ecu also operates AT trans. First pass trans slipped going into second. I changed out fluid to Redline racing and raided line pressure. Spins tires in first and second now once super low stall speed is overcome. Hilarious passing “sports” cars in faded paint beat up van.

Like you said, its just a head gasket. I know some honda guys like like to wire ring their decks with positive set sleeves. Insane overkill on getting the head to seal. What ends up happening is the head can't lift and it hurts something else. If you have a racecar and a spare engine in the trailer that's one thing but for most normal guys the gaskets can act like a fuse to stop you from eating the important stuff.

@@Future-Preps35 I like copper head gaskets but they are kind of specialized now. With how good mls gaskets are now guys that build race engines won't use copper unless there is a weak head bolt pattern or lots of power. For this Cadillac engine with its stock pistons I really think that copper gaskets are serious overkill, if you are lifting the head you are doing something that will hurt something that is harder to fix.

Seems a bit odd the the second cylinder back on each side suffered from head gasket failure. And the failure was on the intake manifold side of both gaskets.

I’ve been sitting on a 500 caddy for 15 years waiting for that day... it’s going in a 84 Chevy one ton with 34,000 miles that I’m doing a “retro Silverado “ with the 2020 grill/headlight assembly with Denali running lights updated mirrors, 65 phantom Cadillac taillights etc. with 11/2 ton Volvo C303 portal axles and a V-plow themed “yard truck” I’m a humble man but if that ole beauty needs a good home with tough love I’d be forever grateful 😁🤞

Soak the bad cylinders in diesel and atf for a week. Vacuum all the crap out of it and slap it back together without copper coat. It will run perfect. That's a mens warehouse guarantee.

If that cyl can't be saved ( and as long as the piston don't get damaged removing it ) it would be cheaper to sleeve that one cyl back to match the piston that's in it rather then bore and hone all eight plus new pistons plus matching the new pistons weight to the old set being replaced.

What happened to Project Nova ?

From what I've always heard these big Cadillacs are notorious for blowing head gaskets under pressure. I'm sure there are ways around the issue, but that's why I've never tried to turbo one of them. Good that you decided not to install that engine in the Nova... It would quickly break that fragile rustbucket in half. Lol... "big bang" Nova.

You should see what my Ford Vulcan 3.0 V6 looked like after a year of sitting post head gasket failure. It's on my Instagram feed. Ball hone and new rings fixed it up.

The stud kit fits the motor but doesn't clear the stock rocker arms they figure by that point you have aftermarket rocker arms
