    Good thing with the caddy 472 and 500s , even after 100k miles on it they'll still have cross hatch marks in the cylinders they rarely need a rebuild and they love a cam swap, 76cc closed chamber heads, an intake . Been building these Cad engines since the late 90s.

    I had a Fleet of 10, 1968-72 Cadillac Fleetwood Limousines all with the 500cid engine. Never had any problems requiring the heads to come off. They had the double wall exhausts that would occasionally collapse after being driven through a deep cold puddle. Instant power loss if they still ran at all! Replaced all of them with single wall pipe. The other thing I did was delete the OEM fuel pumps and replace them with electric ones. They all had those damned Carter Thermoquads. Edelbrock to the Rescue! They drove beautifully. Better ride than a Roller. They were NOT fast!

    I'm fairly certain it had timing and tune issues. Did you at least replace that sloppy factory vinyl timing gear? Remember, that 'SAE net HP' was a solid 40 percent less than the engine really made-it was done to make the auto insurance industry happy, and for eco-regs. The EFI version actually made more power than the carb version-and was a lot nicer to drive. Keep a spare temp sensor in the glovebox, tho. I have a factory EFI '78 DeVille that's supposed to only have 185HP, yet from stoplight to stoplight it will embarrass all those turbo Audis that try their little pass on the right trick. They fail-and lose to a big ole' green, chrome bedecked, 4200lb American couch-mobile! It's pretty awesome.

    Usually the factory cast pistons don't respond well to that increased compression in the 500s. Ring lands tend to collapse. I for one would have liked to hear some further explanation of why they went for a 425 head (with considerable additional machine work and expense) over the stock heads or earlier 472 castings.

  • @kevin2960

    425 heads are prone to blow head gaskets on 472-500 engines. The water passages are different and get really close to the fire ring. Better off changing pistons and decking heads. I have done the early and later heads. I would say the later 120cc heads are great for the street, small chamber are probably better for race only however there are several aluminum heads now so just ditch the iron. I would always recommend the grooved cam bearing on any Buick or Cadillac. Me personally would get the heavy stock pistons out. Get weight out of the bottom end and balance, then run roller rockers and you can actually rev it😂

    These boys are in dream land USA. I had many 425 caddys then moved up to the 500 c.i. Cadillac engine. I also rebuilt several TH400 transmissions. Getting that much power out of that engine with those mods is not gonna happen. I spent over 10k on mine. Best parts available I got 500hp and 600 torque. These fools have been taking carb cleaner hits.

    I got an old '76 Coupe DeVille for cheap, with the 190hp carbed 500, the injected has 210hp... on paper, actual numbers I ain't got a clue. But seeing a video like this gives me hope for the old lump, maybe the 500 can be made into something functional beyond a way of quickly setting fire to fuel while managing to float down the road holding onto the steering wheel in fear, as Norway... ain't all big highways, it's like taking a boat to cross the mountains, slow and ya get seasick :P Still enjoy it, just didn't seem like the most efficient engine for something strangled due to the oil crisis, they went the opposite direction of the last oil crisis car I had, a '78 Mustang II with the 2.8 V6, 90hp, but a tiny light car that was surprisingly good for its age, a light nimble American car from the 70's almost sounds like a joke. :P The other USDM car I've owned also felt like an oil crisis car despite being an '80 model, 140hp 4.9 V8, a 1980 Buick Century Estate Wagon (basically a Malibu wagon) with a 301 V8, but not with the turbo that the Trans Am had, a lazy low powered engine for its size, but enough torque to keep up with "sporty" cars from the 80s on the straight. I have no idea why I went on about that, I'll just blame my ADHD and move on, as what I was trying to say is, thanks for showing a way to keep the 500, it'd be more interesting to keep the huge thing, than swapping in something smaller and newer.

    Back in the old hot rod days you took a 500 cubic inch Cadillac engine took the heads off a 472 Cadillac engine installed them on the 500 and it gave you 14.5 to 1 ratio combustion. You could buy an adapter to put big block Chevy headers on it crane made a cam for it and all you had to do was come up with your own homemade intake and you had a beast. Hot rod magazine put one in a Chevy chevette one time.the carburetor ended up sitting around where the windshield frame met the cowl. So yeah any big block didn't run on just horsepower it was pure torque. How to know my big block Mopar 440 used to beat those small block Chevrolets every Sunday at the drag strip.

    Suggestions or options: Shave the door handles off those side loader doors, Revisit the engine with a black spray can, Lose the padding on the roof if it is still there; that stuff is a rust encourager, Why the iron heads? Nothing aluminum available to shed some additional weight? As for tearing down the bottom end, the test drive didn't show any blues, but also no mention of any pre tear down compression test. This motor spent its life trolling along a slow speeds or at idle, but it would still have been a good idea to pop the oil pan to mine the bottom for nuggets and check the crank end play but hey, I'm not the builder, they are. Oh yeah, that Caddy pickup conversion idea a thread or two down the list would be both killer and a weight remover; keep the side doors to make it a real one off.

    I'm not a Chevy hater but when you see old pontiac, olds, Buick, and Cadillac engines being torn down, you can see they put a lot more engineering into the architecture. Built to last. The engineers at Chevrolet did some amazing things with attaining power out of what needed to be a cheap design for affordable pricing. Let's face it, Chevrolet was sort of the Kia of the car market in the 1950's and 60's. There wasn't really a cheaper American car on the market. The simplicity of design helped attain that cheap price point. I mean..... the small block Chevy is the most legendary v8. So much power and potential for not a lot of money. But BOP and Cadillac engines were just so much better built and designed.

  • @chrisroberts7638

    @chrisroberts7638

    Back before GM "corporatized" the engine designs in the late 70's (Chevy 305's and Olds 307's in everything...) Each division had its own engineering dept and permission from corporate to go their own way on the design of the engines. As you stated since Chevy made the low cost entry level cars the engines (at least the SBC) were designed to be lower cost since the overhead on a Chevelle was lower then an mid or upmarket Olds Cutlass Supreme, Buick Skylark, Pontiac LeMans (these three were a Chevelle body style with luxury trim and more refinement - to include the engines) The BOP cars had higher profit margins which back then allowed their engineering depts to make higher quality engines - higher nickel content, closer tolerances, novel applications like the TH425 "Unitized Power Package" front wheel drive setup used in the Olds Toronado and Cadilac Eldorado; and the GMC Motorhome once the divisions were required to "share" their engines with each other. Note that Cadillac never shared their innovations with the other divisions; no 472 in an Impala - although many a Cadillac ended up with that famous Olds 350 Diesel and some had the 305 SBC (lots of pissed off customers in that era lol) My cousin has a 1970 Chevelle as "bare bones" as you could get... 307 SBC with two barrel, manual drum brakes, no AC, manual steering, bench seats and AM radio. A 1970 Cadillac Coupe Deville had power everything standard - note that the 472 series engines are easily identified by the AC compressor mounted to the intake manifold with the radiator hose doing a fancy bend around it. This was done since ALL Cadillacs have AC, standard on all - not an option. The 472 was designed to rev low and produce torque to drive all those accessories and be able to move that 5000+ pound beast into traffic and have power on-demand with no harsh noisy revving. Later on with the Malaise era emissions and fuel economy requirements power was way down... 190HP 500 and the 368 (5 inch bore centers, 10.5 inch deck height for 368 smog-choked cubic inches? Not to mention the one with the Radio Shack cylinder de-activation and then that horrid HT-4100 which most V-6's of the time had more power.
