Yeah, it's a very creepy world. The thing he was saying about them being controlled like dolls was also a good hint on the whole ordeal.

I saw the South Park episode first, i thought they were being cruel with the hideous singing. Oh how wrong i was , good job Matt and Trey, spot on.

I never thought Mark would consider Busted a gold standard for anything, but as someone who had their CDs on constant rotation when I was about 9, I think I agree with him on this. Jonas Brothers could never get close :P On a different note, there's a really good Nine Inch Nails live film that I'd be interested to see Mark review (not that he will, it came out in '07). Really tight filming and stark lighting used to great effect.

yeah, that's a very good point, people talk about how those kids who do rubbish pop are just young etc. Laura Marling wrote Failure at the age of 14/15 and her whole first album before the age of 18, youth is not an excuse for being bad. Their music is bad because the industry has realised that you don't need to write good songs to make money, publicity and hot teenagers will do.

every time I think I would love to watch movies for a living, I remember that kermode has to watch this and Justin bieber ...

nah look at him, he's one of those rockabilly revival guys you only see at shows, never just walking around on the street or in the queue in front of you in a shop or on the next floor up at your work (where do they go in the day?)

The devil's advocate? Really? And I think I'd quite like to hear Mark ranting uncontrollably about 3D, now that I've actually watched a film in 3D. All I got out of it was a headache and eyestrain. There were more interesting 3D effects in the 3D advert before the actual movie.

If Kermode had enjoyed this on any intellectual level I would have lost all interest in his opinion. Phew!

I usually like Simon Mayo but I'm sorry he's talking absolute bullsh*t here. Kermode is spot on about the JB music, it's NAFF; he mentions McFly and Busted and these are good comparison because, yes both those may be a bit bubblegum pop and not life changing music but they did produce some catchy tunes for young people and could really play their own instruments and you didn't feel there was anything manufactured about them. JB music is just shockingly bad, plastic Disney money-making machine

Mark, I enjoy your reviews, but you say in this review words to the effect of: ´´you have to judge this film on the basis of who it is made for´´. I think that´s praiseworthy but you are not consistent in this approach. You have slammed many films (especially romantic comedies, which obviously weren´t made for someone of your tastes) purely on the basis that you personally didn´t enjoy them.

The Jonas Brothers make me laugh. They're just a sick Disney Channel product. They have nothing to do with real music. They're pretty much the same age as Guns N Roses were when they made Appetite For Destruction. Just look at the difference. Hell.. Black Tide are even younger than them. The Jonas Brothers is all about MONEY. Not music...

I can't believe that the good Doctor has, by his own standards (exemplified by past rants) succumbed to the Cult of Evil Mediocrity. He should have ranted on the J. (I can't even say the name) brothers till there was no doubt that most pop music signals the complete de-evolution of the human species. At least he cited the Monkees as an example of how good pop music can be. He knows better. He even played in a band that wasn't half bad.

Is Simon Mayo kind of thick or is he putting it on just to annoy Mark? Because I've watched about ten of these reviews now and he's either interrupting or not getting it or being kind of annoying in a tangenty sort of way. Just watch the South Park episode, friend. I think the fake JB songs on that one are better than the real ones.
