UK exclusive: U2 on their Las Vegas show at new ‘Sphere’ concert venue

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. But not this, not if rock giants U2, their opinions or their new concert venue are involved.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
The vast sphere, apparently the biggest spherical structure in the world, cost nearly two billion pounds to build, and seats an audience of 17,000 of whom 10,000 can feel the music in their specially vibrating seats.
Our correspondent Siobhan Kennedy went to meet Bono and The Edge for a UK exclusive interview in Las Vegas.

We booked the Nov 1st concert in Vegas, it will be epic!!! I saw this awesome band in Vancouver, 1994, got the ticket last minute, it was a sold-out concert, i had a hunch, so i called in about tickets and sure enough, they moved the stage and new seats became available, so for $36 I got centre stage, 3rd row, it was amazing! And before the concert there was a MuchMusic video booth that we were told that Bono and the Boys would select the best video for in the show. The concert was great. High energy, great musical anchors that made up my life. When it ended, the crowd was cheering ‘encore, encore, encore’, and finally this HUGE screen lowered from the stadium roof and BOOM, there was ME on the screen talking! The girls on both side of me were excited and poked me saying, that’s YOU!, as U2 came back on! I can’t remember the song they played next, i wish i could. If any one remembers this and has a picture or better memory, I am all ears.

What planet is Bono living on? The billionaire planet? I live in the south of Ireland and there's nothing fair about the system here, there's a raging housing crisis while a third of elected politicians are landlords, a hospital crisis where hundreds lay on trolleys in hospital corridors with consultant waiting lists out the door, an inflation crisis where small incomes struggle to cover the cost of living, while a select few cream off the top. Bono made a name for himself as altruistic in Africa, when it came and comes to his own country, his mouth was firmly shut, through decades of political corruption while U2 base their business abroad to avoid tax, so he's partly silenced himself on domestic politics in his own country to amass more millions in tax exile.

  • @harryireland1935

I tend to agree with you here. What he doesn't understand is that if you have almost a billion in wealth and had the most luxurious life, you lose the ability to tell other people how to think, act or who to vote for. I admire Bono, but please...shut the f**k up. And I feel you, I'm in the South too and the propertycrisis is just hopeless, it's disgusting, the sheer level of greed, corruption and collusion between politicians, bankers, central bankers, speculators and investmentfunds. But I promise you, eventually, something will break. Out of chaos, a better system will come.

Of course, that's all changed since U2 became mouthpieces from global elites, the EU and were severely suffering from TDS. Over the last couple of years the mood has completely shifted from admiration to 'please shut the f*ck up'. Rich, overpaid narcissistic arseh*les lecturing the public from their private jets and multimillion dollar mansions.....people are rejecting this BS.

@@fitycalibre7555 you must not understand U2’s origin story. But, even the “outliers” need money, I suppose. What is your point?

Yeah, that happens when a band becomes a corporation. To a certain extent, I can understand having to pay 1000 employees is a big responsibility, but an entire month in Vegas? That's a bit much. And sadly, being a political mouthpiece for any 'current thing' is too much as well. I've been a fan of their music for 40 years!!!! But I just can't deal with the speeches, the lecturing....particularly the idealizing of the EU with the EU flag and stars during New Years Day (videos of that here on YT). At that point, you overstep your purpose as musicians to entertain your audience and you become a tool of propaganda. That's crossing a line.

What’s the difference between God and Bono? God doesn’t strut around Dublin all day thinking he’s Bono. Bono. Neoliberal tax evader extraordinaire, willing servant of political power, friend of Bush and Blair, self-serving Company Man and part-time singer. To quote Dave Marsh: "‘Bono as that little boy in man’s boots, surrounded by forces he fathoms no more than a five-year-old fathoms the perils of the sea… not so much a huckster as a sucker; not a con man so much as a victim of the world’s greatest con artists; not an egomaniac but someone so insecure he has found ways to be shielded from almost all harsh realities’" Read "The Frontman: Bono (In the Name of Power)" by Harry Browne instead of this nauseating piece of sycophantic client churnalism by Channel 4.

They pay millions of tax in Ireland, personal tax, employ staff, and generate employment and in some cases tourism. They earn their money around the globe, so why should they pay all the taxes to there.

@@andrew6978 Well said, musicians especially are gifted with the right and left hemispheres being in balance which gives them a unique higher perspective that prevents them from being divided, but instead see things for what they are. Conservatives/fascists have always been authoritarian, it is there where religions are rooted, many of us out there have been awakened enough to see the truth.
