I liked knowing, though I feel like it wasn't quite worth the four stars that Ebert gave it. At the same time, this review (at least Colin's part of it) feels overly harsh, and constantly referring to Cage as "horse face" is especially unwarranted.

To be honest, I quite enjoy Knowing. Cage was indeed horseface on the basis of this film, Alex Proyas did a good job at sticking true the film's Twilight Zone-isn premise without copping out. However, the one true defendor towards the film which is considered great, is Roger Ebert.

Just watched the movie, it's really not that bad at all. I can't really understand Colin Murray's hatred of it, because if you apply that level of criticism to this film then you'd have to say 90% of films are the 'worst film ever made'. Kermode is pretty bang on and I'm glad he stuck up for it a little. It's a perfectly watchable and enjoyable movie. Something like a 6 out of 10 i'd rate it.

I can never tell whether or not Nicolas Cage is giving a comedic performance. I first saw him in Moonstruck. I remain undecided. As for Knowing, I resented the way I was suckered into watching an pro End Times/evangelical movie in the guise of science fiction.

I agree with the criticisms about Mark's comments on Cage's looks. I'm a fan of Mark, but if those kind of comments were made about a woman he'd be quite cross about it. And quite rightfully so. I don't see why a male actor shouldn't be spared the same kind of treatment.

Plane Crash Scene; Nick is talking to a cop, the cop makes a face of astonishment because he's sees the plane coming.. then.. the plane comes from a different direction! What the hell was the cop looking at? The ending of the movie paid off for me. Certainly not one of the worst movies ever. 'Bad Boys 2' is the worst movie ever.

The twist of Knowing, well, I would hardly even call it a twist, it's just the movie dumps out everything it did and starts anew with this new situation, which is the worst kind of ending. I don't think the acting is bad though, however John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness is the worst acted movie I've ever seen and I love it. Also Signs is bad, I would argue that people arguing otherwise is what ruined Shyamalan, it convinced him that people's standards weren't as high as he initially thought.

I don't watch many movies so I can easily say that Knowing is the worst movie I have ever seen in my life and its all because of that ending. I defy anyone to explain what the aliens/angels were trying to do with the numbers because it goes beyond not making sense and being random; what you think they are trying to do actively contradicts itself. You would think it was to get people to come to the pods at the end but they can kidnap the kids at any time. And they do.

@@jasonwinney7694 Almost a decade later and the scars remain as sore as ever. *Why bother using the code and getting Nic to believe the truth when they can just kidnap kids at will. Nic is powerless to stop them. Him agreeing to it at the end is pointless. *Why bother convincing Nic when the end of the world is obvious? Everyone knows Earth is doomed so the aliens can just pick up the kid then and there and Nic would be happy. And the aliens can predict the future so they know this would work. *Nic doesn't need to know the pick up point. The aliens can just kidnap / politely pick up the kid at his house. *Why even bother with the code? Why not just write a letter and send it out a month before? The answer “because that is a lame movie” isn’t a good reason. Its quite literally literally literally the most contrived nonsense I have ever seen outside of Deadpool fanfic. *Why wait till the last hour to pick up kids? Why not secretly kidnap millions over half a century? *Convince the child? That’s a cool theory. Still makes no sense as the kid doesn’t decipher the code AT ALL. And they can kidnap him easily. And if he protests he will stop once he realizes his kidnappers are saving him from a doomed world. And why use the code when a letter works just fine? *We see at the end that thousands of kids are getting picked up. So there are two options: A) Nic is literally the only person in the world who deciphered the code and it was all a waste of time as the aliens kidnap the kids from the parents who can't decipher the code. B) Everyone figured out the code, but somehow it didn't become the biggest story in history. 100% irrefutable proof of future sight, millions of lives in the balance, billions of dollars on the line. But for half a century this was kept a complete secret.

Well, if we are to believe that these were angels and what people wrote about in the Bible, would make sense that they must allow freewill to decide. Ultimately I get you, based on what was provided in the movie, it would seem the code was ultimately unnecessary, buuuut, since movies always allow you to unravel the story on your own, I don't see why 1000 codes couldn't have been sent out and that those that figured it out were able to be saved. Also, I know we demand thoughtful movies but virtual no movie makes 100% sense, so it's odd how emotionally invested in this you are lol

  • @endplanets

@@jasonwinney7694 I was thinking it was angels too when I first watched it, but then realized that makes 0% sense. I didn't bring it up previously because it makes no sense but..... um.... But the movie actively insults you so.... sure. Why not be be angels? Why not angel aliens? The writers are the worst, most trite, most pretentious, and most contrived dudes ever that I bet they chuckled about how cool and deep they thought they were. Being angels brings up a different set of vapid and stupid nonsense. *If you can predict the future that accurately it (kinda) negates free will. *Why bother with free will if the aliens just kidnap the kids? *Why did the angels cause the apocalypse? At least the aliens just predicted the apocalypse. *Nic didn't freely give up his kids if angels cause the apocalypse. Its no different than a kidnapping at gunpoint. At least the aliens were trying to save humans as opposed to angels who save a few after causing mega genocide. *Matthew 24:36 says that no man, angel, or Jesus will know when the apocalypse will happen. So the writers didn't read the Bible. I want to say "you can't base a movie on the Bible if you contradict the Bible" but the writers can't write so why not. *Likewise: the Bible has clear signs of the Apocalypse (seven seals, trumpets, etc) but this 'Biblically inspired' work basically insults the Bible. *Its really hard to tell if they have never read the Bible, or just didn't care. Given the script you would think both, but from what I remember the answer is neither. They put a lot of effort and time into the script and they just are THAT horrible at their one job. *Its no joke that the quickly written "This Is The End" is deeper and more well planned out. Its OK for movies to have some plot holes. In Pacific Rim the protagonists randomly whips out a sword and quadruples their power. Why not use it before? It sucks, and combat is a big focus, but its not 100% of the plot and you can ignore it and pretend the writers forgot to put a line in. But "Knowing" is 100% about the code. Literally everything revolves around it. And none of it makes any sense. And it doesn't make sense on every single level. *So its not one plot hole, its dozens of utterly crippling plot holes and they all hit you in the span of like 2 seconds for extra impact. *And its made even worse because the movie is dang good. You had a sweet 8.5/10 flick and it plummets to 0/10 in 2 seconds. I put effort into following the plot and they screwed you over by giving an ending that makes no sense. *And its made worse (AGAIN) by the fact that you can tell the writers were so proud of themselves. They think they wrote something smart and had a great twist. In DBZ when there is a plot hole the story avoids it out of shame and convenience, but here.. no. Front and center. *If anyone figured out a code they would immediately tell the media to save countless lives with The Code. Everyone in the world would know in less than 24 hours thanks to the irrefutable proof. But nobody knew about it. So nobody deciphered the code. *Totally true that we get to unravel the mystery along with Nic. But who cares if the mystery is worse than insulting. Its like watching a CSI episode to find out it was a TRex from Mars. Its worse than nothing.

Anytime a professional film critic feels the need to attack the physical appearance of an actor I immediately dismiss the entire rest of their review. That's unprofessional, unfunny, cruel, and really just kind of a jerk thing to do.

There are hideous, weird, animal-looking actors out there. They don't get called up on it because their performances are far more interesting than their looks, or incorporate how weird it is. Javier Bardem in No Country for Old Men. Part of how striking it was, was based on how freakish he looked. People like Nicholas Cage don't produce a performance interesting enough to distract from the fact they have a very straight nose. And they get paid alot for it.
