This is the first stop in my new series the best gyms in America! On today's stop we hit up the world famous Quads Gym in Chicago. This is a MUST if you are in the Chicago area. It looks small from the outside but let me tell you your mind will be blown when you start walking around. Listen to the passion in Dave's voice too. The way he treats his customers, the way he loves his gym, just what a gym and someone who runs a gym should aspire to be. I am so privileged to have been able to do this at this awesome gym.

It began as a dream shared between two childhood friends, 35 years ago, in a basement.
Dave De Young and Tom Milanovich lived that dream, opening a gym where friends could gather to lift weights, to get stronger and back then, to compete. Quads Gym evolved from Tom’s basement to a small storefront space, to the 46,000 square foot space in Calumet City, just south of Chicago, known back then as the “Land of the Giants” where true bodybuilders trained hard.
The second location opened on Chicago’s North Side in 1988, with another 40,000 square feet boasting 115 pieces of cardio, 5 complete sets of dumbbells, kettle bells, 45 pieces of Hammer Strength, and hundreds of other unique pieces from Cybex, Paramount, Nebula, Strength Inc., Elite Systems and Sports Art. All of this as well as boards, chains, farmers walk handles, a log, and a dead lift platform. Boxing, pilates and martial arts all combine to make it easy for bodybuilders to train here along with your everyday fitness enthusiast.
Gym member Greg Sorrells says, “if you’re serious about lifting, or if you want to be a power lifter in Chicago, you absolutely must come to Quads. Supportive atmosphere - everything you need to train is here. You can really get down to business, but it’s respectful,people give us our space and we give them theirs. It’s really given me a place to grow as an athlete, and Dave really likes it when we make some noise!"

Along with the world-famous Eddie Coan, who began lifting here lifting here 20 years ago, Quads members who took home trophies from the biggest contests year after year include: Pete Miller, Jeff King and the late Chuck Durr (Mr. America); Cynthia Barker (Ms. America) and Laura Crevalle (Ms. Olympia), Anthony Watkins (Teenage Mr. America), Milo Sarcev, Roland Kickinger and Chris Cormier (Mr. Olympia), and so many more - John Larrieu, Larry Bernstein and Mark Phillippi, now the Strength Coach at UNLV and winner of the Met-Rx Strong Man competitions. I’ve been working out at Quads Gym for over 17 years. I’ve worked for Dave as his night manager for 10 years! Dave’s an awesome guy, and being at this gym is like a family! It’s home away from home! I’d never thought of competing in bodybuilding, until I signed up at Quads. It was an amazing experience, for 5 years! Love this gym!! 🏋🏾♂️💪🏾❤️

John you are definitely leaving a incredible legacy. I discovered you when I was watching another fitness influencer that her and her boyfriend did with you. You let them stay in your home and I was so impressed with how genuine, kind, nice person and on top of that gave them one hell of a good workout. I was hooked to you and your videos. Rest assured you are leaving an phenomenal impact on people :)

#1:30 - I hear you John. Im 60 and the gym has always been my oasis. its the one place in your life where the effort has a direct correlation with the results.
Pray that gyms like this stays. Got Warhouse, Greg Longs, and my gym in my area. LA, Retro, and Planet is killing the hardcore gyms here!

There popping up alot in my neck of the woods. I'm in Abq New Mexico, I'm seeing a resurgence of hardcore gyms.
10:44 "we got like, 12 hamstring machines" that tells you all you need to know about the level of this gym!
Seen alot of gyms, never seen one like this. This is now on my bucket list.
That gym definitely qualifies as one of the best in the country. Thanks for giving us a look around!

Fantastic video John. The amount of equipment in there is crazy and you're 100% on Dave's passion for his gym, something very rare these days.

Man the end of that video when John said he wanted to leave a legacy, got me teary eyed. We miss you John, phenomenal gym btw. I'll have to stop in when I'm in the area.
I get up between 12am and 3am on Sunday morning to do deadlifts and it's not great getting up that early but when I get done doing them I'm happy. The gyms empty except for maybe one or two people. It's a Anytime Fitness gym I don't live anywhere near a big(real) gym. I'm 59 and want to workout until I die.
I used to go to Quads in Calumet City, I visited the North side Quads once or twice.
John definitely left a good long lasting legacy! RIP Mountain Dog! 🙏💪

Man i come from Croatia , you dont even have decent barbells here , when i see all those machines i can't even believe how many options you guys have, and its definitely a slight advantage. I hope my eyes get to see a gym like that one day here.

Great start to the series, John. I really liked the editing in how you bounced back and forth with the sit down talk and the tour. Love training at Quads when I’m in Chicago. One of my all time favorites.

Thanks to the magazine's Golds and World Gyms (and all the legends that trained there) have always had the spotlight. But there are so many other gyms that have been around just as long with just as much atmosphere, camaraderie, blood and sweat. As soon as camera started rolling you know you are seeing an old school iron pit and the twinkle in Dave De Young's eye screams the heart and soul he's put into the place. This is going to be a great series John and serve as a valuable asset to the history of the sport!

John left a legacy that’s for sure. The comment about the owner’s business partner passing at 49 is very painful now that John has passed away at the same age. I still can’t believe he is gone.

Thx John for keeping Gym life fun. At 59 I always look forward to seeing motivated positive people at the Gym.
This will be a great series, the owner is so knowledgable about the equipment. He would need to be as there are some machines there that are quite unique.
I train here every-time I visit Chicago to see family. I've been 20+ times and I still discover new, amazing equipment every session. Wall to wall old school dungeon style gym. I would kill for a local gym that was 1/4 of what Quads is.
This is a great idea for a series, can't wait to see more! I wish my gym had some history.
