The worst gym doesn’t even compare to the first gym I went to. It had dark orange lights, plaster and drywall falling all over, each room was tiny and dark, some random spots of water on the floor but it had weights. Got the job done for a whopping $10 per month, unlimited use. They gave you a key. It definitely had character.

I used to frequent A rather old YMCA in Elmhurst, IL. The free weights were in a space in the basement shared with the boiler. A bench or two, squat rack, dumbbells, leg extensions you performed with iron "shoes" that used attached to the bottom of your actual shoes. It had character.

Mine literally a size of a car garage, one equipment each (except the bench press are 3), only have the smith machine and no leg equipment. Honestly the only problem I have with it is that I cant do any barbell deadlift.

As a personal trainer at one of the top Equinox gyms in a major US city I can relate to the Chelsea Piers gym. The main reason the memberships are on the 'higher end' is because the gym is meant for people to spend the day there, and even have work areas for the nomad/remote workers. Well worth it if you can afford it and fitness is a cornerstone in your life.

I remember the first gym I went to was called Arnolds. It had a dripping ceiling, lights going out some times, but the atmosphere in there was next level. It felt like working out in some basement but it was the most testosterone filled place I’ve ever stepped foot in. They were blasting eminem and DMX all day long, I wasn’t even bringing my earphones cause the music was perfect. Everyone in there was dropping weights and shouting like mad men, the weights were also entirely made out of metal. Everyone in there was jacked af and also surprisingly nice. I was the skinniest guy in there but fkin loved it. The ecosystem in there was just pure old school and it was the most hype shit ever. It closed down like 3 years ago and I miss it soo fkin much. The best gym I’ve ever stepped foot in.

I know the "worst" gym although not that location. Since it's a franchise, the quality of the gym depends on the owner. The one in my city is the best gym I've ever been to, but then again the owner is really responsive. I actually left a five-star review once, mentioning how chill people were about sharing squat racks. He thanked me on the review, then again in person when I went to the gym, adding that they would be putting in new squat racks soon. Two weeks later, they were there. Management is everything. NYC pizza is weird. Locals like greasy and thin crust with cheese only. So that may have been the disconnect.

The only problem is if you work full time add an actual workplace it just doesn't seem plausible to pay $300 a month to work out at a gym. The planet fitness I go to I only pay $12 a month and it's actually pretty clean and they pretty much have everything you need there to build your body. I'm someone that doesn't need all that extra fancy crap since I won't be using most of it. The only thing I would rather spend a lot of money on is my car. Lmao.

The Chelsea Piers Gym is seemingly worthy of the reviews it gets, it seems to have everything most gyms don't. Here in the UK, no gym that I have been to carries a boxing ring or basket ball court. That worst gym is a cesspit and not what a gym should be. Enough said. Keep up the good work man.

Omg, that "worst" gym reminds me a lot of my local gym in Sweden! I live in a very small village and I'm lucky to even have a gym nearby at all. It's also in a basement level with no windows and fans instead of air conditioning, cracked walls, oddly yellow machines, and I often have it all to myself. Also the price is very similar. Differences is the gym in my village is much smaller, and there's barely any space to walk or do standing dumbbell exercises, or heck even to warm up, between the racks and machines. Also... the men's locker room only has two showers very close to each other. So if you're not alone in there, it gets kinda awkward. It's not a bad gym, imo. It has everything I need, which isn't much.

Chelsea Piers gym is awesome; it's just hard to get to for most people in NYC. I used to live in Gramercy and rode the cross-town bus on 23rd to get there. Door-to-door was a good 30 minutes each way. So, while it pained me to cancel Chelsea Piers, I ended up going to Equinox, which was across the street from my apartment. For an everyday gym, I think a convenient location is more important than the quality of the gym.
