The only thing missing from this timeline is how Johan lived with Margot Langer around the time he was 18. This is a major plot point considering how much information he obtained about Mr. Schuwald. Soon after she was killed as well to erase any trace of him same like with the the middle aged couples.

I had completely forgotten about that! Interesting that the wiki doesn't clarify that it was Johan. I think the most unnerving thing about Johan is his ability to disappear without a trace whenever he wants, hence why a video like this is even needed in the first place.

One point everyone always misses is that Johan was deprived of an identity since birth. His mom dressed him and made him pass as Anna since he was born. That was for protection so Klaus couldn't find them since everyone thought that his mom only had 1 child so erasing the trace of having twins. That's why Johan says that he is anma and anna is him.

Or, since a twin is literally an embryo split in two, could it be he thought that justified him taking her memories as his own? Like she is an extension of him. His "other half".

The only person he didnt saw it in was dr tenma, thats why he really pushed tenma to his limit by pointing the gun at the children to make him realise that he also possesses that monster... But tenma didn't shoot. because he really believed in him and despised that monster. That monster is the thought of "all lives aren't equal"

As sociopathic as Johan was, you could tell that many of his mental hang ups stemmed from the lifelong belief that his mother had never loved him. He possibly perceived this from the internalization of his sister’s memories as well as his mother’s abandonment of him later. You could see in the scene where he tells a young boy that his mother never wanted him and didn’t love him that he was actually speaking to himself, displacing his own feeling of abandonment and hurt onto another. Thought that was great and subtle dialogue. Additionally, the murders of middle-aged couples could have been a sort of symbolic matricide and patricide. They were arguably the most targeted of all the murders Johan committed, suggesting a more personal motive.

sociopath or psychopath? kinda carries traits of both - yes he has attachments to certain people (but more like obsessions with Tenma and Anna) and he is manipulative but that's also part of the textbook phsycopath. Nothing about him is reckless like a sociopath as well, no guilt or empathy whatsoever.

The story feels so different told this way. From Tenma's point of view, there are very small pieces of information and all of them are hard-earned or out of order, he doesn't have a clear picture of it all until the very end. The story told in the way of this video is more clean and digestable, as if you were giving a lecture of Monster. Great job.

Many people are disappointed with the way monster ended, for me there is no better way for monster to ended. Most people disappointed because until the end there is no solid conclusion or undeniable truth, but the way I see it the author want to asking viewer about their own morality and how people decide truth in complicated dilemma.

I think it was the same as the college student that committed suicide, Johan has a way of really getting in peoples heads. But I dont understand why, we never understood why Johan is so good at manipulation, deceiving, why hes so cunning. Was he just born like that, I really wish we could've known.

Easily one of the greatest stories ever written. If there was one live action adaptation I’d want for an anime, it would be this one. Be massive here in the states.

I don't think a movie would be able to properly tell the story though, so it would have to be a series. But manga/anime adapted to live-action films are rarely ever good (if ever?), so I wouldn't really want that to be honest. You have no idea how many times I've tried to pitch people Death Note, and then they respond saying they've seen the god awful Netflix movie.

Fair points Martin. I don't think I'd be able to handle a US centric interpretation where Johan is played by Willem Dafoe. If it was done well, I could see it working but you're right, past live action animes have been a bit garbage. Why they decide to live action series with supernatural elements rather than realistic ones like Monster I'll never know

The scariest part of this whole thing is simply Johan wasn't even there at the Red Rose Mansion, so he he didn't experience what Anna did. He wasn't locked in a room and psychological tortured , all that happened is he was told the story by the person that WAS there and either hearing it transformed his perception of reality or he was already jaded to become who is ultimately became from birth and the story just accelerated it. Nature vs Nurture or even something in-between idk but I can say without a doubt that Johan was indeed a Monster but so were the institutions that manipulated his family that led to him becoming one in the first place. I will add tho on a side note im kinda annoyed you didn't do "another monster" that would have been interesting to discuss sense there not many people who even touched on it.

the thing is johan was part of the experiments of the red rose mansion the same as anna, he just wasn't part of the last one. Also he was forced to dress and act like her sister, and didn't have a name, he was despersonilized, all that can count as torture and have psychological repercutions. he was empty and like the demon in the klaus's children book that he used to read them, he took the story of her sister as his own. i believe he killed the first couple they encounter after scaping of a way to protect anna, because he did it after he heard them say they were going to call the police, the same with the family who adopted them he killed them after they brought in klaus. so i think he had two personas, one who want it to protect anna after what she told him and the other one who was fucked up and absorved her story as his own and make him the monster he is.

Plus it should be noted that after Nina/Anna returned to Three Frogs, the twin's mom had long been gone and Johan was standing in an empty apartment at too young an age to be left alone. After already developing his issues with his Mom alternating on which twin to give up, Johan being isolated after everyone was gone kinda puts him in a similar situation to what Nina/Anna went through at the Red Rose Mansion. It's kinda like Bonaparte's experiment happened with Johan a lot more than it did with Nina/Anna, it just happened unsupervised (though just a theory). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Actually, I believe that Johan started to break listening to her sister talk about it and because of the doubt of his mother. But I believe that in Kinderheim 511, he started to lose his memories, but he thought about his sister constantly, and at some point he started to remember those memories as they were his. Like Grimmer remembered Adolf's memories instead of his, Johan remembered Nina's memories, and that was the turning point to become the Monster After remembering everything and knowing that Bonaparta was the reason he was wicked, he became even more wicked, but more humane

Imagine making another 74 episodes my god idk how they made it and actually ENDED IT. whereas most other anime have a season of 12 or 24 episodes and never end it propperly or just make it into 1 arc where the manga is 50 arcs long.

I had just finished this series last night after watching it back to back for a week straight. Pretty good anime. It's just one of those animes where I'm pretty sure 60% of the community hasn't glanced at but needs to check out.

100% Monster has always been one of my top recommendations. Definitely deserving a bigger reader/viewership

I love how the series is set right at that timeline and sprcially in Germany, and that it ends up involving health officials doing really bad things to children and creating monsters because of it, because if you look up the stuff some German psychiatrists did with children in the past WW2 world, suddenly Monster seems a whole lot more believable. People that think evil German doctors was only a thing during Nazi Germany, you got a hell of a surprise waiting for you if you research it.

Really great video. I am a bit unsure about "As Anna tells the tale of what happened to her, Johan internalizes the memories and believes that he himself was the one that was sent to the mansion and witnessed the mass murder, with Anna waiting for him to return," though. My impression is that Johan's confusion on that point came later. When we hear the tape of Johan at Kinderheim, he says that what he's most afraid of is forgetting Anna. "Because of these strange experiments done on me every day, my memories are disappearing. Please, don't let me forget Anna. In this whole world, there's only Anna and me. Please, just this one memory. Please..." One of my favorite interpretations of Johan's thought processes is that he used the story of The Nameless Monster as a sort of mnemonic device as he was losing his memories in Kinderheim, with different story elements corresponding to different events and people in his life. How he reconstructed it evolves during the story, as he rediscovers events from his past, but the basic framework of story elements (fairy tale country, monster consisting of two halves, monster going into the village and eating people, monster that doesn't find a name, monster eating people in the castle, one person eating the other, existing in a world without no one to call them by their name, etc.) that correspond to settings, characters, and events in Johan's life is consistent. In conversation Schuwald I think we get the first glimpse of this, when he describes a fairy tale country where he and Anna were living, hand in hand, the only two people in the world, with so many dead people. The fairy tale country is Prague or East Germany; the castle where so many people were dead was Kinderheim or the Red Rose Mansion; the monster eating people at the castle was Bonaparta poisoning people or Johan manipulating the massacre at Kinderheim; the monster that went into town and ate people was either the monster inside of Johan (so to speak) or Bonaparta; the monster that didn't find a name was either Anna (mom) or Anna (sister); the monster eating his other half is either what Bonapart will do to Anna (mother) or Johan will do to Anna (sister) depending on the version. I don't think any of this is stated explicitly, but can be inferred from Johan's initial reaction to The Nameless Monster in the library, his conversations with Blue Sophie, Schuwald, and Capek, the partial Kinderheim 511 tape, and his reactions to Nina's revelation. In conversation with Blue Sophie after encountering The Nameless Monster again, he says, "I thought I had seen the darkest place. But beyond that, I have found an even deeper darkness." Much later, in conversation with Capek, he says, "The monster I thought was inside me wasn't inside. It was outside." Capek asks, "What are you trying to say?" Johan: "Isn't Franz Bonaparta alive?" I'm also sort of partial to the idea that Johan's sense of identity as a child was fragile and that his sense of himself as an individual distinct from Anna was weak, given that they both had no names and that they were both playing the same role in public as their mother's single daughter, and they were twins besides. And given how easy it is to implant memories in ordinary, psychologically well-adjusted adults (or to do it to yourself), it probably isn't surprising if Johan experienced the telling of the event as having actually experienced the event first-hand even if intellectually he knew it happened to his sister. Later, when he was trying to hold onto his memories and keep things straight, he misremembered this event as his own experience

That is a beautiful layout of Johan, Mumei! I think "The Nameless Monster" is one of the most compelling elements in this series. Being able to craft a story that not only summarises the antagonist's journey without throwing it in your face while also making it genuinely creepy on its own is just masterful. I really like what Urasawa was able to do in this series. And yes, I would agree that there is some ambiguity around when Johan takes over the memories of the Red Rose. I've always thought it happened straight away which is the first major reason why he kills all his first foster families before Kinderheim. Though like so much of this series, that might just be my interpretation rather than fact! The more I look at this series, I come to that same conclusion that Johan quoted above. "Isn't Franz Bonaparta alive?" After everything's said and done. He will go down as the ultimate monster of this series for me. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, that was a great read!

Johan is amazing character, scariest villain(?) so far because he feels so real

Johan was likely ( very definitely actually) abused a lot during the three years he was at 511 kinderheim. I think this is why he rerecorded that tape. He doesn't want anyone to know him.

If the events of Monster was real, Johan would be in his forties today. If so, is he still pursuing criminal activities? Or did the "monster" inside him finally die after Tenma saved his life a second time? He would obviously change his identity again and probably abandon the name "Johan", but if he did decide to change, maybe he didn't kill anybody this time to be more thorough in starting a new life. I dunno, I just think it's interesting to think what Johan might be up to right now. What do you guys think?

Tenma killed Johan’s Monster by saving him again. So, no - he lives a normal life now and doesn’t kill anymore.

I found this theory in the internet: Monster wasnt johan, it was the belief that some lives more valueble than others. When johan said " I saw the monster that day" he was talking about his mother, because his mother chose one of her kids to another. Johan thought everyone was a "monster" and he wanted to prove that. Thats why he wanted anna to kill pecek. Also tenma was thinking all lives values equally. So on ep 73 he aimed the child. He thought tenma was gonna choose wims life and kill him. But he was wrong because tenma saved his life. So johan got "defeated" in some kind a way and stopped killing people

Fantastic video! I actually just finished my rewatch of the series today, the intensity and beauty of this series truly never misses. Although, I'd highly recommend revisiting this series with the Dub! An absolute powerhouse cast was used for the dub, and the performances were top-notch especially from the main characters. Liam O'brien as Tenma, Karen Strassman as Nina, and Tara Platt as Eva were exceptional performances - as well as many others!

Greatly made video , excellent work! I want to add that yes, Tenma imagined Johan speaking to him in the last scene and that he definitely escaped - the earlier closed window is now opened(shown by the wind) , as well as the signs that someone was in the bed just recently.

Thanks for putting up a timeline. As much as I watch the anime, I always find it hard to keep track of the progression of time in the anime, ESPECIALLY after the events that happened after the town massacre.

@@SeaGee To be honest, I didn't know that the events of Monster ended in 1999. I thought for sure that the ending would take place in the early 2000s. Maybe somewhere around 2000-2002.

@Shawn Hawk2102 Yeah, I didn't even think about the years before doing the timeline. It's actually the sequel book, Another Monster, that occurs in that 2000-2002 year range. A really good read if you haven't checked it out.

Heyoo, what an amazing video! This is what I call quality content haha I love this cause I'm probably not the only one that even after reading thru "Monster" and re-reading some parts, still can't fully connect all of the events cause it's super complicated in a good way of course. Also, thanks, I couldn't convince my friend that Richard didn't drink the whiskey, I had all the fate in him and I knew he wouldent let me down. Btw I've started reading Vagabond, I have high hopes for this manga.

I just finished this whole show yesterday after spending a whole week of watching it non stop. And i was still so confused with certain plot points so this was really really helpful thank u so much!! Watching the entire video has made me clear my doubts and appreciate the show more. Honestly this is the first time i watched a psychological thriller anime but hearing that people say it’s a good show and to give it a shot, i did. And boyyyy was it worth it!! Now Johan is one of my favourite anime characters out there, and I’ve watched alot of other animes. This man is just something else. I’m one of those who loves the ending and that last scene with Johan was so scary i actually freaked out and almost screamed. I’m recommending this show to people for sure. It deserves to be talked about more!

watching this anime I learned a bit about the history of post WW2 Germany. both my mum and dad lived in West Germany during their childhood, obviously while it was still divided by the Berlin wall. the stark difference between East and West Germany is crazy to me.

Honeslty your german is actually some of the best german I have heared from an english speaker.

This was useful, because I got a little distracted between the fire at the library and the events in Ruhenhilm, which also has a lot of flashbacks.

I discovered the manga about a year ago and I kid you not I binged it in a whole damn day , I could not put it down!! Paired it up with reading it to some ambient music and then the Ronette’s be my baby when the part came up just really made it a good experience! My eyes were as closed as Wolfgang Grimmers to some points lmao but after watching this video you opened them up to seeing certain things more lmao. This video was super concise , clear and digestible! Also your voice is mighty cute dude, great work~

Saw this anime on SCI-FY in 2008 just 15 min of an episode was when Tenma was in the library. Watched this anime in 2012 or 2013 was amazing.

Did Johan end up having another personality? Because I understand the series starts telling is he does have two personalities, being one himself (the original kid he used to be before Bonaparta got involved his life) and the other one the monster, created inside Anna and taken by Johan, made by Bonaparta. But reaching the end of the story, Johan seems to be just one single and totally convinced of what he is man. So... Did he end up having two personalities? I personally interpret that the monster ended up consuming Johan's original personality, being 100% the experiment of Bonaparta.

When he read the copy of the monster book. I was convinced that he had a split personality disorder and he used the book as his sort of escapism during the experiment when he was a kid.

watched this anime 5 years ago, I need to watch it again

Urasawa is a pro when it comes to characters. Just a single chapter is need it to emphatize with a minor one. I don't know if you've read 20th Century Boys, but it has MANY awesome characters, I'll say even more lovable than here.

100%! Urasawa has a really great way of creating characters, even the minor ones, with a clear purpose behind them (like the bird watcher in the garden, or the restaurant owner from Nina's job.) I'd like to go through 20th Century Boys again soon. I've read through a few times but definitely due for a re-read.

With Monster, I didn't feel satisfied with how some characters end and the worst part is Eva, how I hated that woman and the mangaka's attempt to make me fell sorry for her: didn't work.

Thanks! In short, Another Monster doesn't add much besides some extra context so not required reading for the main series. I'm tossing up if there's enough for a video on. I've been reading the txt version on archive.org. Not the best way to read it but the text is all there !

This series is such a great writing!!!

Johan thought he was anna and he thought anna was him, deprived of identity, he thought he was sister, thus why he thinks he went through that trauma that Anna went through, when he didn’t, he took it upon himself to react to it, to fix it, living a life of blood shed, to erase the things he deemed inconvenient for him, and if something is inconvenient to him, by his logic, it’s inconvenient to anna, because he thinks he’s anna, he thinks they’re the same person split into 2 bodies. So he wanted forgiveness, he thought if he can remove everything that made Anna traumatised, she would live happily knowing he’s gone. But that’s what HE wanted, what HE thought was right, because after all. He and anna are the same person to him, so if he thought something was right, why wouldn’t anna? If he wanted to die due to how horrid his actions were, wouldn’t anna want him dead too? I think Johan could have avoided a lot if he had simple communication.

Just finished this masterpiece and it’s giving me a Crime and Punishment vibe though I’m only at the 4th chapter. The aura kinda felt the same but my opinion can still change since I’m only at the beginning of the book. 😆

I thought Tenma imagined, that Johan was awake. woooow makes so much sense now

I read Monster about a year ago and I actually remember most of the names or at least know who it was when I hear the name. Also I love all the German in the Anime. The newspapers and stuff feel so authentic. One of the rare cases where being native German speaker is a real advantage

One of my favorite classic animes, but I still feel like the ending really lost me. I understand the morality and intent was going for something more complex than, "Good guy kill bad guy," but the fact that Tenma thought himself moral because he would rather watch Johan murder children in front of him than ever actually pull the trigger himself, was straight up baffling to me.

It is never extolled that Tenma's inaction was the right thing to do, nor does the series deliver a verdict on the moral debate. Precisely the conclusion is that someone interrupts the scene and lets the viewer debate this. The irony of the scene goes beyond a tertiary character killing the antagonist, it is the action of killing someone; to Johan, in response to protecting his son in an act of paternal love, which are basically the opposite reasons why Johan wanted to die, a different person and a different motive. At the end of it all, Tenma saves Johan for different reasons than at the beginning, precisely so that the guy doesn't go to jail for murder.

I guess that after no character ever really called out Tenma on his potential hypocrisy, and because the child didn't actually die as a result of his inaction, I felt that the author simply wanted to have their cake and eat it too. Letting Tenma keep his rigid moral stance, but refusing to actually have him face the brutal consequences of it. And yeah, I still think it's a bit convenient that a third party interrupted the ultimatum at the last second, and denied him the outcome of that final choice. But I agree that it's interesting to note that Tenma was actually helping the shooter that saved his son, and not just Johan by choosing to operate on him again. And I suppose that the tone of the final conversation (and ambiguity of whether or not Johan simply escaped again) isn't set in stone in regards to the answer of Johan's question, or whether or not Tenma actually did the right thing. Maybe Johan killed himself in the end, or maybe Tenma just started the cycle of murder all over again.

@@YorkJonhson Of course it's convenient, Urasawa clearly didn't want Johan to have the satisfaction of being killed by Tenma; even if it was in defense of a child, and he had him killed for a tertiary and for other reasons lol I think the ending can easily be interpreted as the conclusion of Johan and his dualism with the nameless monster. -The nameless monster by its nature has no name -Johan listens to Tenma say that he had a name. -The nameless monster disappeared when he realized he had one; symbolically, of course. It's a very simplified way of looking at it, but I think it goes something like this.

Seeing Johan in a Danganropa artstyle is very surreal.

A little wrong, Johan waking up in the epilogue was all in tenmas head and was not real. However he was probably conscious while tenma was talking to him.

I think Johan blamed himself when he listened Anna's story in three frogs,decide to kill every one because he lost faith in humanity. He doubted his mother also,if she wanted to save johan why he make look like her sister- that's Johan words. In the end i think he manipulated dr tenma and believed him he was asleep and decide to live with his original name X. Iike aot ending when everyone lives happily after erens death, I can't imagine that but that s my thoughts
