Another Monster: The Sequel Novel

Ойын-сауық

Another Monster is the sequel novel to Monster, the original manga / anime by Naoki Urasawa.
From the perspective of Werner Weber, an investigative journalist, we discover clues about this new Monster and uncover new perspectives on the original series. Today we're going to pick out some of the choice cuts of new information and then look at some of the larger issues this book picks up with. These are around Bonaparta and this "Other Monster."
This book is good! It's definitely worth a read if you're a Monster fan and there's honestly so much more in there that I don't cover in this video. If you have the time, I highly recommend giving it a read.

This put Johan below Franz Bonaparta since Johan learned from him but he invented all this. He destroyed healthy mind while turning others into monster meanwhile Johan preyed on disturbed mind to act out his plan. Bonaparta was doing bigger than Johan; He was the monster that take the name away. Johan was just a nameless monster. He only defeated Bonaparta using his tactics while he was old and reformed.

But then, when Boneparta wrote a love letter to her, in the end it said, "You may have your name back. I return your name to you. Your name is Anna…" Wasn't Anna her sister's name? Was she really living two lives cuz it'll make more sense. And if she was also the victim and didn't get the letter ergo still doesn't know her own name, it's also possible that she will forget the twins names... ughh I'm losing my mind!

The first and littearly ONLY video on KZread that had the fucking balls to tackle this topic and extremely well at that! Excellent summary of each critical point in the story, the historical back drop of post WW2 East Germany and Communism's gradual decline were a nice touch using real life pictures and footage. It's been almost a decade sense I read a fan translation of this story and I feel there were many parts I glossed over but with this video I think I understand a little bit more what it was trying to say. The be all end all was NOT Johan, it was this complex series of events started by dangerous and emotionally unstable people that took advantage of a fragile political and institutional structure, sacrificing many both innocent and guilty along the way to protect themselves and out of vindictive spite. I have a new found appreciation for Urasawa's writing and what he focuses on, I haven't read 20th Century Boys yet because I keep hear its "THE GREATEST MANGA EVER CREATED" but theres so few analysis videos on it im questioning the authenticity of that statement, I love your videos so hopefully one day you can do that one as well.

I'm a bit surprised you didn't mention the final sketch left behind in Weber's room, the one that looks suspiciously similar to Johan... Who drew this picture, and why? Was it Fuhr, the picture book artist, trying to describe his foggy memory of the young man he'd glimpsed burning down the Red Rose Mansion? Or was it Weber, the journalist and former street artist, trying to hurriedly copy down the face of the culprit behind his subsequent disappearance? It's obvious that the picture was left behind for a reason, but what kind of message was it intended to convey? I think that, in the same way Bonaparta's experiments continue to live on, Johan's "work" will continue on as well. Whether it's only a symbolic "inheritance" or perhaps it's actually Johan himself (iirc, it's only the public version of the story which says that Johan remains in a comatose state)... who knows? The beauty of Urasawa's writing lies in the manner of which he refuses to spoonfood his audience, instead allowing them to draw their own final conclusions.

Even in the book says no one knows if Johan's still sleeping, if he died or if he scaped. Some fans think Johan scaped and looked for his mother to kill her, cause she doesn't appear in the book, so Tenma and Nina. Some say the ending is like the beginning, Tenma talking to an unconcious Johan and him waking up to kill someone. By the way it's pretty interesting the journalist has Nina's address so he knows where she lives, and it would be more curious if he knew her e-mail address.

To be honest I read through the book twice. Once in full and then a second quick skim through. The first time I thought: great, Johan's left ambiguous. The second time: wait he actually is in a coma? I normally would hate it not being clear but I think that's the whole point around this series and Urasawa doesn't let up. And yeah Moonlight, there's so much in this book I definitely left out some pretty interesting cuts. Thanks for adding that in here!

@@ladygrinningsoul357 I think all these speculations about what happened to Johan, it's clearly Urasawa saying that the people in the story are "in the dark" as much as we, the public. In fact, many of these speculations are the same that some had when they finished seeing Monster. It is also part of the "fame" of famous serial killers. Johan in the story has practically become an urban legend and inspiration for many other criminals.

Everyone dies in eclipse who actually knew him and even his most important person in his life but he still survive in the end and fighting with everything. Fighting with his own dark desires, pain and fear even though it didn't lead anything. Even though revenge is one of his wrong decision but it truly show his strength that he has the will to take revenge even though it didn't give him back his identity. Just this fact that he tries to understand other's pain through his empathetic nature to find some meaning or his belonging in the world even though he ignores this fact because of his useless revenge and tries to reach his goal through it saves him every time. He always fighting with his darkness to find his place in world which can only he can handle and give shape to it in right way by literally going more deeper in it which can create some meaningful change in the world. Guts never forget his own identity and what he truly desire from himself at least unconsciously. What i mean by previous statement that people try to comprehend their identity from the perspective of others by not by himself. A good example is wolf how he is destroyed and fall into despair by loss of meaning in world and what he should do because he think this meaning can only be derived by others but it is not true. Guts teaches us that even though you lost your place and identity from world. You should know yourself that your identity is and what do you truly wanted to do with it and use your whole strength to create a meaningful change in the world with role in the world or worth of you in the world. Guts do this from the start of the series unconsciously but slowly started to integrate in his consciousness when he find his new meaningful place in his new group. He continuously encounter his mistakes and things which he hate from himself but never consume by it and finally try to become what he is.

Nice parallels Hermit! It's interesting how these series can take two very different approaches to show how people grapple with identity and despair. It makes me think about the Berserker Armor which initially takes away Guts' sense of self to heat of battle. It's a literal embodiment of losing himself to his revenge. Heck, Berserk is such a good series

@@SeaGee yeah thank you for replying and video is really well made and give me new insights about monster. I said that it could be flattery in previous comment because i didn't mean to say that berserk is the only series which do that. Possibly my other two favourite series vagabond and Gunnm (Alita battle angle) also do that but in different ways. In these two series, main character did struggle to find their whole self or identity but it is not like guts which lost his identity but still survive. In gunnm, main character did lost his identity but then she started from scratch to find or create his new self by integrating her previous one. That's why i think berserk does this more efficiently

In the last chapter when herman furr or the person on phone says he is next to the room of his, I think it was johan because johan in monster last episode disappears from hospital which says he isn't in comatose and there was also a hastenly drawing of johan because he was the one who came , werner don't know how johan was look alike because case was not disclosed in public so how johan looks like was also not known by rest of world. So this may be a clue that. Johan is now out of comatose and also the hermann furr or fritz weindler. But maybe there can also be like this another monster is just another personality of johan who want to live in peace. Or johan and furr are really two monster Because as stated into book, that when hermann again goes to the red rose mansion, it was in flame and a monster was coming out from the flames.

But the part with the experiments mentioned to start again, with the possibility of a lot of different kinds of "Johans" (or just Johan-like people) coming out of the woodwork to spread psychological destruction?! The Monster universe could barely handle one Johan! 0_o

With Bonaparta, Chapek, and co dead, why would it keep going? But now we learn that yep the scale was much bigger and stretches into governments and nation's still reaching for more power. Definitely a scary way to wrap up the series.

Just started Monster yesterday. Half way through it now and man, is it good, glad this video is out, I was already looking for a possible season 2. I hope this gets animated or a sequel is made from a different side of the world. Favourite character as of now is Mr. Runge. Although I dislike his decision or rather, his persistence on blaming Tenma as the killer. Mr. Runge is just a savage, mans had his daughter pregnant and wife had a lover, both were leaving and he’s just like “aight bet, we’ll talk when Im back”. Also, the one time were he exposed the reporter/journalist, made him fold haha. He’s whole gimmick is just like crazy good and interesting as a character. Not perfect just enough to make him human and not some android. As of episode 25 (ik I said half but it’s close enough) Monster is a solid 8.9 or 9.2/10 It gives me those King Game vibes while staying realistic and the whole mystery plot just makes it it’s own thing. Johan is also a compelling villain too, even when he’s not on scene or being talked about everything seems to drive towards his presence making him feel so powerful and inhuman just like the title, a “Monster”.

Haha, he’ll start elaborating on how Tenma was just obsessed with the kid he saved that ended up on the Majors death and blah blah blah “it lived in his head, that guilt” or something you know? Haha. This whole video is brilliant from start to finish, but I disagree with Führ being the instigator of the Zweifelstadt massacre. Both Mustafa and Kiener describe him as a man in his forties, meaning he must have been born around the same time as Weber and Grimmer - the 1950s - and is too young to have been the graduate student. I personally think it was Bonaparta testing out his technique on a larger scale.

Sure Kamna! So there's a lot of ambiguity around Johan's end. Some people have interpreted that last chapter of Monster as Johan never escaped. The empty bed explained by him being moved somewhere more secure or managed for long term coma patients. That, of course, agrees with the "official reports" from Another Monster. Others say that he did escape and the coma story is all some nonsense to not let the public know a serial murderer escaped. Personally from how I piece it all together, I'm more inclined to believe the coma story since the whole thing really became to high-profile to cover up. One of the things I love about this series is that my interpretation of the ending is always changing so heck who knows what actually happened.

Okay so- I read this explanation somewhere which made the most sense so imma just put it here... The final scene in the show after Johan reveals this to us is Tenma snapping out of it, and discovering Johan is asleep before he leaves the room. The next shot is an empty bed next to an open window… Johan’s bed. Was he ever there in the first place? Did he get away? Did he jump out the window and commit suicide? Did he kill more? Johan actually goes on from here to live a healthy, happy, fulfilling life without killing. Why? Because his reverse rooftop game gave him the answer, he was chosen by fate. The only reason he wanted to die was to find a reason to live, and by surviving this perfect suicide, he knows there’s a reason out there. All of this… was realized in a single masterful ending that took up around 4 minutes, and it was the perfect ending to an excellent story.

Yeah I really wish that would've been left alone. I love all the extra details in the book but giving a "canon" ending to the original was certainly not for me either

I haven’t read Another Monster but was it actually canon? If not then I don’t think it should matter too much, I’d say you can still interpret what you want from the original imo

Will there be a second season to the anime?

I think it's unlikely. There's some cool stuff in here but probably not enough to create an entire sequel season. Plus since it's just a novel it would be that much harder to adapt

To my understanding there's Japanese and Spanish versions you can get off Amazon. There's an unofficial english fan translation floating about too. I found a copy up on Archive org. There's also an email of the translator on the wiki which I've heard some people have got a copy from directly. Hopefully that helps

Thankfully there's actually not too much out there besides the sequel novel. The Awakening Monster story is part of Another Monster, you'll find it in there. I just split it into another video because I think it's pretty important on it's own. I honestly would love to see those children's books get published on their own. I feel like owning a copy of the nameless monster would be fun. The problem I find with these stories (especially Billy Bat!) Is that a lot of what's available isn't in English. Or at least officially in English. As helpful as fan-scans are, I just really want them to publish some official English copies. I'm working on a big 20th Century Boys video atm so if people seem to get behind that I'll probably do something similar for Monster. Bring together all of the bits and pieces around the story into one big video. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Glad I could bring Another Monster to your attention

I'd love to see this animated. I reckon it'd be a tough one to adapt though. It splits between getting more details on the original story and the new story with Hermann Fuhr. Plus its just criminally underread so might be missing the fan support

as a Czech speaker born and raised in the Czech republic you sure did butcher those names of Czech historical figures and some of the German too but all is forgiven because that stuff is nigh impossible to pronounce to anyone that hasn't lived most of his life here very good video keep up the good work man i needed something like this to eat up some of the world building details thanks man. sidenote when watching the original monster i actually though the picture book "Obluda, která nemá jméno" was real i was very disappointed when i found out it is in fact fictional monster really did this stuff right. the czech in that show is good (aside from how it is spoken but the grammar is good and the sentences make sense) i love it.

Hey I have two questions Hope you can answerr me I am not getting any answers to these questions 1)why did johan isolated hans George schubertt Was there a specific reasons?

  • @SeaGee

    @SeaGee

    3 жыл бұрын

Heya, I'll do my best: 1) The isolation was all part of Johan's original plan. We don't get too many details but presumably he wanted to gain all of Schuwald's wealth and power. He was already close to getting this even after Karl showed up. I think he was trying to gain power alongside Christof for whatever reason. 2) I think it has to do with showing Tenma "the landscape of the end." It seems like one of those things that can best be experienced in a desperate situation (like Schuwald in the burning library.) Though, I too don't really fully get Johan's plan behind Ruhenheim.
