I have seen so many projects made from pallet wood from rocking horses to saw horses, and this is by far the most beautiful piece of them all. I am sure your girlfriend will love it and cherish it for the rest of her life. It isn't often that someone gives you a gift that they made by hand, but when they do, the person receiving it knows that it is special because you took the time to produce a one of a kind gift that no one else has. Good for you sir, thank you for the inspiration.

meranti are common where we are. you’re absolutely right about it getting fluffy after sanding. Wiping it with a damp cloth after the first sanding helps to bring the fluff up, but it’ll smoothen nicely after the subsequent sanding

Nice job Keith. Also nice to hear someone on KZread say that the finish applied came down to "it's all I've got at the moment..." Always dubious of the "I had this gold bar laying around the shop so I thought I'd make a ......."-brigade.

Keith, for all us average guys who try to make something nice using the wood to hand which is often pallet wood or recycled timber you are an inspiration. The box is beautiful and from all the projects you have made your home must look super. A box like that turns a girlfriend into a fiancee !. As always a big thumbs up.

Brilliant work Keith.. I’ve cut up loads of pallets for projects and do like to see the look on peoples face when i point to a pallet and say that’s what it used to be… Pallets are made up of some timers I couldn’t guess to name but come up beautiful when a finish is applied.

I know this is an old comment but years ago I worked for a export company that dealt with some dollar stores in the US like dollar tree. We would get pallets made from purple heart, sapele, blood wood, black walnut and a few others. I still have several pallets of sapele and blood wood from there. I wish I could go just to get their pallets but they won't let me now that I don't work there lol

young Meranti is soft, old tress are hard, used for doorframes in the old days, Today the trees are young and therfor soft and hairy(fluffy) close to tree limbs areas. making sanding or planing a pain the (hmm) the lid loos really nice , you can do a cross as well (i know work work work )

For your information, my stepdaughter's husband is a carpenter, and, he takes his planer/thicknesser knives into the local college to be sharpened. Regards, Wayne.

Great job im sure your girlfriend will love it. We have a lot of Meranti here in Australia often used in building for skirting boards architraves and around windows we it comes from SE Asia. Although its classed as a hard wood here (so is Balsa wood) it is soft and can go furry when it is worked. I think that hardwood and softwood classifications are more based on how the tree rows and grain structure.

You make the whole thing look so easy and I know it's all about practice but right now I really do envy someone who can turn out such a lovely piece of work. do you do courses? If not you should - If you do please let me know. Thanks; really enjoyed this and will be giving it a go but in the absence of a thicknesser I'll be using some already prepared timber.
