That is the sturdiest chop saw I've ever seen. Looks rock solid.

Makes you realise how good Paul Sellers is as he makes it look so effortless but with practice u'll be smashing out dovetails like a pro... great stuff as always dude :)

Your first attempt at dovetails was 20 times better than mine, good work. Love they’re cycling aspect of this project.

I think they came out well. You will get better the more you make them. Looking forward to parts 2&3.

I think you did a brilliant job! Especially for no experience! My husband paid a local woodworker to rip my block of rosewood into boards so now I can attempt the same thing! I can only hope to be half as good as yours, haha. And yes I've watched Paul Sellers video on dovetails about a dozen times! Great job!

You should be proud of them as a new comer to hand cut dove tails they look good, next project a chest of drawers

if your wandering why youve still got a gap under your tails its because when you did your pins you did a knife line which was good but you took of to much material in one go and you push the chisel back when you hammered it through and it compressed the grain back behind the line. Thats why a coping saw is great you leave a 2 mm waste at the base of the tails and you shave the rest off flipping the wood from face to back and slopping the chisel to the middle as you dont need it to be flat. hope this helps, great first attempt though.

To have watched the video just up to the point where you made your first attempt at dovetail joints, (successfully I might add), was in itself reason enough for me to subscribe. All things and anything about mahogany are currently of great interest to me. About a week ago here where I live a very large West Indies Mahogany tree was harvested. The cut branches and gigantic sections of the trunk were stacked up high in a parking lot and anyone interested was welcome to come by and help themselves to as much as they wanted. I got my hands on a few small pieces but waited one day too long to return and collect any more, because it was all gone when I did. Having heard you mention how rare it is to come across Mahogany over where you live, I wish there were some way I could share with you the photos I took of that massive pile of beautiful wood.

Great job. As you were cleaning up with the chisel I noticed you were you were going beyond your pencil lines. The one that was bad, I saw it happen. One must watch the lines as one makes the cuts. You were much better than my first Dovetails. Thanks for sharing your talents.

Nice work Keith. I admire the fact that you share when things don't go completely to plan. The joints still look great in my opinion and who cares about a bit of filler. I bet your pencils are a lot shorter with that little gizmo! 😉 Also not sure why anyone would dislike this video. They didn't say why though.... cowards!

top job dude ! I tried hand cut dovetails about a year ago after being inspired by P. S., they looked a holy show...not tried since. This has re fired my ambition. cheers man

Yeah, first time I tried hand cut dovetails I had similar experience. Hours of work and still had to do the old sawdust and glue fix the gaps. Declared right then and there that if ever I need to do dovetails again I'm buying the jig and router bit for it.

Best way I find to fill small gaps is super glue the gaps and with random orbital sander with really high grit pad for fine dust gets in the holes and always a perfect colour match

Very cool :) I was recommended to get a marking knife vs pencil to do the initial marks, as it lets you mark closer and narrower than the pencil. I will be trying some of your suggestions for the rest of it though, again very cool video.

U did a good job, I find it easy putting scrap wood behind the pieces when chiselling so I don't get the wood splitting mate I find it easier that way mate to be honest, great video once again bud

Looks great for a first time doing dovetails. I expect the softwood was probably more difficult to work with than the mahogany, as it tends to squash more easily and won't leave such a nice edge.

Nice work mate. I really like that you didn't score the width of the boards with the marking knife, leaving an ugly line in the finished product... I hate that. :)

Look very good for first attempt to me. It's worth next time making your lengths of timber about 5mm longer and marking you positions then you have a 5mm tolerance to finely tune in them joints. Marking knife is good practise but with a Stanley knife you need to remember it cuts and can angle behind where your square is. If that make any sense ??? But that's just some advice to make perfect ones :)

Don't worry about gaps.. Some upv glue and the sawdust from the cuts rubbed into the gaps and the gaps disappear

I'd say that's a good attempt at dovetails, also... Mahogany is a very hard wood to make clean dovetails in, because of how splintery it is. It's a good job you didn't choose oak.. haha

your gaps were caused by the fact that you started chiseling right on the line. each time you hit the chisel the wood fibers were being pushed back :)

I really enjoyed that - it's inspired me to have my first go at dovetails too. So refreshing to see a project, warts n'all, rather then the polished perfect ones I usually watch which I really also enjoy but leave me feeling like I really ought to just give up and put all my tools on eBay. I loved one of your earlier videos (which I watched he other day) where you showed the state of your workshop after a days work - it could have been mine ;-) I have to ask - what's with the Celebrations tub by your workshop door? ;-)

my dovetails the first time was horrible but i build a marking gauge and a marking knife from scrap. then the work improved a lot. for your first time the joint is great i think.

Just discovered your channel. Thank you for all the content you created! May I ask what pencil hardness you are using? I used to work in commercial archaeology near Bedford and we always used 4H. As we were drawing on perma trace and often in the rain 4H was permanent enough (so you wouldnt wipe out your lines on the wet board) and yet produced very sharp lines. I also used to build kitchens with a carpenter friend down in the Southwest. And while watching this video I hear my friends voice when he kept banging on about 4H and that is the best and only pencil hardness to use. What do you think?

Rag 'n' Bone Brown well don't do it for anyone, apart for yourselves. I am getting married end of august, after being together for 9 (or 10? I keep forgetting) years. 2 kids. Bought a house. And only a couple of months ago I felt like getting married. Most of the family thinks its weird. Friends think its fun. We feel its fun to celebrate what we have.

great video Keith just wondering as u still have the hand plane as I'm 13 and from Scotland have just started to collect woodworking tools so this would be great
