    I like how humble you are, it's always nice to see that even the veteran woodworkers critique their work and point out things that they feel could've been done better. Makes a newbie, like me, feel better :-)

    Beautiful little jewelry box or trinket box how ever you want to call it. I would never have noticed the little mistakes as you called them if you hadn’t pointed them out to me. I really like the build so I saved it to my library and plan on making one myself if I can. I’m fairly new to woodworking but I’m so enjoying myself that I’m in my shop everyday. Thanks Colin for all of your videos.

    GREAT video Colin. The curved sides really make it special along with the top. Mistakes happen when working on a project, especially in woodworking. As these are instructional videos, the mistakes that you pointed out make this a much better video. Learning what not to do is just as important as what to do! Thanks again.

    It's beautiful. Just an idea for your next one. Instead of flocking, just stain the inside the same, and get a piece of card stock felt from the craft store and cut to fit. Another idea is to cut a piece of thin cardboard like from a cereal box and spray adhesive and stick black or brown velvet to the card board. Just like you would cover a seat cushion. It's beautiful. I recommend not sticking either to the wood, so it makes cleaning the inside easier.

    Nice idea on the laminated splines. Did you lay the inside ply at right angle to the two outer plies? With mitered box construction it would have been very easy to cut a quarter-inch groove for the bottom on the table saw before glue-up...not the look you wanted?

  • @knecht105

    @knecht105

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Michael Anderson Great point Michael ... no I did not cross mount the plywoods. All the plys were laid in the same orientation. I think it might be an idea to try a couple of different versions because you raise some good points. Basically all I did was glue up a the three sheets of veneers then press them in my wood vise for a couple of hours to keep them flat. This worked fine, but now I am wondering about trying your thought of the cross plys. Thanks for this ... some great ideas from this, appreciate your comments here ...

    Nice box, the top needs to screwed on to keep ashes from spilling after I am gone. Hell may make a base for looks. When dumped it can be handed down to someone who doesn't want top pay $200 for an urn. I think a jewelry urn would work great. Just fill with jewelry till time to use again. I have found so far that funeral directors don't like people donating urns for the needy. Use epoxy to seal bottom and top with screws and epoxy in the ashes are not going to be dumped.Keep up the good work, maybe build an urn and raffle it off to one of your viewers.

    That's a nice design with the curves and splining. The resawing of the curved sides came out nicely, but I'd hate to try that with a serious hardwood w/o a pretty significant bandsaw! +Wayne Welshans Hi Wayne, +HOPKIRK kinda nailed with "stronger", in a box this small, I really was not to concerned about strength, both would be fine, I was more concerned about the look, but now that you mention strength, that's a great point. My guess is that laminated splines would be slightly stronger just based on my knowledge that laminating woods together are almost always stronger than non-laminated woods. Often the wood will break before the glue joints, at least in long grain gluing which this was. Thanks for the comment on this ... I am going to see if I can expand more on the strength aspect of these kinds of splines. Great topic, thanks to both of you :)

    Wow that turned out so beautiful! I remember when you got those logs and I immediately wanted to go try and get some spalted logs, but I wasn't able to find anywhere to get it. Where would you recommend to look or where to ask for a chance to go try and get logs? Again thank you for such an amazing how to video for such a great box!

    +The Russian Woodworker Hey RW, spalted logs are hard to find. You need to get them when they are just beginning to rot, too far rotted they are not good and not rotted enough means they likely won't have spalting. There is a way of making your own ... I think Fine Woodworking mag had an article on this several years ago. Try Google, you will likely find something there. Making your own is the best, that way you have full control. Finding spalted logs is very hard and very often unsuccessful, I have only ever found a very few in my lifetime.

    +Robert Wolf It's an RZ Mask, and I am liking it so far, hoping to do a safety vid soon and will probably include it.

    +Mike Yow Not sure Mike, probably 3/4 hp, I am always amazed at what this little 12" bandsaw will cut through but I think it may have more to do with the blades. I'm always checking them for sharpness.

    +Steve McEntyre Thanks Steve, yes you are correct, I could have cut the rabbet before, but I like to show other methods from time to time just so others can see there are other ways and methods of fixing things they may have not thought about. I actually like this method, not so much for this kind of a build with 45 degree corners but for butt joints, much quicker than trying to figure out stop and start dado cuts, and you still need to cut them with a chisel in the end too ... thanks buddy, glad you raised the topic, good one to learn on, maybe something for a vid in the future, going to add this to my list :)
