Great video! Just made this for my Wife for our anniversary. I changed a few things (different handle was the main thing), but the overall plan and video were great to follow, thank you! I also used a Lid Stay from Brusso to hold the lid open at 95deg - that worked out nicely.

I thought, after I saw the box on Facebook, that you'd used brass pins to reinforce the joints, well after all I'm not disappointed by the bamboo dowels, but still think brass would have been another nice alternative. Also, using a pencil as a push stick is a great trick! I make RC sailboats, so am always cutting small planks - the pencil eraser push stick trick (and a jig) will work great for me, thanks!

If I had that box I would not want the lid to flop back too far. I would install a chain or other hardware inside to keep the lid in a generally vertical position when open. Also, a mirror on the under side of the lid would be a nice addition. A man needs a mirror when tying his tie, among other occasions.

I have a quick question. Are those hinges strong enough to hold the top up or does it swing all the way open. I am assuming that it only opens so far. If you have hinges that only open so far how would you support such a big lid? Side note: Love the video! I am trying woodworking for myself :)

When wood workers visit each other with plans on building something, how much of their own tools do they bring? Generally I hate using other peoples tools when working but do most wood workers have high enough standards that they don't mind working in another's shop?

How did you use french cleats to design the handle ? I've been trying to make one but apparently I'm not as advanced as you are with them.

Marc... why the use of loose tenons for the breadboard ends instead of cutting a tenon on the actual boards? Is there a structural reason or just easier? Great looking box. I may have to make one.

Thanks Jorge. Really it's just for simplicity. You have to cut a groove in the breadboard anyway so it's pretty easy to cut the groove in the top. Then you can cut the tenons/splines from scrap stock. In the end, the result is pretty much the same. Just a matter of how you choose to get there.

how would 3/8 box joints look on a box like that one

gotta remember the finish trick with the sanding pad. does it work with varnishes in general?

Yup, if you have it thinned for wiping it should work with any oil-based varnish.

+David Sili It should. Though I'm not sure if the wax content will gum up the grit making it less effective.

What is the handle for? Neither for carrying and nor for opening... for looking nice? That's arguable.

The purpose (aside from aethetics) is that it keeps a wide piece of wood from cupping over time.

So the wood will move in season and that's why he only added glue to the centre ones.

That handle bothers me; you're going to open the lid by the edge, not the center, and you can't pick the box up by it. There's gotta be some way of decorating the box without adding something that looks like it has no purpose.

It looks like something designed to hang your coat on, but obviously you can't because it's not on top of a stand or chair back. In other words it does look like it has a practical purpose, it just fails to actually be practical. Instead of the handle, you could always decorate the top with an inlay, perhaps something representational like a leaf, or a geometric design, or simply a contrasting wood grain like zebra wood. Initials of the owner are always nice. If the top is made of burl maple, the grain is enough decoration. Given the bevels on the finger joints, it might be especially nice on this piece to make the top of beveled boards so that the finished piece has grooves delineating each board.

All of these folks that make these you tube videos go through a lot of work to do so and I hate to be critical and most of the time I take what is of interest to me or something that I have learned from the vid away with me with gratitude and appreciation. I do appreciate this vid. The box is absolutely beautiful and nicely built. Cudos to all. But, since you brought it up, I would agree with you. The box is so beautiful in itself. Adding this truly oversized "handle"? destroys the box. Rather than a box with a handle....It has become a monstrous handle with oh yeah a box?
