I think what makes it more difficult to forgive social media influencers and their brands (as opposed to commercial giants such as Walmart, Target, etc.) is because we've developed parasocial relationships with these influencers. Some people take this stuff really personally. Plus, when one person is the face of the company it's hard not to put the blame of the whole thing on them. Look at Jaclyn Hill. If she's not the punching bag of influencers, idk who is. To be clear, I am not her fan/stan. I never vibed with her but I sure as heck was blaming her for all the shit going down with her messy collabs/brand. On the other hand, what makes it easier to forgive these huge companies is that they've embedded themselves into our literal society, particularly in less affluent areas, to put it nicely. Not only do these companies provide essentials at a discounted price but they literally employ our friends and family. For some of us the choice between boycotting a Walmart and a rich influencer that sells $40 candles is a no brainer. Anyway, yeah, I was never a customer because I just don't have that kind of disposable income but I think there's something to be said about why we're so much harder on these influencers than these multi billion dollar companies. Sometimes there's just not a choice, really. Only the illusion of it. Anyway, love your content 🙌 this was interesting.

I didn't have an opinion on the outrage as I am very much not Nigerian, but I'd been wanting to try one of her candles because I am into candles. I'd seen a lot of commentary on the clock app that people were just waiting for a reason to "cancel" her. On the note of keeping the same energy for large corporations, I completely agree. Often the same people that are so quick to try to ruin smaller businesses have no issues with spending all of their money at places like Wally World and Amazon. Yes we should hold businesses accountable when they make mistakes but attempting to "cancel" and ruin some of these small businesses is not always the answer either

Let Nigerians who felt first hand what happened in 2020 during the ENDSARS protest be outraged. SORO SOKE means speak up and that's what they did in 2020 despite having their internet shutdown, those who were vocal about the protest had to flee to other countries as their lives were in danger. Bank accounts frozen, people used personal resources to bail out those in police custody. Others believed to be in police custody were later found dead bodies disposed in the streets. The brutality that they went through despite peacefully protesting and lives lost is why they are outraged by what she did. It's not fake outrage and no they are not buying from Walmart because it isn't there. Let them be outraged they lived that day.

Full blooded Nigerian here. I rarely comment…. That said, she’s wrong. It’s disrespectful and tone deaf. I’m not outraged, just disappointed. Let’s be very clear, “Soro Soke” was the literal cry of a nation as a result of a horrific attack on its own people. She KNEW exactly what she was doing. Anyone saying otherwise is just delusional. It’s akin to naming a candle “I can’t breathe” or “Say her name”. Tasteless. ALSO, there is a huge difference between TRANSLATION and MEANING. People are getting caught up on the literal translation of the saying instead of understanding the MEANING and the spirit of the saying.

Jackie was blocking half of Nigeria in 2020 before she eventually spoke up about endSARS. Jackie knew exactly what she was doing cuz she's been in the game too damn long. But when it comes to bringing awareness and promoting the terroristic American military she'll be front and center every time( and the fact that the US military trains and militarizes SARS makes it that much worse). People DIED, she knows the meaning cuz it was all over Nigerian social media during the protests. Jackie isn't the first or only Nigerian diaspora to only rep naija when it comes to jollof rice and flashy clothes but be willingly ignorant in all other facets. Nigerians will claim you no matter if ur diaspora or even half, that isn't the problem here. Wild. After listening to this video and reading some of the comments I`m shocked. The disconnect between other black people in the diaspora (first generation immigrants, Ados) and Africans who live in Africa is huge. It be the same tone deaf people sensationalizing Africa or their African roots. Firstly, no one should be tell anyone how to respond to what Jackie Aina has done or claim that the outrage is fake/ overstated. ENDSARS is a recent event, people in Nigeria lost their loved ones. No brand, especially luxury brand outside of Nigeria should be attempting to profit off that. Their cry should not be used sensationalized. It`s straight up tone deaf and unethical. Lastly, people should stop gaslighting those who are showing outrage by bringing up other businesses who have done similar things, It`s not your place. Especially people who clearly know nothing about ENDSARS.

As a Nigerian, a lot of comments here show they don’t understand the nuance of the situation. In 2020 when Nigerians were being killed, Nigerians asked Jackie to speak up and she blocked them on social media. To come back and take the verbiage of something she didn’t even support shows how little she knows. She purposefully did not say anything when she was asked. Also…she didn’t really claim being Nigerian until being African became popular. Jackie didn’t have a full understanding of the phrase because she purposefully avoided people who were trying to educate her..a few people pointed out that it honestly seems like she did this for content. Edit: her candles aren’t even available in most parts of Africa, which is ironic.

How did she not even have a Nigerian auntie tell her? Her Ghanaian husband didn’t make a peep, either like he never heard of it either? Like just no connection… to the current culture of what she is trying to profit from? 😑 And she is up to the same old tactics- blocking people who are very respectfully trying to educate her. I intend to make a video on this topic as well. As a Nigerian, I understand the outrage. I was present at the END SARS protest and I was even at the very location of the massacre with some other protesters just two days before my fellow unarmed youths were murdered in cold blood, so it very well could’ve been ME!!! A lot of Non-Nigerian celebrities including Drake, Trey Songs, P Diddy etc used their platform to bring awareness to the End SARS movement. Some Nigerian-American KZreadr’s also used their platform to talk about it then e.g ELOHO. So I can understand why people would’ve expected Jackie to use her platform to talk about END SARS. It’s her platform and she can do whatever she wants with it but do u want to be Nigerian only when it’s convenient or when it’s time to make money? She eventually spoke about end sars after so much dragging had happened that people didn’t even care anymore and the buzz had totally died down and she had blocked so many people for asking her to talk about it (she wasn’t the only Nigerian influencer in diaspora that recieved backlash for this at the time, there was also Ronke Raji). In my opinion tho, I think Nigerians had already blacklisted her from that time so her making this tone deaf move this time around came off as her trying to profit off a cause she refused to speak up for, and of course, Nigerians didn’t like that. I just think people hold Jackie to a higher standard because she is a very vocal and is known to call out brands when necessary and also to lend her voice to causes that affect black people, so you see why it was a major let down? I know she definitely knew better, and the apology in my opinion could’ve been better, but then, the Nigerians she offended with That SORO SOKE name are not even her target customers, so it doesn’t affect her buck at the end of the day. U look beautiful btw, I always enjoy your humour. First time commenting 💜

You people will sit down in Nigeria and have never protested against your greedy selfish governors, local government chairmen, councilors, house of reps and senators who are individually responsible for the state of development challenges in Nigeria. The people who embezzled money in the Niger Delta, no protest; the Nigerians who privatized the electricity in Nigeria with nothing to show for it, no protest. Even with the police, you people did not even ask for effective and accountable funding for the police, just went to protest, destroyed properties and spread lies and misinformation because you saw Americans do something similar. Show me proof someone was killed.

What honestly annoyed me was seeing that the apology didn’t at all explain WHY this phrase was a problem. Nigerian fans had to go out of their way and teach everyone who didn’t understand. I’m grateful that I understand now! Maybe I’m asking too much but I hate that - tell me what you did, why it was wrong, and how it won’t happen again. Otherwise it’s, at best, just handling bad PR. The bare minimum was to change it, so I will give her that… I know the beauty/fragrance audience don’t even get that most of the time.

Speak on it. THAT was my issue with the notes app apology as well, many others said the same and its partly why people thought it was pre-planned. Just a vague "we dropped the ball, won't happen again" doesn't show any evidence of reflection on why people were offended (whether the outrage was justified or not is irrelevant). To the casual observer scrolling by, they'd have no idea what the hubbub was. And that's exactly how 4VER Mood wants it.

In response to the second part of your comment, I'm not sure what's difficult to understand. She literally gave two examples in the video; "I can't breathe" and "Say her name." These are phrases that have existed prior to the deaths of Eric Garner and Sandra Bland! Imagine someone made candles for profit named after these phrases?! No one is rooting for her downfall. The entire world profits off of Black trauma, and in the case of the Western world, African trauma. People are still reeling from the impact of the End Sars protests. I have friends who fled Nigeria at the time. I was on the phone with the friend whose apartment overlooked the massacre scene. On that night I had to comfort her to sleep with the sounds of gunshots on the phone! My neighbour was literally hiding in the bushes, playing dead as the soldiers opened fire. So, let's all be guided when speaking about this issue. And lastly, the collection was called Owambe. This literally means "it's there" in Yoruba. But it's what we called 'parties' in Nigeria; kinda like saying, "that's where the party's at." Soro Soke has nothing to do with party culture in Nigeria. So in addition to being insensitive, it also was not relevant to the theme of the collection.

I’m 100% Nigerian living in the US. A lot of diaspora babies with African parents had to deal with being called booty scratcher and other derogatory terms by Black Americans growing up. So they assimilated by rejecting or suppressing their African heritage. But now, it’s cool to be African or Nigerian, so many Nigerians see Nigerian-Americans who are now suddenly embracing our cultures as being performative-not because Black American culture is being put down in favor of being mixed with something else. I liked Jackie once upon a time. But it’s deeply offensive to those of us who felt the palpable silence from her and a few other Nigerian-Americans with platforms during the EndSARS movement-when young people were being heated, shot, and killed-to now see her and her company trying to clumsily capitalize off that very painful movement. (I was in Lagos at the time and heard the rapid fire gunshots across the water from my house. It was a harrowing experience and I wasn’t even at the Lekki tollgate.) And she wants to capitalize while not even opening sales of her products to Nigerians in Nigeria. So to all those who want to make excuses for Jackie or who, as another commenter said, are saving their outrage on this one, probably because you either don’t connect with the experiences of Nigerians or you don’t see it as a big deal, not a problem. That’s fine. But some of us see her apology as a standard hollow bullshit apology. She should’ve known and done better. Can’t even blame people for thinking all of this was planned for publicity because she should’ve known better. Yes, let’s keep the same energy for corporations. But we can still multitask

Bc plenty of Africans come here and call blk Americans akatas, cotton pickers, lazy and discredit blk American history(they do this in adulthood/childhood) & they discredit how blk history impacts blk Americans in the present. A lot of ADULT Africans come to America w/ their noses already tooted up at blk Americans & try their hardest to not associated w/ blk ppl to the point of making sure their kids don't associate or play with blk Americans. Kids clown eachother based on, apearance, height, weight, skin tone & where ppl r from, which is messed up but don't make it like their was actual hatred behind it. The way adult Africans react 2 blk Americans is what's actually hateful. Let's stop the bs pls. Other than that, this situation is messed up but it has nothing to do w/ blk Americans. Because if some other brand came out with an I cant breathe candle yall would feel some way too. I also see a lot of people saying that folks are just looking to cancel Jackie but that is not entirely true. Like many influencers, Jackie has been very problematic too but she is just better at hiding it than some. I don't think she will be affected very long by this because she does have a loyal fan base but next time she should do some research and get the opinion of others before releasing something with such a name.

What is owed/due, is owed/due ex: The Caribbean has Caricom, we have never spoken against such organizations. We support your cause. We have not ever said that Namibians of the Herero & Nama tribe don't deserve reparations from Germany for the barbaric genocide carried out over there. We always have stood of for blk brothers & sisters across the diaspora. @@Kodak718 Well, Jackie is half Nigerian, in this case. Her father is Nigerian right? I'm not familiar with Jackie much to know if she grew up on that side of her culture. In America, we might see things differently because we have made slogans and things based on police brutality, racism & other struggles ex: "I Can't Breathe" after the George Floyd incident, was on T-shirts to make statement & bring awareness, but it could be cultural difference in how we do things. I'm not saying Nigerians shouldn't be offended about the name Jackie used for her candles, I am saying that for Americans culturally we make merchandise reflective of oppressive events to bring awareness. Again cultural differences, which I respect. In this case, with Jackie being half Nigerian, I am seeing that SHE might be trying to connect more to her father's roots, if she was raised by her mother's side, but is there away to inform her by letting her know the offense it causes to Nigerians, being that she wasn't raised much with that side of her culture? Like a way to help her learn more about that part of who she is in a constructive way?

In my country, the Supreme Court effectively just made women second class citizens and told them in no uncertain terms they do not have the same bodily autonomy as a men. In my country, the FBI just had to raid a former President’s home and now his racist, conspiracy riddled supporters are threatening violence again against all who actually support the rule of law. In my country, there are floods that have swept away entire families and communities in minutes. Among my family and friends, I’ve lost more than 8 people to Covid and now Monkeypox rages without enough vaccine supply to inoculate everyone. I disagree with a lot of the comments, I feel that while some people may feel that people have overreacted it comes from a real place of the people that faced the brunt of end sars first hand! To add onto that whilst Jackie did speak up, people felt that they had to beg her. A theme that was pointed out that angered people was that they felt Nigerian culture is often tokenised and costumed for it's fun sides but no consideration is made for the darker sides and honest realities. End sars was a small tip of the iceberg of day to day life for plenty of Nigerians. Jackie is a black woman and unfortunately will face a degree of scrutiny her counterparts might not face, however, the reality is as someone of the diaspora and holding such a position in society (class wise) she can pick and choose what sides of it she likes and commercialise it. Jackie is human and will make mistakes, the same grace we afford to her should be afforded to those who were hurt by this. She could have done this so differently, it could have been something to acknowledge the atrocities and go to help, or simply spread awareness.

But I do appreciate you calling out the commodification of culture a lot of influencers do to stand out. The way Jackie presents being Naija led me to believe she was more connected to that culture than she apparently was. Although there is nothing wrong with embracing all sides of your identity, it seems a lot of these influencers amplify parts in a "I'm not like the other girls" type of way. I've always found it distasteful.
