"Thin was never out." and "Your body is not a trend." YES YES YES. Thin never went out of style, some of the movements gave a tiny bit of a spotlight on other people. (But thin was and still is always the rich, celebrity, 'aspirational' gold standard.) And the body types as trends is so dehumanizing and also sets so many completely impossible standards or trends to meet!!! And unless you are actually the Kardazzians, most of us don't have the money, access, or desire to constantly have plastic surgeries to fit the newest body type we're supposed to want to be!

As a pharmacy technician this has gotten completely out of control. We could not get any of these meds for months for our patients who genuinely needed it, and the supply is still sketchy. It is so hit or miss if we can get ozempic at this point we just transfer the script to any pharmacy that has it. And as the people behind the counter in real life, we are the ones who deal with the anger and frustration from the patients. Just thought I'd share my personal day to day experience with this mess. You touched on this, but people don’t have to use brand name Ozempic/Wegovy/Mounjaro. There are pharmacies in America who make compounded, generic versions of these medications. My mother is diabetic for 20+ years and she touts more than weight loss and A1C improvement, it’s mentally life changing. It’s not just lack of appetite, the “noise in her head is gone.” Wegovy is semaglutide that is already approved for weight loss, so I have no problem with people using it. I bet if people had the chance to reverse diabetes or prevent it from happening in the first place, they would jump at the chance.

I can only speak for myself, but i went to the dr bc i had gained a lot of weight very quickly and wanted it off. Im fine, but they did notice that i "getting close" to pre-diabetes. Obviously, no one can tell by looking at me that diabetes runs in my immediate family. So id rather be preventative now, than to get to diabetes and need it then. My doctor also rx a low carb diet. While its easy to assume people are doing it for vanity reasons, we must remember, we never know whats in other people's blood. Also our health care system is overly focused on treatment, not presentation.

Oh man. I have such a huge respect for you and generally for your opinions and was so surprised by your take on this. Disclaimer, I am a physician. We have erroneously made the assumption that the systems that regulate hunger and satiety are protected from pathology and that people simply have to eat less and move more to loose weight. News flash, only 0.5% of people who loose weight, maintain it long enough to prevent the development of disease. Obesity research is now focused on understanding the pathologies that lead to obesity rather than demonizing and gaslighting patients to think their habits are the problem. Ozempic makes it SOOOO easy for my patients to fix their habits because it deals with their pathology. Lots of them aren’t even trying and all of a sudden, they know what being full means, they aren’t hungry all the time, they aren’t thinking about food all the time etc. Is it really that hard for people to believe that people with obesity had something wrong to begin with? That they aren’t intentionally trying to eat themselves to an early death? It doesn’t work for everyone because not everyone has pathology in GLP. To hear people speak so incorrectly about obesity and the medications is appalling and both the obese and diabetic pt have similar pathology and the blame on obese patients for the shortage just makes no sense. Both the obese and the diabetic patient have a disease, one is just farther along than the other.

There were no social media, TV shows ended at a certain time, we socialised and danced more without being drunk, even liquor wasn't all mixed with sugar and syrup. The fact that now people have to travel to get all types of surgery just by watching social media, just to look goo on social media (all with extra filters) is showing how society is not moving forward the right way. I miss my 90s very thin hody, but I jndrrstand that in order to have it back, I would have to go back to what I used to do without technology. In reality, eat less, move more 💕

💉 The reality I see is that the antidote to all of these problems includes body acceptance and quite frankly, it’s well-deserved and overdue. No one but me and my doctor know why I’m being prescribed Wugovy, so I may be obese (which is apparently visible although I have questions about that because I was 2 pounds over morbid obesity and would get creepy compliments on my body from physicians until they saw my weight and started with the lectures) and have several other risk factors but no one is going to know that but me. Also, there is a long history of “Well, it’s ok because at least they’re not fat hahaha.” So it’s not surprising that the risk factors of the medication aren’t a concern. The bottom line is these medications probably aren’t for the Kardashiblahs or the Dusty Musky’s. These medications are for the people who are severely overweight, have tried every method not to be, and have other health problems. It’s ridiculous that you want to be the person that sets the “trends” on bodies- looking at you Kimmy- and then isn’t setting situations on fire with your words about how there’s injustice when they refuse to comply with body acceptance at every point. I’m just flat out exhausted with people thinking I give two abundant and icky dog poops about THEIR opinions on MY body.

Then I started with stomach pain. They had to reduce it and I’m trying this dose for two months to see if I can tolerate it. I’m a nurse and I have been taking Mounjaro since September 2022. GLP medications like Mounjaro and ozempic etc have been around for a while. Let me make something very clear. These medications are not life-saving meds for diabetics. These are not insulin. The research to its benefits beyond the realm of diabetes and weight loss are astounding. I have RA and it has greatly improved my inflammation and pain. There isn’t a “whose most worthy” when it comes to medication. That type of gate-keeping should be appalling to everyone, but I feel like more and more people feed into the rhetoric. No I don’t think this is necessarily the “best” option for someone needing to lose 10-20 lbs, but perspective is everything. I have a friend taking this that’s 4’9. The 20 lbs that she’s been trying to lose has been very painful on her small frame. What people are learning from taking these types of medication is that there is something “off” in our brains that leads to compulsive food behavior. Since taking Mounjaro, my food brain is in my control. As crazy as that sounds. And while my brain is allowing me to make more sound decisions when it comes to food, I am also learning how to eat better. So many of these videos are super judgmental without understanding the entire picture. Both my parents are diabetic along with all my aunts/uncles on my mothers side. And surprisingly they are some of the healthiest people I know. The predisposition that I have to diabetes is worth every bit of an all hands on deck effort to snatch back my life.

Obesity is killing our people! Yes people who are using it to lose less than 15lbs is a little off but that’s between them and their prescriber! My mom is diabetic and on ozempic and she’s doing fine. If diabetics can’t get their meds then they need to call the people making these meds instead of blaming ppl who are it off label! Mounjaro and ozempic and other GLP1s have saved some many lives of those who are non diabetic. Y’all acting like this insulin!!! People love chasing clout when it comes to these things. Diabetes II is still a metabolic syndrome that can be diet controlled. As someone who also sees patients that are told they are in pain because they are too fat but a system that does nothing to help them and then they are in too much pain to exercise, I can say this having a BMI over 25 with high cholesterol is also metabolic syndrome. That can be as easily or difficult to diet control as diabetes II. If in the States you run our of medication because healthy people were taking Ozempic to go to someone's wedding the real question was who was prescribing it and how were they accessing prescription medication. If the people who were taking it have metabolic syndrome and it helps the with weight control they need it as much as Diabetic people and the question is why was there scarcity of very much needed medication. You have same issues with insulin that unlike Ozempic lack of is actually life threatening and you have not as a society reacted as much even though it involves people with type I diabetes that cannot be diet controlled. I think the reaction has nothing to do with any medical reason or compassionate reason it has to do with fatphobia, pure and simple

Exactly, that is the problem I have with this video is she makes it sound like the only people who are using this med are either diabetics who need it to live or relatively thin people who are trying to lose a few pounds to fit into a dress. Obesity itself is a disease and considered a metabolic disorder, not to mention all the comorbidities and diseases that can result from obesity then you add on disordered eating and the fact that your stomach and brain literally are altered by the way you eat. The fact that this is treated like the medical condition it is and not just a will power or lifestyle issue is great and an improvement in the field. Not to mention, lifestyle change is just as difficult and not shown to be an attainable goal for long term weight loss, this video could cause those to shy away from life saving meds. If you need to lose half your body weight or more, you don't have years to get it right. If I could take a med to keep the weight off, I would take it if it will prevent me from actually getting diabetes or having a stroke/heart attack. Even if you have to take it the rest of your life, guess what that is better than all the other chronic meds you would have to take the rest of your life and is still causing damage to your body as well.

The thing about losing weight only to put it all back on and more later is the same for every weight loss intervention ever studied. There is no diet or lifestyle change that has been proven to result in long term weight loss on a population level. Most people’s don’t lose significant amounts, some people lose a reasonable amount and keep it off, but many lose weight only to put more back on later. So on average the most successful interventions result in a couple of lb of weight loses. Right now we be don’t have a lifestyle solution to being overweight. Telling people to eat less and exercise more is as likely to result in them being heavier than they are now in 5 years time as lighter. So while in theory it should work, in reality it’s not a solution

The trouble is people don't think about what is sustainable for the rest of their lives. Too many, are like my brother, popping diet pills and going on fad diets that call for drinking raw eggs and weird shake concoctions. People are often in the diet mindset. As in, diet for a few months and lose the weight. Then no more dieting. Except, going off the diet usually ends in gaining back the weight. This is because people return to the same habits that lead to their gaining weight. I've also noticed some people seem to think they can exercise their weight off. Exercise is wonderful for people, but so many people seem to overlook it's not possible to outrun a bad diet. You're not likely to make-up for every less than stellar food choice you make with exercise. It just doesn't burn as much as people think. Even when my brother was playing sports and drums in marching band as a student. Playing football and baseball. When he was at the pool all day. Even when he grew up and worked as a mechanic. He was big. He didn't make-up for it. No matter how much people try, there's just no outrunning a bad diet. It is possible to lose weight and keep it off. It just takes lifestyle change. Life-long adjustments and the way you choose to lose has to be sustainable. Something you can do forever.

I have nothing to say besides I’m sad lol. Really really sad because I was gonna ask my Dr abo it this medicine to help me with lb loss. I’ve been overweight since the 2nd grade. I’ve utterly struggled to lose weight. My struggles are directly related to my genetics as well as eating habits. Either way, I have to starve myself & go to unhealthy extreme ends to lose lbs. I only lost it when it was unhealthy, lost my hair & everything with it. I didn’t want the surgery because I’ve seen long term effects post-10 years. Now seeing that people are pissed over Ozempic plus the pancreatitis side effect just made me say fuck it everything’s literally impossible to do in 2023 😫😭 Just to point out people are having bad effects from Ozempic because they have the exact same dietary habits. You have to change everything. I wanted to take it for binge urges

This is what is frustrating for me about posts like this one. You are the exact person who could benefit from this medication and people are shaming you away from it using really false narratives. I normally agree with @nappyheadedjojobas take on things, but to me…she didn’t do her homework on this one to understand what these drugs are and only listened to narratives being put out by others. To clarify: 1) people who regularly work out (and work hard at it) misunderstand the difference between what it takes for them to either maintain their weight and/or lose a few pounds and what it would take for you, someone who possibly needs to lose 40-50% of your weight. It’s not the same thing. 2) Ozempic is not a magic pill that means you do t have to eat healthy or exercise. It is a pill that enables you to do those things over a long period of time. 3) you won’t magically keep the weight off without changing your diet and exercise. That is no different from any other kind of weight loss. I see the shaming of obese people who take Ozempic as just an extension of the insane fat shaming that takes place every where. People are telling you that you are not worthy of losing weight. It is easy to sit back and argue that society should just be more accepting of fat people if you are not one of them. It takes a greater level of empathy and understanding to see that there are many people who are overweight who have literally tried everything, done what they are told and it doesn’t give long term results. It takes a level of empathy to listen to people who have walked in different shoes. Sitting in a skinny body shaming people who want help is just another form of fat shaming imo

You should still speak with your doctor. Ozempic is not the only medicine available to help with weight loss. I actually spoke with my doctor about my options because I have a BMI over 40 and have high blood pressure and slightly elevated cholesterol. My issue was not that I did not want to change my diet as I had already started calorie counting and eating at a calorie deficit and had lost a few pounds but I always kind of yo yo dieted because I would lose some weight but it was hard to maintain a calorie deficit because I would have intense craving and strong hunger pains that was hard to ignore until I would overeat to literally feel better. My doctor told me about the options which were Ozempic, Wegovy, Wellbutrin, Mountjaro, and a couple others. I chose to try Wellbutrin and have been taking it and it has stopped me from having cravings and I have a sense of satisfaction when I eat where I don't feel the need to eat more or even feel full and I am down 12 lbs with calorie deficit and the med. I believe it works on receptors in the brain as it is also prescribed for those trying to quit smoking and its main use is for anxiety/depression. However, none of these meds replace diet or exercise, they just assist you along the way.

Still take the ozempic if you want to. Fat ppl shouldn’t feel shamed for trying to find a way to lose weight if they want ro, especially if you’ve been trying everything else. As a lifetime fatty, I’m on ozempic and it has definitely helped aid in weight loss like nothing else has (started at 320, now 275). It doesn’t not make you eat as much, it controls blood sugar.

If your doctor will approve it and you feel was needed take it. People are so judgmental. You also have to eat right. People are quick to use all kinds unhealthy hair ,cleaning skin products. Smoke and drink which kills people slowly. Don't let somebody else's misguided comments stop you from living your life. It's easy for someone that's never been fat before to tell someone else what to do.

As you mentioned, and aside from the shortage in medication for those with diabetes, those taking this drug will never keep the weight off. Weight loss takes dedication, adjusting your diet, getting more exercise, and a change in mindset as well as routine. Unless they take the medication forever, they'll gain it right back plus some. I was a former phentermine user until it messed with my heart. I realized at that point it was going to be up to ME to make the necessary changes to keep myself at a healthy weight. There is no easy way out of it.

Ngl I would use it too if I could afford it... My eating problems have been identified as emotional eating due to CPTSD (by a NHS psychiatrist). But can I get any actual help from the NHS for my psychological conditions? Nope. So if you can't afford to go private, you are stuck with emotional eating. No amount of self-help has fixed the issue. I'm at risk of loads of physical medical problems (that the NHS WILL actually treat) like diabetes and osteoporosis... All of which could be avoided if they did their job and treated my CPTSD! The NHS is costing themselves more in the long-run by having such terrible MH provision

Wegovy has ALWAYS been a weight-loss medication. Ozempic has been formulated for diabetes and is being used off label for weightloss. Weight-loss (healthcare in general) should be between the patient and their doctor and I will never judge someone for what they think is right for their individual needs.

It has somewhat helped my insulin resistance but not worth it as I have been miserable for a month and still haven't been able to tolerate the prescribed dose. You have to take it for life to work. Thanks for this! Always interested in what your take is. Would be interested in your thoughts on the stuff some outlets (I heard it on the Science vs podcast) about how science is now saying that most people only lose 20% of their body weight at most with diet and exercise and that drugs like these help with satiation (sp?). I’m newly diagnosed with diabetes and my doc wanted to put me right on the O but I’m terrified of it for all the reasons you outlined. So I said no thank you. Anyway, love to hear your takes!
