In this particular instance they’re asking yes or no questions and giving him direct rhetorical statements. Because of the time limits, representatives like the TikTok CEO and anyone else that rolls through usually want to answer a yes or no question with a long winded statement. “Filibusting” if you will. If they eat away at the Congress peoples time, they can avoid a significant amount scrutiny. Sometimes the answers require more nuance than yes or no, but it’s easier to tell when someone is being nuanced or simply being evasive.

He clearly told him the code of tictoc is a global project and only part of the code is done in china. But he still insisted in forcing him to say that china did it all and that they are guilty without any proof that they are doing what they claim they do.

Hey, Computer Science Major. I've been programming for 30 years and have programmed in a half a dozen languages. Tell me what do all computer languages boil down to.. "ones and zeros". That's what the CPU expects. Just because he "ones and zeros" that doesn't mean he only programmed in Assembly language.

@@jerrware As far im aware , nobody code in assembly language anymore , thats was the 80s . Last time i knew about programmers doing that was in monochrom calculators writting tetris based and hess games. Good luck trying to maintain a program of many millions lines of code ,among dozens of programmers groups world wide using just zero's and one's. TIC TOC was written in JAVA language for Android platform and other languages for the IOS version.

Bill Johnson asks him a question with a "why?", Then switches it to a yes or no question before the CEO could even finish a word. What kind of Congress is this? If TikTok goes down, there will be another app that'll bring the people together. We all want peace, and want to relate in a more positive lifestyle, but these twats just want us to feel like we about to die every single day, and it's getting really old.

@@Kevin-jc1fx because it makes zero sense. i am a software developer for an American business. here is a simple example of why not. the IT guy mentions “classes and functions” being re-used between each software and he mentions there are MANY classes and functions re-used. i’ve written a ton of code for the business i work for and there are many classes and functions i re-use across my programs. sometimes they require zero changes and sometimes tiny ones. however, some classes are very general purpose and can apply to countless types of software. i have a class for FedEx and a class for UPS. to clarify i’m very simple terms, a class holds functions inside it and they perform tasks. i have a class that connects to the FedEx API and also one for UPS whose main purpose is retrieving tracking data. this is quite simple code but very useful and if i worked somewhere else, i would just re-use this code unchanged. there would be no issue legally because there is nothing particularly unique about such as some proprietary algorithm or other design that is unique to the business i made it at. there would be no reason for me to re-write this class just to use it elsewhere. this is just how things work in programming

Because it’s a loaded question that implies that back doors are built into the app. It’s similar to the question “Have you stopped beating your wife?”. Regardless yes or no, the implication is that you do beat your wife.

The CEO was only allowed to answer YES or NO.

I am a proud US military veteran and patriot... However, I am ashamed that our government might be unfairly discriminating against TikTok simply because of the creator's and owner's nationality... Because they are Chinese... That's not a justifiable reason to discriminate and be prejudice towards them... TikTok isn't doing anything that Facebook, KZread, and Instagram, aren't doing... But our government wishes to punish TikTok's entrepreneurial endeavors because of it's ethnicity and origin... That's not right... We shouldn't impose penalties or protocols upon TikTok that isn't being equally imposed upon the similar social media companies... We shouldn't single them out... Look, I am all for rigorous review, but this guy is talking about reused "functions and classes" between two apps with very similar functionality, which literally a 1st year CS student would know immediately is not only extremely common practice, it's essentially meaningless as for whether there's any culpability. Of COURSE you reuse code between two very similar apps. That's 100% normal, and it would be idiotic to expect anything else. Next, he presents a bunch of open ended questions, then when Chew tries to answer, he cuts him off and demands a yes/no answer to a new question. Then when Chew tries to answer that, he switches back to open ended questions and threats (do you know lying is a crime?!?!). If this is what all of the hearing is like, it's a complete dog and pony act. And that's not even getting into the premise of the hearing, which is that tiktok collects user data (like no s!!t man, literally ever internet app on the planet does that). I have never used tiktok and I find it kind of annoying, but this is honestly embarassing.

You missed the parts when he keeps mentioning "1s and 0s"😂. All I thought was please tell me when the last time a programmer wrote a "1" or a "0" in their life! I looked the congressman up because he said he worked in IT his whole life, but he worked in management and sales, which is like someone telling you that they've worked in the healthcare field, which makes you think a doctor or nurse, but they were a pharmaceutical rep. But you're right, I'm for rigorous review too but this guy is just scaring and taking advantage of his constituents that have never programmed.

Collecting user data for nefarious reasons is completely different from collecting user data for commercial reasons. Members of Congress might seem clownish and comical to you, but their raison d'etre is to protect the USA from malign foreign entities, of which this man, I personally believe, represents.

these congressmen and women including their so-called experts wanted to ask all the tough questions but won't let a single second to allow their counterpart to respond without interruption. What is wrong with these politicians?

Why would he or anybody else in government care about lying under oath? It’s very obvious that there’s zero accountability for anybody who purgers themselves.

The problem is not that these Congressmen are not IT experts, we can't expect everyone to know about technology in detail. The problem is the whole session they were saying incomprehensible nonsense and not letting the other side respond to anything.

I’m pretty active on multiple social media platforms. But I’ve never had the urge to use TikTok. It seems as if I’m not really missing anything important.

It's not an open floor for Mr. Chew. Congress members have control of the floor. Mr. Chew is to answer the questions asked of him, without delay, filibustering or deception. It's not his privilege to use the floor to make nonrelevant arguments or any other statements. Mr. Chew can make those arguments and statements outside of the hearing on his own time.

An email will allow the potential spy to formulate and prepare his answers over many hours, and allow him the luxury of not being caught red-handed. Spontaneity is important when you want to uncover a malign actor. What an absolutely dumb thing to say, email.

@@Chevyno10 It doesn't matter whether or not this itself is a debate. The point is, anyone who has participated in competitive debate tournaments knows about these techniques. And if we want to consider the actual use of these techniques in debate, it doesn't matter if people are given time to speak. It's never guaranteed that one side is given their full amount of time. Most debates aren't like this, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen or it's invalid. Similarly, most hearings aren't like this, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen or it's invalid.

I'm always amazed when politicians and poles ask a question and claim it's a yes or no answer when in fact it's an essay question...

In some cases yes. But in this case it was a yes or no question. "Did you order them to change the source code?" "No." "Okay, why?" Then it would be an essay question.

Imagine you asked me if I had breakfast this morning. I start my response with "Thank you for asking me that question" then continue with a dissertation on my political views on breakfast cereal and my thoughts on the ethics of eating eggs. Some questions are simply answered with a yes or a no.

@@aes0p895 That's a foolish comparison. "When did you stop beating your wife" has a possibility of a non-applicable answer. "Did you order so-and-so to do x-y-z" has only two answer choices. Either you gave the order, or you did not. There may be an explanation behind either answer, but whether you conveyed the message to that person is yes or no.

The congressman from Ohio is grilling himself. This hearing is nothing less than an indictment of American politicians. I don't find myself feeling sorry for tech millionaires very often, but putting them in front of congress does it. Nobody deserves to be surrounded by this degree of unintelligence.

I definitely think TikTok should be banned as it is indeed a national security threat, but the way that the Congressmen are handling this hearing would make me root for the other guy in a heartbeat if I didn't know any better already. They gotta work on how they do these hearings, it does not look good on them, especially ahead of an election season. Won't even let the man speak. Just want to hear themselves talk.

Chew is calm, patient and has high EQ. He didn't smirk like Zuckerberg did (an understandable reaction). Instead he is very respectful and tolerating even being constantly cut off when he speaks.

Shouldn't he be given an interrupted equal 5 minutes to answer each question asked?
