Chew has already pointed out3 out of 5 board members are US citizen. The majority of the shareholders are American. Essentially, it operates as an American company, albeit with Chinese investors. This scenario is not significantly different from that of Tesla, Apple, and other corporations with substantial operations in China.

Cotton, you need to learn much from Senator Cornyn. He's asking all the valid questions, he accorded that basic respect to the person he's having conversation with and he's very likely a whole lot more knowledgeable about communism than you ever will be. Forget it Cotton, you should just hand in your resignation letter and get out of politics altogether.

  • @edb3255

Now that's a good question. I know there's the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), a European law that established protections for privacy and security of personal data about individuals in European Economic Area. In the U.S. we have many websites that imply they comply with that law. Technically, any website can add language on that policy and other policies required by the U.S., but it doesn't mean they are really complying. But I know the EU has very strict laws about the personal data of their citizens that U.S. companies that have customers/users from those countries are very well versed in, and are either in compliance or violation of.

Isn't it not the right call to faze out media out over time since western forces might influence the minds and interests of people living in countries that are not vazal states of the US? Is the US worried because other nations might do what they have been doing for ages? Is it worried because they cannot use TikTok to spy on other citizens? Is it worried because they have used social media and other media to dehumanise other people like they have done for centuries to Asians, Russians, Arabs etc

Free market capitalism means global economies of scale. Disallowing foreign companies outright to sell their services to US citizens would not only be against freedom of trade but also majorly impact foreign policy and trade relations the US has with countries like Singapore, China, etc. However, I agree that this facade is a waste of time and we need a better system to properly investigate and prosecute than this board of idiots.

It shocks only you and your fellows. US senators and US citizens should consider carefully a company like Tik Tok which has serious bonds with Chinese government. All tik tok user data are on the hands of Chinese government. That's a serious threat. India banned Tik Tok, European countries are too permissive to ban Tik tok. US senators this time defends the national security.

Though owned by a Chinese citizen Tiktok undoubtedly HQ in Singapore Singapore law prevail its CEO is a Singaporean that's nothing wrong about it. The senators should focus on the subject not question the CEO nationality. Remember Byte dance the parent company of tiktok who also owned douyin in china have absolute rights to hire any capable person including capable american to serve the company. The Singaporean CEO obviously has done a very good job to bring tiktok to the US and become top.favorite app there. With this alone fb yt may want tiktok to be out. That's the entire motive and clearly reflected in the way how the senator question him.

As a precautionary measure in the event of lawsuit or subpoena where they may opt to be represented by lawyers. Taking notes of statements and questions and answers provided is good corpo practice. It is also a good way to catch the same politicians with their own agendas while under the pretext of protecting the public since these politicians have a tendency to contradict themselves very often. The best part of this is never once has the 3 major American shareholders (Blackrock, Sequoia and General Atlantic) in total owns about 60% of Bytedance so technically Bytedance is an majority American owned company registered in China. Personally I think Mr. Chew has been too polite to never point this out nor the other non-jurisdictional corporate structuring that already has to be in place since nations or blocs started requiring the on-shoring of citizens data, for example the EU’s GDPR requires all European citizens data to be hosted physically within the EU, guess which companies fought the hardest against that? In order to operate a global service/platform company, said company has to comply with the local laws of every country they want to operate in since the issue was data sovereignty was brought up a while back and laws are created to enforce them. Same reason why Facebook, Twitter, etc all have database servers all over the world today from the original everything hosted in US a decade ago.
