Doesnt help that anti-immigration states bussed them over by the thousands but yes they did get what they voted for. The people that vote for something should be first in line to experince the result of their own politics, like the feminists that want a mandatory draft for both sexes to the military.

Easy to prevent theft. Easy to verify if there are outside forces lobbying for unrest in NY. I'm from Europe, but I think in USA this is also possible. Not sure why nobody tried doing it yet. Shops that would do it, would break the bank in NYC. There is something called "certificate of good conduct". This is a way, to determine if someone has any criminal record. It's very likely, that most people who are in that line of "work", also have criminal record. Team up with local shops, and finance an opt in database for people who have no criminal record. People can register online, and are issued a pass card. You can only enter the shop premise, if you are allowed, and have a card issued. Otherwise, you are considered a trespasser on private property, or even breaking and entering. Consult lawyers how far can they push it, find all ways, legal exploits to bend the law to penalize barging into a shop without a pass and or permission as much it's possible, make a shop a "private club" or some such. If you are issued a card, and are found stealing, it can be revoked anyway. Theft would fall on it's face. Shops could afford to make products wayyyy cheaper than shops which have to deal with theft. People would feel safer in those places. Everyone would go shop there ( well, not everyone 😉 ). People today lost all problem solving skills. Unless government does everything for them, they act hopeless and roll over.

"My cousin only takes certain things. Not things like this." "Why was it stolen?! It's not an essential item." "Why did they rob the poor old couple and not a Target?" This isn't robin hood. You literally see 5 year olds walking around the city completely by themselves, going to school and running errands. Plus the streets are squeaky clean, despite it being a mission to find a public trashcan. They are taught from an early age to respect their elders and to clean up after themselves - including recycling, which they take seriously. A quick google search on "shoplifting in japan" will give an idea of how they handle small crimes.

In the movies crime conveniently occurs in one location at a time allowing the hero to show up and take out the bad guys. In the real-world crime occurs in every city across the state. It's Los Angeles, not NYC, that's had the highest rate of retail theft since 2018. After that, the list goes: San Fran, Houston, NYC, Seattle, Atlanta, Sacramento, Denver. Approx. 22 states have a petty theft amount of $1,000, like NY. Others are a little higher/lower. The crime of Petty Larceny in NY has a sentence that could include probation, fines, or jail time. In May 2023, NY mayor Eric Adams announced a more comprehensive plan to combat retail theft. Ten days ago, on April 18th, NY Governor Kathy Hochul announced new initiatives to crack down on organized theft rings, protect frontline workers, and give new felony penalties.

I used to think the same way as you Jordan, about throwing people in jail for every possible crime. But then you realize that you have to pay for the person who is in jail/prison. You essentially move them from being partially subsidized by the people who choose to shop at the store or accidentally buy stolen merch online, to being completely subsidized by your tax dollars. Secondly, once the person is thrown in prison for a felony level offense, they are essentially unemployable in this country, at least at most establishments. So now not only created a tangible cost to physically imprison this person, created a social cost that this man is now removed from the workforce while in prison. And created a secondary social cost that this person now has a higher chance of becoming a career criminal after prison. Because if they cannot make ends meet by getting a traditional job. They are going to make it somehow.

The store was pretty much empty and I saw most of the merchandise locked up. I was not aware of what was happening and asked the staff about it. They unlocked the product and apologized for the situation. The staff looked sad, frustrated, like waiting for the store to be closed forever.

Also when I agree the stealing is wrong, there is no excuse for it. But it cost just as much and if not more to lock these people up for shoplifting. The major problem is that the laws that are on the books are not being enforced AT ALL. These people feel they can come in and just steal with impunity. Never get arrested. Since there is no enforcement, there essentially is no law. If these people were getting arrested and getting criminal records that had increasing penalties and counted against them on the books the level of crime would decrease significantly. I wholeheartedly agree with the gentlemen that increasing penalties is not going to decrease the crime. When the problem is enforcement of the law.
