Interpreter Note-Taking: The Power of Selectivity
Renowned interpretation trainer Virginia Valencia of Interpretrain.com, author of "Note-Taking Manual: A Study Guide for Interpreters and Everyone Who Takes Notes," taught this webinar on how to quickly capture in writing the main ideas of what you hear. When it comes to taking effective notes, what you don't jot down is as important as what you do. Our one-hour session drills this essential skill and takes your consecutive, spoken-language interpretation (sometimes called "translation") to the next level. Virginia uses a document camera to demonstrate live her own note-taking symbols, techniques and abbreviations. This is a language-neutral presentation in English, hosted by Marco Hanson of Texan Translation.

Hello guys. Saludos desde Guadalajara Jalisco México. Thank you so much for sharing such a valuable information.
I loved your presentation. This is a wonderful and very complete teaching and practice.
Amazing class! I'm just starting to study for a career as an Interpreter and this was my first contact to note taking. I'm amazed!
I found the video helpful in that it helped me review several principles of note-taking I had forgotten. By the way, thanks for mentioning the SPEECH REPOSITORY, a phenomenal tool, and on top of it is FREE! I started practicing today and putting into practice what I've learned so far about note-taking.

Yes, I agree!
Thank you very much for this note-taking training. I've got a question, which is best or easiest to your experiences in note-taking, between using the target language versus the source language? I was once taught by my former boss/mentor when still working in-house as a sworn translator-cum-interpreter for English into Indonesia VV, it is the target language. Oh, you've answered it, so, mixed language will be best?
Grazie
I believe in interpreting in real life, we are all humans and not everything goes perfect, however we need to make sure in the end that the message was accurate and complete by interrupting and clarifying when necessary, but of course that's why a lot of studying, practicing and training is crucial. That's the gist of the job.
