Medical Interpreting Program

General medical vocabulary is presented in Spanish and English. Sight translation of typical forms used in hospitals, such as MRI screening, refusal to permit blood transfusion, and discharge instructions are discussed in this course. Colloquialisms and slangs are also presented in this course. Consecutive techniques leading to a maximum length of 40 terms per segment are introduced. Techniques for the simultaneous mode of interpreting leading to a maximum speed of 130 words per minute are also part of this course. This course consists of 27 hours of instruction, four quizzes, one midterm, one final examination, and two over-the-phone assessments. It also includes access to our Online Interpreting Laboratory.

Usaría “secreción” para interpretar “discharge” en vez de “supuración”. Superación significa que la secreción lleva pus. “Discharge” no necesariamente significa que esté infectado. Puede ser líquido claro saliendo de una herida o fluido vaginal o secreción nasal por ejemplo.

@@sanzashop4224 Hi!, first of all I wish you all the best to you and I hope you to get hired ASAP. Unfortunately most of the courses I'm taking right now are from English/Spanish Interpretation but there are a few Facebook pages that may help us to do it better. Those are only English speaking pages, I've never paid any online course in my life and also I've never been living in USA or a English speaking country, because this skills/abilities are from experience and practice the best advice I would say is just to consume content in English. May be tough but watching or listening to English series/movies/songs is a great idea. Also changing your devices or videogames language to English may help A LOT. It may sound insignificant but it REALLY helped me to expand my vocabulary and grammar also the slangs and idioms I know. I can affirm that the most effective way to improve in this field is practicing. If you know a native English speaker or If you are maybe In a Discord server or you know "Omegle" there should be always somebody to help for free. And you can make friends too! Wishing you all the best, feel free to ask something else. By the way, I haven't started my training yet because I'm in a process of moving so hopefully in a week or two I will begin my training courses, meanwhile I'm practicing.

Doctors use a lot kidney fuction but they also use renal disease. Should we always interpret as RENAL because i understand that for some reason they prefer to use the term kidney and not renal. Otherwise, they will just say renal function. I believe we are changing the register if they use kidney and we translate it for renal.

Even if we don’t think the patient knows words in the higher register as profesional interpreters we still have to translate the words in the register the doctor used, which is frustrating because the ultimate goal is communicating the message so the patient/client will understand. If we don’t interpret the register we aren’t interpreting the message accurately.

1:12:54 “Luxación” For an interpreting EXAM - yes. But for a large part of the LEP patient population for Spanish, specifically more from certain areas between South and North America, where there’s a tendency to identify parts of the human body with terms used for a cow and meat cuts… 🤦🏻{sighs} yeah, not so understood. And they won’t ask what it means either if you use a term correctly so you may end up having to go back cuz at the end of the doc’s spiel they weren’t getting what the diagnosis or question meant… or maybe just negotiate using cow parts like “chamorro” or “quadril” … and btw “brazo” is used to mean ANY part of the arm, like the hand, and the same goes for “pie”, which could for them mean the whole leg, or a knee, but less often foot, ironically … So, get ready to clarify A LOT.

This style of interpretation only serves the interpreter and their ego. You are interpreting for the patient, not to pat yourself with your Spanish on your back. Because you are interpreting FOR THE PATIENT, you use the closest interpretation available that is understandable for the patient. Most of the options offered here are too elevated for many Spanish-speakers who come in as patients, adding confusion in a conversation.
