Great video. I just installed a new duralast platinum H8-AGM. Getting the right side of the distribution part loose was a royal pain. I had to really torque the part to pry it loose. I was afraid it was going to break and that alone took 15 minutes. Also, the bracket to hold the battery in place was also a royal pain. There is limited room to line up the bracket. I used my extension and taped the screw to the socket. Also, the extension was on a little swivel which helped screw into the bracket. The alarm did go off when I removed the negative. I just used the key it stopped. I did not lose my "touch" settings on the radio. I turned the car on, and I did have to set the clock as described. No errors and all is good!

Nice video thank you, it will save me a lot of time when replacing the battery on my son's 3 series later this week. I am pretty sure the 'bracket' is actually a brace to stop the battery from moving or flying though the air in the event of an impact/crash? It also obviously doubles as some kind of support for the boot (trunk!) trim etc

As some have commented below, you will need to register the battery, if the same specifications, or code the battery if they are materially different. From homework, the 90, 92, or 95amp, as long as same CCA and staying with AGM battery, is same specification. I used Bimmerlink via OBD Vlink dongle to register the battery, was the simplest and most affordable combination -- although it was sensitive to being in ignition position 2 (so engine not running, but dash and interior fans on). Finally regarding the bracket over the battery, I think is safety device mainly, obviously holds the battery in place, but suspect is if the vehicle is in a rollover, that it has better chance of holding it relatively in place.

FYI, the yellow/black twisted pair cable near the positive terminal is used by the ECU to trigger a tiny explosive to break off the starter to battery connectivity in case of collision when airbags are deployed. When that happens, the radio, lighting, etc will still work because the distribution block to battery connectivity is still intact. However you just can't start the engine. Don't ask me how I know these...

Hey thanks for the video, I am about to do the same to my 2011 335D. I was concerned about the registering of the battery and setting the amp hours. There is another video on here that the guy uses a snap on diagnostic tool to set the amp hours and register the battery. Since you replaced the original battery, I am also replacing the original battery. Did you get a battery that was exactly the same specs? If so which one did you get so I can follow suit? It would make sense that if the specs of the battery do not change that there would be no need to register the battery, etc. Also what issues were you having with your car that lead you to change the battery?

  • @CoderMan

I got a duralast battery, exact spec as the stock one. I was getting charge errors when I would start the car. Thought it was electrical components and decided to swap the battery (it was original from 2011). Once I swapped all the issues went away.

Then I went to Advanced auto parts to see if it was the battery or anything else, they told me it was the battery. I had to jump start the car again. I just spoke to my local BMW dealer and they told me that if you change the battery with the exact same one, you don’t have to code it. He told me that for my specific battery, 12V 90AH 720A I didn’t have to do anything. It’s for a 2011 328i Xdrive. Surprisingly enough the battery is just $154 at my local BMW dealer. Some models, I've noticed, have an extended long rod to pilot the bolt into the hole. I am not sure how important it is to register the batter, but I see many battery installs where they use a scanner to tell the car it's a new battery. Be well. Phil NYC Area

@@CoderMan No worries on missing my comment. Yes. The car is now running. After days of troubleshooting, installing a new battery and buying a relay that goes bad sometimes on the fuse box it turns out the braided grounding strap/cable that goes from the body to the engine was corroded and not grounding the starter. My mechanic (when I called him) said could be the starter, but try this first as grounding straps go bad over time. He told me to take a jumper cable and put one end on the ground post on the body and take the other end and put it on something metal on the engine and and see if she turns over and starts. And it did! The strap on my 2008 E90 is tough to get to, so I had him do it, but thankfully it was not the starter. Who would have thought just a ground wire went bad. Alarmed cars have failsafes to go off when the battery is disconnected. Im not sure if it’s an OEM alarm or aftermarket. You could pull the fuse or let it go off and then work on the car. You’ll get weird looks from passerby’s but should be fine.

Don’t trust him. You need to code it, even if it’s an exact replacement. The car monitors the battery’s health and as it deteriorated it gives the battery more current from the alternator to make up for its age. The coding lets the car know it’s a new battery and to not have the alternator charge it as aggressively. Like I said, this is about a batteries age, not about swapping a battery with one with different performance specs. The extra power to the battery could cause it to fail prematurely, and who knows if it can do anything dangerous or maybe later fry a module. There are affordable scan tools that do this and this is becoming more common on batteries, not just BMW’s. Be smart and do it right. Don’t listen to this guy just because he could take some bolts off a battery and put them back on. He says he’s afraid of what a battery tender while swapping the battery will do to his car yet he is willing to do this. Makes no sense. I also wouldn’t use a tender because I agree it’s not worth the risk, but then why not code the battery properly!?

Awesome! I do have some videos on getting started in programming, but the main point i'll touch on is focus on programming overall, not one language. What I mean by this is come up with a product or tool, use languages/frameworks you want to learn and build that thing. Learn by doing is the best way to learn programming or pretty much any skill. In regards to coding as a side hustle, the biggest thing is to network and connect with agencies. Offer your services, only commit to things you know or can learn/execute without delay. My first Ruby on Rails project I accepted was when I didn't even know how to install Ruby. Mainly, have fun with it. Keep learning, keep building fun projects, create a portfolio site and keep it updated. Oh and for programmers, definitely set up a GitHub account to share coding samples. If you want me to look at any of your code or want to bounce ideas, shoot me a message. matt@pixelbit.com

I appreciate your feedback, I did extensive research and have an electronics background. I also added a note in the post about deciding if you want to or not. @@CoderMan Who cares about your electronics background. You were claiming since the battery has the same technical spec's as the old battery it's not an issue. You can be a whiz with electronics (not hating on you or doubting what you can do) and still be wrong here. When it comes to modern car's electrical systems, I wouldn't play around. They are so finicky. You'll even see people accidentally frying their footwell module on E90 etc. BMW's just from disconnecting their battery. It shouldn't happen, and they even had to extend the module's warranty, but my point is just these systems are super delicate, sometimes more so than you would want as an owner. I am agreeing with you on the battery tender. My comment is related to an inconsistency in your approach. A tender is too risky to use because it can mess up your electronics in your car (I agree), but not coding the battery as intended and causing it to get greater charging current than designed is ok (I disagree).

You can use the Carly app to code it, if required. If the specs are 100% the sale you may find the car won’t require a coding.

I have uses Varta F18 battery. It is not AGM battery but what Vartas battery selector recommended. Everything worked but the car is in limp mode throwing actutator fault code. This failt code appeared right after my last batterys failured before i took the battery out with battery orange light. The acutator failt code ad limp mode dissapear aftwr 10mins with new battery but came back. The new battery is 85a the old onr was agn with 92. With varta site it says without start stop engine no agm needed, my is the first gen had no start and stop so it worked.. Just curious could battery cause limp mode with acutator code fault? If i dont registet what will be damage? Thanks

@@timcheou5649 It won't damage the battery, just shorten its life. You mentioned throttle actuator code. Have you ruled out needed to replace the TA? As they do fail on this car. I have not heard of limp mode with battery drain/failure. Unless the ECM isn't being powered properly. I would first check the ratings on the battery and determine if the TA is the culprit. I have a video on the channel for replacing them.

@@CoderMan Thanks for getting back to me, i have replaced it with 85AH 800CCA Varta battery F18, followed your video, I got the spec from Varta battery finder which state that if the car did not come with start and stop fuel saving thing this is a cheap and good battery to use, so i went for this one. I needed to replace the battery because it was showing battery orange logo for 3 weeks, then finally it went into limp mode and emssiom excessive no dsc, so i relplace the battery it drove ok for 5 min then limp mode again, so i assume maybe the old battery have cause some surge that damaged throttle acutators pcb, or its a coincidence that acutators are on its way out happened same time with battery fault orange light. I did test the old battery before decide replacing it, it was showing battery life 41 percent. The fault code i am getting now before battery replace and after replaced are CBDF 2B16 2b26 Cd93 Look like a dead acutator.. Thanks so much for getting back to me, i wont register the battery then as this battery is cheaper as long ss it can last 3 years i am happy. Its also much much lighter and smaller... It is sad that standard work shops OBD 2 cannot register the battery but can reset fault codes... As long as this battery wont damage cars pcb and electrical and will last 3years i wont bother to register.. I always work on this csr with my self.. dont trust my local work shop.. In asia wage are low... i can only afford this car and keep it in the healthiest stock setting possible. No extra fund to mod. I only run this car in stock format.

Stock is sometimes the most enjoyable. Look for a BMW tech that has the proper scan tool, they should be able to get the DME codes.

From BMW's ISTA+ Why register the battery replacement? After installing a new battery, the service function 'Register battery replacement' must be run. The registration of the battery replacement is required to inform the power management (software in engine electronics and intelligent battery sensor) that a new battery was installed in the vehicle. If the battery replacement is not registered, the power management will not function properly and can lead to functions being limited by individual electrical consumers being switched off or having their power consumption reduced, for example. Register battery replacement A service function informs the power management in the DME/DDE of a battery exchange. The following operations are performed: - The current kilometre reading is stored for the battery replacement. - The stored measured values (battery charge statuses, current, voltage, temperature, etc.) are deleted. - The power management is initialised. Replacing the battery: other battery capacity or AGM battery As the battery depends on the engine ands options fitted, the following information is coded in the CAS: - Battery capacity (for example 90 Ah) - Battery type: AGM battery or normal lead-acid battery. For a battery replacement, the standard installed battery capacity may be used as standard. When installing a battery with a higher or lower capacity or when installing an AGM battery instead of a normal lead-acid battery, the CAS must therefore be reencoded using ISTA/P: - With ISTA/P, run the retrofit ”Battery” (select battery capacity of the fitted battery). - Register additional battery replacements with the corresponding service function. Battery: battery capacity and battery type The battery capacity can be read from the label with the technical data. The safety information is found on the other label. The cycle-proof AGM batteries are used for especially heavy loads on the vehicle electrical system depending on equipment and requirements. Notice! Determination of state of charge after a battery replacement After a battery replacement, the vehicle must be left standing for at least 3 hours with its new battery. It is not possible to establish with any reliability the state of charge of the new battery until that time. Possible Check Control messages about total discharge of the battery are then no longer displayed.
