Installing an Antigravity Battery In My E92 M3

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I've been meaning to put a new battery in my M3 for a little while but after seeing our friends over at Gears & Gasoline install an Antigravity battery in their Honda Civic, I knew I had to get one for mine as well as one for the M3. Battery installs are supposed to be easy, right?

    Thanks for the shout out Matt! Just wanted to answer a couple of the questions you brought up as well. In regards to sizing a H6, H7, H8 are all the same in width and height and just get longer in length consecutively. Many of the European makes(BMW, Porsche) allow for multiple sizes and you'll generally be able to see the adjustable mounting cleat or hardwardware..but of course always easiest to ask...In regards to capacity and programming, if there isn't a lithium profile option then yes, go with AGM and the closest Ah capacity option, this profile should fit right into the parameters that best suit the battery and charging system for the car. If anyone has any other questions for us feel free to let us know at chad@antigravitybatteries.com

    The factory battery you took out is a AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) lead-acid battery. The battery you put in is Lithium. You might want to reconsider the registration process. Also, if you ever put a charger on the new battery, make sure it is set to "Lithium" and not "AGM". (BTW, I am the original owner of a 2008 M3 coupe with 18K miles on the odometer! Matt wouldn't like it because it is Grandpa Silverstone.)

    Hi Matt , Hmmm I don’t for sure Matt , I have heard in the forums that changing the AH size for the particular car can make things go quirky down the road, but then again you registered it telling the car you changed the ah capacity , this is to keep it safe from over charging the battery vs the 105 ah

  • @cellado7
    @cellado74 жыл бұрын

    Matt, with respect to capacity. For flooded and AGM battery’s only 50% of the stated capacity is usable as the voltage drops too low to crank beyond this point. For Li-Ion you can use nearly all of the capacity and still crank, so real world capacity for 60Ah Li-Ion is greater than a 90Ah AGM. HTH

    Simplest of jobs take the longest. I needed to change the gaskets on my door handle which was one big philips head screw. Should take no more than 5 minutes. Took a couple hours as there was a change to the door handle that isn’t noticeable without the gasket. It’s always something.

    In my experience, the E9x M3 batteries go out every 4-5 years if you do not put the car on a tenderer. I don't know if I would want to spend that much on a battery knowing that I already replaced the battery twice in my 10 years of ownership. I can see you feel my pain from lifting that huge battery out of the tiny hole in the trunk. It takes some muscle and finesse to wiggle it out.

    Hey Matt, you were thinking of a slim Jim to open a locked door unless you had a Ford back in the late 80s early 90s you could very easily unscrew the antenna without any tools and actually pop the lock with the cars antenna I could do it in seconds not to worry I only use my powers for good. Not 100% about the battery fob are you saying you can’t put it in the glove box because if the battery dies you can’t get in the car if that is the case will the battery fob fit in a hide a key just a thought battery is cool expensive but cool stay safe🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸👍

    Not sure you want to pick AGM as the battery type. Reason I say that is in the Porsche world picking AGM tells the ECU to up the voltage on occasion, especially when cold (not really a problem for you). The Porsche ECU has a setting for lithium, and that stops the high-voltages, that would cause damage in a LiFePO4 battery. if you ever find the battery momentarily cutting out, it is likely from too high a voltage (IIRC >15.2 V). If that ever happens, check the Porsche forums, Anti-gravity has some good info there. If memory serves me correctly, the ECU might call for a slightly lower cold charging voltage for a regular lead acid vs an AGM.

    I believe the H6 isn't the correct size for your car comparing it to the stock battery size. From what I see off of Antigravity's website, the H7 and H8 are also the same width of the H6 at 7 inches so an H7 or H8 would've probably fit better for your car and match up better with the stock mounting hardware.

    Traditional Lead-acid batteries can deliver half of their total capacity, and agm about 70%. You had a 92Ah installed, meaning 46Ah of usable energy if it was lead acid, or 64Ah if it was a AGM type. You should be good with a 60Ah lithium battery, because they can discharge at 100% of rated capacity.

    Something you need to know about alternators, They are not designed to charge a discharged battery. The alternator is meant to run the car. and to keep a charged battery topped off,A alternator is not a battery charger. If your battery dies, you need to charge the battery. If you try to charge a dead battery from an alternator, it full fields the alternator, shortening it's life. And if you want the best battery available regardless of cost, then you need to look at odyssey battery
