►Replacing a dead battery is a universal experience. In the fourth-generation M3, the battery replacement process is cleaner than most vehicles, thanks to a trunk-mounted battery. However, BMW's precise charging system control needs to know when a new battery has been installed to tailor its parameters to the new energy source. To do so, you'll need a few advanced tools and a bit of instruction. Don't worry; we've got you covered.

The biggest pain in the ass battery to replace. Also the way the battery is placed and the weight, it's hard to lift it out of that enclosure as well. I had to remove the battery and put it on a charger a couple of winters ago. It was a nightmare but nice howto video. Moral of the story, drive your car all year long and don't let the battery go down.

@fcpeuro have you been able to address the negative reviews recently with the battery?
Good job there. Do you have any recommendations for the quick-release external battery charger connection point? I have the same one as you do in the video for my E92. Also, are there any alternative scanning tools you would recommend? iOS or PC-based software?
Is there a trickle charger that works without having to be plugged in? I am thinking of a car that's parked outside in the winter for example.
Going Li-Ion Battery on my BMW E9X M3. It only weighs 18-25 lbs and can be shipped. It shuts off when the battery is low, so you have enough charge to start the engine. There is also a simple Battery Cutoff device if you store your car for months at a time. Connects to the existing battery terminals.

If there is a vent tube, then no reason to not use it just like it came from the factory.
Surprised you guys dont have an S65 rod bearing replacement video... maybe this car is the guinea pig?
