BMW is well made and won’t leave you stranded if you maintain them. They fall apart because people want the badge but don’t maintain them. I’ve had several BMW’s take me past 200k miles with just maintenance. If you have the skill ir money yo pay for the skill don’t ba afraid of them. You spot on. Bmw's are fairly reasonable priced here in Ireland and people buy them, particularly youngsters who never service them, drive the sh1t outta the car then when the timing chain snaps are something else, they go round saying bmw are crap. I drive a 2014 330d, it's a beast. I change the oil every 8000kms. Just recently had the gearbox oil changed even though bmw say its "lifetime" oil lol. The ZF gearboxes are made in UK and they themselves tell you to change the oil at 60 000 miles. Next job, intake manifold coming off for cleaning due to carbon build up. Amazing machines that are prone to breakage as described. Scotty is 100% right. The use of plastics and the excessive heat generated by the turbos make these a maintenance and repair nightmare. I paid over $50K and have had about $25K worth of repairs. Luckily I’ve done most of it myself. Pulling the engine and dismantling the front end to replace the oil pan GASKET. Insane amount of labor for a simple procedure. Wish this video existed in 2009 before I bought mine.

There is only one route to owning these cars. Buy new and sell three months before the warranty runs out. Here in Germany it's now becoming commonplace to sell them as soon as two years old. Taking the depreciation loss is less costly than repairing them. And repair them you will. BMW today, I'm sad to say, is nowhere close to the quality they had in the past.

Currently it has 201k miles and it still runs great!! I've only done normal routine maintenance.. The only problem it gave me was a bad fuel pump, but I was easily able to replace it in under an hour. I don't believe they're unreliable cars, I just think they are more pricey to maintain that some people just neglect them until they have problems

BMW Owner’s perspective. Car : 530i Touring (G31) New : March 2018 Bought : December 2019 with 7000 km on the clock. Mileage as on March 2024 : 77 000 kms Maintenance: All brake discs(rotors) and pads replaced by BMW for free under warranty for vibration during braking when car is at 60kmph when car was 18 000 km All brakes discs(rotors) replaced when car was drive 65 000 kms and this was paid by me ($2500 service costs). The vibration issue was solved temporarily but the real issue was damaged swing arms (worn out bearings). All discs/rotors, brake pads and front swing arms replaced again at 75 000 kms and BMW acknowledged their error and only charged me $1200 for the swing arms. Rest has just been routine service & maintenance with oil & filter changes which is super cheap if you buy the BMW service packs. I live in Europe. Average yearly maintenance costs comes to around $1000 per year and this is for the first 6 years of ownership. Is it high? I don’t think. Build quality? Its superb. When I sit on the plush Dakota Leather seats and enjoy the panorama roof, heads-up display, heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, superior sound insulation etc. every km driven is enjoyable and I have amazing memories on long roadtrips (including driving through the Alps and also the Furka Pass). Could I saved more money buying a Honda and Toyota? YES. Could I saved more money taking the public transport system? HELL YES.

The Toyota model is quite simple. Don't change much and don't try to do too much. They keep it basic. If you're not changing things every 5 seconds, you really can hone in on reliability. Heck, when did they finally make power windows standard? They are also more expensive new compared to their basic counterparts (Chevy/Ford/etc.). BMW and most German cars simply try to do too much. Sensors are everywhere to wow you. Over time, people spend as much or more with Toyotas. You can certainly drive a chevy and fix it cheaper for 500k miles with the money you pocket up front. There are always isolated cases of expensive failures, but parts like the 4L60 are one of the few transmissions I would trust a rebuild. I simply wouldn't say that on most Hondas or Toyotas. But if you truly prefer Toyota, etc., like the case in this video, just pay the extra for what you want up front. Same goes for BMW.

I have a 2002 530i that I bought a couple years ago. It's the coolest car I've ever had and it's required more work than any other car as well. I recently replaced the oil pan gasket, which required dropping the subframe for a $20 part. I do most of the repairs myself as taking it to a mechanic is too costly. This will probably be my last BMW. I've learned a ton about cars by working on my vehicle, but buying another bimmer scares the crap out of me knowing what I know now.

As a BMW owner (on number 4) you are spot on. My favorite was the 98 3 series that was before everything was plastic under the hood. Why do I still drive one? They are just great handling/performing cars and that straight six is like sewing machine smooth. When they work. I know what I have and I know that the maintenance is horrendous. Fortunately I am competent enough with a wrench that I can get a few layers in for some of the maintenance. My experience is that the plastic starts failing at 8-10 years old and, as you stated, mileage isn't the key factor. I will say this, to get to that no 6 spark plug take all that air inlet cowling of. Not so hard after you have done it 2-3 times. Also, if you need to change one coil go ahead and do all 6 with the plugs. For a BMW they actually aren't that expensive. Like you say, know what you are getting into if you buy a used BMW.

Yeah I had a 1990 320i with the M20, was beautiful to drive and easy to work on. Now I have a 2003 330ci sport with 180k miles and I've had to do a lot of preventative maintenance that the PO didn't do.😂 Luckily I can do most of it myself so it's not been a fortune. For instance I literally did the vanos oil seals yesterday with Beisan systems and new hardware from BMW, cost £120 in total and the car drives insanely well now. I can drive in a higher gear everywhere the torque is beautiful. But yeah as you say it's knowing what you're in for when you buy an older BMW!! Being prepared that you'll have to replace things. I did all new coils and plugs straight after buying the E46, the alternator died on me and now the headlights are giving me trouble 😩 but I wouldn't swap it for anything else, the way it drives and sounds is beautiful 🙌🏻

Well, in my opinion, it depends on the engine of the BMW. My dad has a 2004 E53, which has a 160 kW engine diesel and in the past 15 years, he only needed to change the turbo and the generator (not counting the normal service stuff, like filters and oil). I have had a 2006 E91 with the M47 engine for the past 4 or 5 years, and I literally only had to only change both of the thermostats. My E91 has 450k km, and my dad's E53 has almost 600k km driven. Both cars didn't cost much to take care of them. So when people say the BMW isn't as reliable, it's usually, at least in my country, because people tend to keep the broken parts broken until the very last second and then change it. Which leads to other problems appearing. And also, the M57 engine on the E53 is one of the most reliable engines in the world.

I knew it was the coil packs but I told her to order spark plugs along with the coil packs. 3 hours later her car wasn't shaking no more and was quiet like a brand new car. The bad - a few plastic pieces did broke with me not at fault. I thought BMW was a high end high quality car manufacturer but boy was I wrong when it took me 3 hours to change spark plugs and coil packs because of the plastic parts you have to remove when it would have taken me just 45 minutes to changed out the same parts on my Acura TL. Unless you have warranty I would highly avoid BMW.

Need a new alternator at 212k miles, $350 duralast will work if you can put in yourself but my specialist will charge $1125. Why? Bosch wholesale price $500 plus markup is $725 plus $400 labor, plus day in shop, plus a tow of my dead car at $150. So you are up to $1275 for an alternator. Plus is that volvo is not crazily complicated because its an old design but that model 7 is.

@@a4r0n25 I can imagine that. I also have an update. The BMW’s rear differentials went out the other week. Completely broke and the repair would be over $5000. It broke down December and this month and didn’t even have a chance. Most likely we’re just gonna sell it to the mechanic that worked on it before who likes working on European cars or send it to the junkyard and move on. $6k for how much we paid and another $2k in repairs just for the stupid air conditioning ($536) and the alternator ($1800+). The guy wanted even more money than 6k and wanted 11k total for that piece of junk! I saw in the Carfax report it was already having problems with the transmission at around 94,000 miles and had been maintained a lot under the first owner especially. I will give it one thing. It had a pretty powerful sounding engine but yeah. Endless money pit as we quickly found out. Sadly it was a “friend” that sold it to us and we know now he likely knew the car was on its last legs and was moving across the country anyway. Couldn’t even give it to my cousin as a work car either. It wasn’t even good for that! Thankfully we did end up getting a Ford F-150 under our company and the thing rides like a dream! Really big long back for all the appliances we deliver and install. Got our commercial insurance dramatically down too. Edit: the guy we got it from explained his side of the story today and he purchased it originally knowing that the computer was bad and wanted to fix it up. It had been sitting there for over two years with no activity, explaining why there had been a maintenance gap and got it relatively cheap and was gonna fix it up some more before selling it to us. He was here with us today and saw how much that mechanic was overcharging for all these repairs, and he has a mechanic he goes to for these BMWs that charge a helluva lot cheaper than these other BMW mechanics tend to charge. Don't know how that's possible, but yeah. We'll see what happens, but I still wanna sell it personally, but other folks at our company have different ideas.

Toyota has learned some bad ideas from operating in the US. I had a 2012 Tacoma, the only non wear item I had to replace in 200,000 miles was the power steering pressure hose...$50. 2018 Tacoma...the pressure hose, cooler, return line is all 1 piece. And it's $600

I’ve driven only BMW’s since the mid 1990’s…those older models were very reliable and didn’t have a single major expense on any of them, the ones I owned in the 2000’s were all under warranty but still never encountered a major expense or warranty claim…my last 2 I purchased used starting in 2008 and you are completely correct about the plastic parts…my current car I love, love the way it drives and the power, plus it’s a beauty, but there have been some annoying repairs, mainly 2 coolant leaks, one that cost $3k to fix because the plastic lines were located under the two turbos which had to be removed to fix a $100 part…then a few months later a $1k bill to replace a leaking coolant hose, because it was so hard to get to this was mostly labor…good thing it’s paid for and so much fun to drive or I would be looking to trade it in…however once this one dies I will probably be looking at a Toyota or Lexus suv…If you buy one used make sure it’s preowned certified or that it’s paid for…I will miss the way she drives though…

Bought a 2016 M5 with 40k miles less than one year ago. Already had to replace all 4 tires (which is a treat, given it doenst have a spare, so you get to tow your costly M5 when it has a flat). Then my shiny M5 didnt like to be towed and it messed up my transmission. I wont even tell you what that cost (hint - they dont fix them, they just replace them). Then my plugs and coils went out - another $1400. Those Honda Accords are looking very nice these days...

My dad owns an '81 of that same model. Those cars were built when Mercedes meant prestige, reliability, and longevity unlike the common plastic car brand it's become today such as BMW and Volvo. Now not only are these "premium" cars even more expensive to buy but even more so to maintain along with the inconvenience of going in for frequent repairs. Just not worth it any more with them. Only those "keeping up with Joneses" types buy/lease them or the unaware car buyer who's been lusting after one for sometime.

Oh sure I get the bug every now and then but common sense takes over (the special spark plug socket was a deal breaker for me). I’ve decided if I want performance the best route to go is a motorcycle. It’s hard for any car to beat the acceleration and handling of a sport bike. Thanks for speaking truth Scotty.

In short, take out your silver bullet shooter and silver crucifix and banish these value vortex distorters from your presence. Oh, yeah, then after the part replacement which caused you to have to move other parts which shattered when trying to angle back into place, the codes have to be cleared... Not shade tree mechanic friendly. Wave your silver crucifix and repel these.

Follow mechanic here, you could also do the same thing with the injectors. Your scan tool should be able to change the injector calibration numbers written in the engine computer, so all you would need is the seals and the compensation rings to swap injectors around for diagnosis. The injector calibration numbers are written on the injector itself, written in numbers only, in the 2x3 configuration. Also, take the cowl off next time. The cabin air filter is held on with 6x 8mm plastic threaded screws, and then the cowl itself is held on with 2x 8mm machine screws on each side. Pull towards you first, then lift to remove. You will have access to rear of engine then.
