I really hope you have been enjoying my love affair with Gouache and that going forward you would like to see more of it. I’ve really enjoyed the freedom and lack of pressure it allows. I don’t feel huge pressure to produce outstanding art each time, I can relax and let FUN take over.
I hope you get that message for yourselves too, that art can just be FUN.
Anyway, I hope you have a great day. Take care.

    jelly gouache was (as far as I know) originally made for art students (in i think japan or so) for exams where they don’t really have time to really mix and pour out normal gouache. plus it’s cheaper. also a thing to help the colors not dry out is to spritz it with water before closing it up and storing it. you can of course always rewet them but they might have a slightly different texture then

  • @muskndusk

    @muskndusk

    Also add a few drops of vegetable glycerine to each colour, stir well with a toothpick or something else very small. This helps to hold the water. Don't use too much otherwise the gouache will become transparent and shiny. To avoid mold, occasionally spritz with a mix of 10 parts water to one part alcohol. The FrugalCrafter has a vid about this.

  • @angiepen
    @angiepen2 жыл бұрын

    To answer your question -- yes, they will dry out. Keep the mixing tray on top and the lid locked when you're not using them, but they'll still dry over time. If you're not using them every day, you can open it up once or twice a week and spray them with water. You want a gentle, puff-puff-puff sprayer, not a heavy whish-whish-whish sprayer. :) They'll probably still dry out, some colors more than others (no clue why), so if a color gets dry enough to start cracking, add some water, leave it for a few minutes, then stir it with a popsicle stick, a pallet knife, something like that. (I have some cheap plastic pallet knives I got only to mix and re-wet thick paint.) It'll re-wet just fine, and stirring will get the lumps out of it, and there you go -- ready to use again.

    as long as you re wet them every so often and keep them closed they will take a long time to dry, i've had mine for like 3-4 years and i've only had some of them dry partially, but i put some water overnight, mixed them again the next morning and they were good as new

    Is this something that gives an edge up to the tubed version or is this an issue so easily solved it's not a hindrance?

  • @angiepen

    @angiepen

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@jasonspalding2929 I think it depends on the individual. If seeing drying, cracking paint really annoys and frustrates you, then you're better off with tubes. If re-wetting and stirring isn't a big deal to you, then jelly gouache will work fine. Also, if you're not going to use your gouache very often -- like less than once a week or so -- you're probably better off with tubes. IMO the main benefit of jelly gouache is that it's a great value. You get a *lot* of paint for the price, and with the 24-color set you also get the mixing tray and the brushes. If you're trying to stretch every dollar, jelly gouache is a good choice. I think, though, that if you're willing to pay a little more, the tube gouache is a bit better just because it takes less maintenance. Up to you which is best for your situation and POV. Oh, another benefit of the Himi jelly gouache is you can buy bags of refill paint. (I wasn't used to mixing gouache colors At All and went through my white stupid-fast :P but found I could buy more, which was great.) From what I've seen, with cheaper brands of tube gouache, the only way to get more of a color is to buy a whole 'nother set. Sort of like cheap vs. expensive markers or colored pencils or watercolors, where you can only buy single colors with the more expensive brands. Being able to buy a bag of whichever color you run out of, and refill the pot in your jelly gouache set, makes this even more convenient for a cheap set. So that's another consideration.

She gave the a spritz & stir with water & then put a very thin layer of medium on top. I’m not well versed enough in the ingredients of gouache or jelly gouache to know. my understanding of Jelly gouache is that it's cheaper, less waste b/c you can access the paint container easier, and the tray holds the paint well - keeps it moist longer. as well they reactivate well. but yeah, the paint of opening them is part of them too. i think i've only ever seen one youtuber open them without getting paint on themselves. glad you are enjoying the medium!

    With this kind of gouache its much easier to start with a watered down layer to block out your colors, and then go in with a thicker layer of the straight gouache, as you did with the test drawing of your pup! The paint lays easier and is easier to move around on thin base layer

    The Himi Gouache was created for art students in Asia. It's not for final showpieces but it's for practicing since art schools in Asia almost always require students to practice their motor skills every day. It's the reason why the Himi Gouache is bulky af because you're not supposed to lug it around but leave it on your school desk and whip it out when practicing. This gouache doesn't really dry in the school setting because it's being rewet when used regularly.

    Tip: to keep them wet, dampen a paper towel and place it ontop of the paints anytime you close it. If they do happen to dry up, a bit of water and mixing with a palette knife and leaving it to sit for a couple minutes makes them like new again. Ive had my himi set for over a year now and i genuinely love them.

    If you want to use more gouache or watercolors, you can buy a ceramic palette (they have flower shape to separate the colors) or use a ceramic white dish (if has partitions like the ones you put food on them, better). Plastic palette are awful to retain the water and pigment like you can see it on 9:00

    Such a cool Video! Every time you use gouache the paintings seem to be getting better. I've also been getting into gouache. Here are a few tips I've learnt that might help with anyone who could be struggling. 1) For the jelly gouache, when opening, try lifting up the edges all the way around before peeling the whole seal off. It's a lot less messy, especially with the harder to open tubs. 2) After opening all of the tubs, take a toothpick and give them all a stir (cleaning the toothpick between each colour). The texture of the paint will improve as some of the binder (that oily stuff) seems to separate out over time. A small spritz of water and a stir before you start painting for subsequent uses also helps. 3) To stop the pencil marks from "dirtying" the paint, take a kneadable eraser and use it to lightly lift off the excess graphite. there are plenty of KZread videos showing how to do this. this is also useful if you are using watercolour paint. 4) If you are struggling with moving the paint around, especially for washes, you may need a tiny bit more water on your brush. play around with the amount of water as each brand will behave slightly differently. Even watered down, gouache has incredible coverage. Practice and learn how the paint behaves with different amounts of water and find the "sweet spot". Use an old rag to control the water on your brush. 5) For building up layers, start with more transparent layers and add less and less water for subsequent layers. This will help you to control the reactivation of the lower layers. 6) The paint disappearing on your pallet is just the consequence of using a plastic pallet. You can lessen the effect by taking the rough part of a kitchen sponge and roughing up the surface a bit. If gouache and watercolour are media you will be using a lot, a ceramic pallet (or just a ceramic plate if you are cheap like me) will make a world of difference. It's not necessary by any means, but it will make your painting colour mixing experience far more enjoyable. You can also spray a metal pallet with enamel paint. Hope this helps anyone.

    Actually if you want to avoid pencil marks.. switch from graphite to color pencil.. erasable color pencils (which yes are different from regular color pencil) are great for sketching as they don't smudge or bleed into your medium when you put something on it.. they can also be erased very easily and if you is the red kind of erasable color pencil (the sketch will barely show if you don't)

As for drying out - yes, if you don't use them for a while, but you can easily reactivate the entire cup by adding water and stirring after a while. I've done it to mine, and they still work nicely. I love the way you share your technique and any challenges that come your way with the art supply. Would love to see you do more with other mediums and even multimedia. PS I'm partial to the kiba one but both are amazing works of art. Great job.

    It's a solid piece, and you like it and the whole process, so that's all that matters. I do enjoy hearing about even the slight differences in the delivery of the paint.

    Love watching your excitement with this medium. I like your art any way you do it but it's neat to hear someone be excited about it. On a teasing note, I found it funny you're repping Marvel on your shirt and hat then drawing/painting a DC character.

    I’ve seen some gouache and watercolor artists take a kneaded eraser and ROLL it over the pencil to help prevent the extra graphite from discoloring the paint too much and limit what shows through.
