    Yup, had to skip 2nd for a year or so in my Mustang until I could get the 3650 rebuilt. Didnt help that I was 18 and working barely above minimum wage.

    Preventative maintainance. He has the means and due to his circumstances, the better thing for him to do was replace what he saw fit at once instead of having to trek the distance amd go through all the hassle mpre often to address what will eventually fail or break. I honestly can't fault him 🙂

    As a long term owner. Service it once a year and most importantly, use it. The cars are so much better with regular use. Very reliable, I took mine to Italy last year. 1600km trip, did not even check the oil. Starts and goes. Still looks like a spaceship, even today! Enjoy in good health Doug.

    I just drove by Evans Automotive today. They are very well known here in Columbus for taking care of exotic cars. I had a friend with a small collection of vintage Corvettes and he swore by Evans. He gave me their business card when I bought a Corvette for myself.

    I use to watch Doug pretty religiously back in early 2017ish till like 2020 but you know things happen life changes but a couple days ago his Cybertruck review came up on my feed and it was like catching up with an old friend 😄 Glad to see he’s still getting to drive and review cars that a lot of people won’t ever get a chance to see. His attention to detail is always top notch compared to other’s in his class

    @whpony96 How would you work on a 40 year old Lamborghini Countach? Moreover, is not reasonable to confine the world of classic car owners to mechanics with the skills, tools, and physical conditioning needed to maintain them, especially with antique exotics like this. Some of us view cars as a collector item, like a work of art, rather than a job or hobby (without disparaging those who do it as a labour of love).

    Poster car as a kid! The countach and the ‘63 Stingray are the most perfectly designed vehicles ever in my opinion. White on white is the perfect combo, but this black interior really looks sharp as well. I have been fortunate to see a countach up close and on the road..pictures and video does not do it justice! I’m in my mid ‘40’s and seeing one now I am still in awe as I was when I first saw one as a 5 year old. Congrats Doug, the Carrera GT, Ford GT and now the Countach is quite the trifecta of super cars! Enjoy and put as many miles on them as you can!

    completely agree. the first gen is the one to have if any. This model is ugly as sin with all those overdone wheelarches and the stupid wing, this is reall an ugly vehicle whereas the first one is stylish, truly aerodinamic an plain pretty.

    Glad you enjoy it, Doug. I think it will be fairly reliable. The problem isn't the reliability of maintained properly, the problem is that all the repair costs are about x5 or x10 of a normal car. But if you've budgeted it, then you're getting what you want and you'll be very happy with it.

    Doug has a passion for fast cars that's very evident. My three hobby cars are not in the same class, but coupled with two more DD's it's a constant thing to keep everything updated, charged, insured, maintained, and still have them be an enjoyable experience. The best time to enjoy them is when your young like Doug. As you age you have the money to make the deals but the pleasure behind the wheel dimisihes slowly as you fade away. YOLO

    This is actually a good lesson for someone that sees a great deal on an originally expensive car. The used price tag might look appealing but it’ll need original price tag worth of care. Someone with Doug’s means doesn’t have to worry about it, but your average joe will. Everything he listed individually costed more than I paid for my project car lol. Yikes.

    That s why it's so common to see clapped out BMW's and Audis in some areas like big cities. Someone thinks they're getting a killer deal on a sweet ride, and don't take repairs into consideration... That car that originally cost 80k isn't going to have Kia repair costs, so they just drive it into the ground. I used to see so many beat up, smoking old luxury cars with big wheels on them that looked like they came out of a junkyard.

    Glad Doug informed me of Evan’s. I got a Hellcat last year and didn’t know of any good quality shops to take it to around town. Definitely don’t want the dealer touching it unless it’s warranty work.

    I bought a grand national about 5 years ago. Dream car of mine. Needed a total brake overhall, body mounts, electrical work, a lot of other things. You know what, love that car. It's a joy to drive.

    That's often true. The amount you spend for an old Mercedes or a car like this is often the same. Parts are often about the same. Labor isn't cheaper. But the Merc isn't really worth that much even after you do all this. I leaned that lesson with classic cars I rebuilt.

    Did Doug see Harry's Garage (Metcalfe) getting his Countach transmission rebuilt at Iain Tyrrell's Classic Workshop last year? They each did multiple videos vlogging the whole process. Including film of the incredible method for removing everything from the inside of the vehicle with a special purpose built hoist.

    Honestly the entire transmission job cost isn't nearly as bad as I would have suspected all things considered. With how vintage, low production, and just genuinely rare a countach is, I feel like any other service shop would have easily slapped $10k labor premiums on that job.

    I work at an Autobody shop and it is actually common for headliners to be installed before the windshield. When we remove a headliner, we have to first take the front or rear glass out. The headliner has to slide out from somewhere.

    Depends. My 1980 Lancia Gamma needed a headliner replacement but the windscreen and rear glass are glued in place, like many Italian cars from the 70s. Removing the glass means breaking it... had to get creative!

    @@dm5374 I did that on my 204 lately. I needed new seals for the windshields (the original was from 72'). With shipping (a very complex one and hard to find parts) - around 200$ for the rear seal and around 80$ for the front seal. The windscreen stayed intact. The upholester charged 1200NIS (around 350$) for the headliner and pillars, and the glazier charged another 800 nis (around 220$) I made a video about that on my Hebrew channel @knufia

    Thanks for the itemized recap. I have an older 911, and yes - I’ve had the occasional five-figure service bill because it’s an old car. Ultra-reliable, but you can either replace ancient fuel and oil lines now or wait for them to fail. It’s a privilege to drive a classic sports car, and you have to be at peace with the costs.

    Your Countach service cost three times as much as my last car purchase, but the Countach is a truly iconic car. It's also a 40 year old exotic Italian supercar so running costs are never going to be cheap. Hope you have amazing fun driving the hell out of it!

    Similar experience with a Mercedes SL500. Paid a fortune for service at a good shop. Then had a recurring issue with that crazy Mercedes Active Body Control system. Paid $2000 for a repair on it and got the warning light back in a couple of months. Fast forward, I extensively researched on yt and chat rooms, Did the repair myself...three years and counting and still operates perfectly. All work on that car is done by yours truly now and love every bit of it. Car runs great!

    The thing that really makes that Countach extra special, is it is a head turning icon. It might not be the most aerodynamic, it might not be the fastest or the hardest cornering or the best braking but everybody wants to look at it everybody wants to see it everybody wants to ride in it and for anybody born before 1985 they want one. Well... most Car Guys anyway.

    Presumably, pull-the-engine service on that car is akin to a timing belt on a Land Cruiser, or head gaskets on nearly every vehicle: The disassembly labor is so extensive -- and expensive -- that you replace EVERY CONSUMABLE YOU PASS on the way back out.

    As an old person who remembers when the Countach was first issued, and as a person who loved and lusted after it, and as a person with no drive, ambition, goals and the like, and thus a person who would never buy one, I appreciate hearing your stories of buying it, using it and fixing it. Plus even if I bought one, I would be afraid to drive it on the street because it would be a crime against mechanical art to damage such a car - or even get it dirty.

    I just bought a stock Hudson and drove it 800 miles to my home. I found out it needs a coil and some radiator hoses and a new bulb for the passenger side courtesy light. It was an epic drive, some of it over gravel and rough roads. The car cost about a seventh of the Countach service.

    The rose joints (it's race car tech, not designed with longevity in mind) on these cars need replacing @ least every 10 years or so. They are critical in maintaining optimum suspension geometry through out the full suspension travel.     Although it’s an expensive and rare car, it’s still just a car. And at the end of the day these older cars are pretty simple. It really comes down to a lot of people with a lot of money only buying from people who cater to other people with a lot of money (“EVERYONE with a vintage Lambo uses them”). I’ve known some very, very wealthy people (far wealthier than Doug) and THIS is how they ALL operate. Companies like Evans are in the club and they milk it (as I would if I were them).

    @@wmansir The car has a combination sump for both the transmission and engine, which needs 4.5 gallons of oil. With a premium Italian synthetic like Agip ENI at $18.95 per liter, that ends up being more than $330 just for the oil if you were doing it yourself.

BTW: $27000 for the first oil change in a bugatti veyron. Stick to driving your chevy malibu or civic with a fart can.
