I wish Gibson would do different pickups on their CS LP’s besides the 498T and 490R. Recently replaced those in my Demo shop Silverburst with a classic 57 + in the bridge and custom bucker in the neck. LOVE THEM!!

FYI...the 2013 SG Deluxes (the ones with the flame tops and Bigsby's) also have those style inlays. I have one of these and it's a great guitar but they were only made one year and there's not a lot of info out there about them. Documenting one of those would be great for a future show...

Salutations Austin! Very nice Les Paul Custom! I just picked up a 2016 Gibson 1950’s Tribute Gold Top in the satin finish, and it too has no binding, and it has the same open coil pickups in it as are in this particular Les Paul Custom, which surprised me, because I thought it would have the 1957 pickups instead. I just oiled the fretboard and am putting new strings on it tomorrow. I just has the standard two pickups but sounds nearly identical. That one is a beauty! Thank you for posting these videos! Please have an excellent and awesome day! ☀️✨🎸

I dig unbound boards. I've got a 2011 LP 50's Tribute with P90's, which I originally got to save my R6 from gigging, that has no binding & it plays great. I'm glad to see our boy finally find a guitar with a decent set of 490's too. Most of my guitars are from the 90's, meaning they're the pups I'm most used to from Gibsons & I dig them so I've never understood why so many guys diss them. I guess it's like anything mass produced - you get good sets & bad ones.

This is why I watch your show- the coverage of unusual Customs and Made To Measure guitars. That one sounds pretty good, except for the bridge pickup which is too hot for me! I think it would look cool with 5-ply B-W-B-W-B binding on the top and 3-ply on the back. (note the negative black-and-white compared to a regular Custom). Contrast is the name of the game! Gold hardware too, including pickup covers. But since it was somebody’s Made-To-Measure, not mine-it is what it is! I do like the White Sparkle finish, though. And not to be too pedantic, there’s no such word as “blent”-the past tense of “blend” is “blended”.

That’s a high end player’s guitar. For that guitar to end up being owned by an individual that won’t be taking her out to play on a fairly consistent basis would and should be an absolute criminal offense, and I’m talking felony status. It would be a unimaginable waste. Like a person having the most beautiful and mesmerizing singing ability that takes a vow of silence…. But the bindingless construction is obviously a HUGE, not so subtle clue that she was built with FULL intent and the purpose of being played to its fullest possible extent. Not at ALL meant to be in a storage or closet for investment purposes, but plugged in, played, soaking up cigarette smoke, getting hit with random objects, bumping into the edges of speaker cabs and mix boards, with the optional application of a unique sticker or stickers that (if wielded by an individual that happens to go far, will make it easily recognized and more iconic as that individual’s personal weapon of choice by even casual fans. In fact, it’s pretty easy to tell that her finish, while really cool in normal lights, is going to be drawing a lot of people’s attention from how her finish will be interacting with all the various stage lighting and effects (I can only imagine the possibilities and personally if I applied a sticker, it would have to be black light reactive as I also hope the pearl color would also glow). She is DESTINED and meant to be someone’s constant travel companion, endure countless string changes, and (even tho I personally think she was perfectly created) her owner should have no second thoughts of using whatever is on hand they have to install little unique personal mods to accommodate individual needs that might not look pretty, but function reliably. Guitars shouldn’t be intended to have their “value” accessed by cosmetics or a certificate of “authenticity” but from the combination of possessing undeniable great tone and the resulting quality of attention of her builder focusing on what will result in making the guitar feel as if it is nearly effortless to play and simultaneously invoke that elusive spark of inspiration to instantly manifest upon any that starts playing a specific instrument... At least, that is my opinion of what should separate a $10,000 guitar from a $300 instrument. I don’t care how a guitar looks, if you start to play it and instantly feel that unexplainable but undeniable energy of creativity and inspiration that simultaneously makes you not want to stop playing, typically having to be forced away (even if politely) making the first thoughts after being separated desperately trying to figure out, IF owned by a friend, IF that friend is willing to sell it to you and (applies to friend or store) if you can somehow afford it/what is capable of being sold that you can part with to have enough to afford it (with some serious contemplation if you REALLY NEED 2 kidneys…) and if unable to purchase it, likely be inflicted with some degree of lasting effect from the shock of separation from the instrument. Actually, just realized that these unique, unassuming priceless treasures affect players with INSTANT addiction, complete with a POWERFUL withdrawal if unable to play them. the withdrawal can manifest with many different levels of severity that can cause symptoms like: 1) having constant dreams of playing the instrument that vary in frequency from every dream then on to happening randomly but can be lifelong 2) if was sold to another, developing a lifelong instant mental “switch” where INSTANT depression, sadness, and regret take hold whenever reminded of the instrument that “got away”… this can also be a lifelong affliction. 3) manifesting an anger that can range greatly in severity if discovering the desired instrument was destroyed, and can even result in multiple players developing an anger withdrawal response in circumstances if the instrument was destroyed intentionally by one of multiple players that are all enemies but also all addicted to/desperately trying to acquire ownership/access to the same instrument. Often occurs as a desperate final act of a cornered player that has possession but can clearly see that defeat is unavoidable and approaching fast and have a narcissistic personality that refuses to let “their instrument” be in anyone else’s possession. This is ultimately a situation where everyone suffers, but the player that actually destroyed it will eventually realize the true gravity of their actions (they are at fault for ultimately destroying a truly unique 1 in a million, priceless tool that would have still been played by others after his time and would have also experienced that spark, leading to beautiful masterpieces being made that would not otherwise manifest, or in other words, they destroyed a priceless instrument and countless future beautiful musical masterpieces also.) they often are the worst of tortured souls. 3) a lifelong obsession where the instrument is constantly brought up and how things could have gone differently with entire scenarios thought up that would have changed circumstances to have worked out. This can vary in severity from being a mild annoyance to friends, family, and coworkers, to causing alienation from others purposefully cutting off contact, to full on institutionalization if obsessed to actually tracking the instrument down, attempting to steal it, especially by ANY means, but getting caught. If unable to obtain ownership, next best possible situation is if owned by a close friend or family member that will let you play when visiting. There are others, as I suffer from a few myself, which is why I tend not to play random instruments unless I’m comfortable that if it happens to be such an instrument, I’m fully prepared and capable of actually obtaining it or have easy access to it daily if I want. However, these instruments tend to have already been discovered before me and has praise from multiple individuals that seems like it shouldn’t apply to it and might even have a bidding war attached that has gone far above what that model typically goes for…

I have a 2003 swamp ash studio. beautiful guitar but that thing is a heavy beast. I love the look of the custom but I don't think my frail guitarist spine could take the full thickness.

Trog. As an old timer who got his first Gibson in 1981 -82' (was a long time ago) ,& a hardcore Jimmy Page nut who was obsessed w/ Gibsons till I sold my LP standard in 84' for a Boogie body Charvel/Jackson Superstrat to tried and move into 80's metal .. I really appreciate your scientific research you put in to documenting & testing these important historical , Durable goods, Americana musical instrument investment commodities. Just curious. Have you ever delved into Hartley Peavey's early attempts at guitar building using laser tooling for precise firearm nano -tolerance grade pieces? Just wondering .

I remember when the T-60 came out and stores were pushing them. Very original guitars AND cases at the time and a bargain to this day.

At 1:45 it looks like the frets have been scalloped out slightly.

That is a very nice LP. The only thing I don't like is the middle pick-up.

Good semi deep dive... Nice fretboard and headstock...shame about the rest... finish better suited to a $600 Supro 1572SW Belmont Single Pickup from the Americana Series. Enjoyed. regards.

Not surprised on the 7k price. I was quoted 7.5k for a yellow sparkle top black sides & back. Matching headstock. Chambered. And that was just the quote ya know...

I like it but having binding on just the headstock makes it look weird. They should've had no binding at all. Sounds great though.
