I'll forever be grateful to have this one in my collection. While "The Les Paul" is typically considered to be the cream of the crop when it comes to 70s Les Pauls - occasionally there are some hidden gems made for artists or trade shows exhibitions that can give them a run for their money. I've never seen a 1974 Les Paul Custom 20th Anniversary look this good EVER. The natural finish and awesome woodgrain and flame is a deadly awesome combination. You've Never Seen a 1974 Gibson Les Paul Custom 20th Anniversary Like This One.
Edit Oct 27 2023 - I've been messaged by someone who claims to have purchased one of these new! His also has the G in the control cavity and is in a natural off-set 2 piece flame maple top with 3-piece figured maple neck but his has the then-new Schaller M6 Style tuners. Time will tell if more of these surface! Serial 403391

You know in Pulp Fiction when Vincent Vega finds the briefcase in kitchen cabinet of the kids eating Big Kahuna burgers for breakfast? Then he tosses the case on the counter, opens it up and this warm golden glow illuminates his face as he gazes down, seemingly in a trance at what he's just laid his eyes on? Tarantino has never specified just what exactly was in there, but now we finally know. Seriously, what a phenomenal top - that's like winning the lottery.

Amen to that! I don't normally geek out over Les Paul tops but the second that case opened I let out such a dramatic "woa". Seriously, that's just absurd. It kinda reminds me of this one time in high school I took a half 'eaten' gold butterscotch disc candy out of my mouth and put it under the microscope in science class and it was this fascinating series of golden lines and squiggles that was mesmerizing. This top looks almost exactly like that, like a macro close-up shot of a butterscotch disc. The way that top moves under the light is really something else. What an incredible score, definitely one of the most impressive looking tops I've ever seen on this channel!

Having a guitar that you can't use is something I'll never understand. But I'm not a collector so to each their own. I've always seen guitars as a tool for musicians and like a tool, I can't imagine owning a hammer and be afraid to use it.

I agree with you to some extent. However I feel that instruments are a work of art just as much as they are a tool. Some guitars are just so beautiful that they deserve to be well preserved, not necessarily locked up behind glass, but not played to death either. A guitar like this one is irreplaceable, and I applaud his efforts to share them with the world so we can admire it too.

There was a mint '74 ebony V for sale on Reverb for $15,000.00, and as sweet as it was I thought that price was ridiculous, but I guess it was sold as it's gone now. Pretty sure you paid even more than that for this beauty, but man, collectors just driving the price up for the sake of having it instead of playing it makes no sense to me. Still, that's an incredible find, Austin. Congratulations.

I've owned a natural top 76 custom since 1984 (you can hear it on my videos), so I can understand how much you love this one. Mine has no flame at all, but it always has been beautiful, and I would never consider getting rid of it. I did have Mike Lull (rest in peace!) refret it and plek it in 2019. He also swapped in some 500k pots which opened up the guitar tremendously, increased the output and made it less dark.

I guess the pots from that era have been known to be 300k or less, especially from the Nashville factory. He explained how all my signal was dumping to ground. I saved the old pots but would never reinstall them myself. I played the guitar over 30 years with that dark cloud holding it back 🤣

Funny how many people associate George with the rosewood telecaster considering his general dislike of it. Didn't use it very often after the rooftop concert, gave it to Delaney Bramlett. George really liked the strat and les paul though, Rocky and Lucy were kept around and used for the rest of his career. It might be neat to see the Gibson Lucy reissue on the show.

What would be nice is if the amount of attention being given to the your channel eventually lead Gibson to create a combination model, marrying the cosmetics of this particular model with the reissue specifications from models predating when Gibson was part of Norlin. One would get the best of both worlds as a result.

Love your show. I'm just a poor boy in NE Washington. My Dad turned me on to Al Di Miola when I was kid as well as well as having the Frampton Comes Alive LP in my collection. Always wanted a Les Paul and found one finally a few years back. Just a 1996 Studio but painted all "Alpine White" including the back of the "50's" ebony fretboarded neck. PUs were not stock but looked cool being zebra but I ugraded them to Fralin Pure PAF zebra with gold screws to match the gold hardware. After I bought is guitar ($800) the case sat open in my house and it stank like cigarettes. That eventually disappeared but the effect the smoke had on the guitar was amazing and made it literally the color of butter. The finish checking was also amazing for a cool vintage looking "player guitar". The other Gibson is a 73-4 EB3 cherry which I bought in the late 80's and foolishly modded. Pawned to a friend a couple years later. Fast forward 30 years and found him on Facebook and bought it back. It was a couple year project working with my luthier since it was a back burner bass I didn't have much respect for, but after returning it to stock it has become my No 1 Player for bass gigs. Mudbuckers rule! Love to see all the special "Dream" guitars you have in your collection. Just subscribed.

Watching my dad play Gibson acoustic guitars for most of my life, I love Gibsons. I look back and wish I had him teach my to play 50 years ago when I was a kid. My siblings and I grew up in a musical, country, finger picking family, (my older sister was a singer who went to college on a music scholarship and was in the music departments traveling band and a soloist for them), and I miss dad playing guitar at all the family gatherings. I didn’t come into my voice until my 40’s, and I love the old crooner songs. I just wish I had learned to play when I had the chance.

I have a 20th anniversary too. I got it when I was 17 in Cambridge UK 1988. Funnily enough at the time the shop had two the same, Tobacco finish. Only mine had fine tuners on at the bridge I can't remember if the other guitar had the same bridge. It has been well used and cared for. The 20th on the fret has long been worn off although you can still just about see it, its had a fret change too. My guitar seemed to be of a higher speck than any others that I have seen. The bridge was definitely original and not an after market that one guy once suggested. The tuning pegs and the bridge are both made in Germany of the same material and top quality. The volume and tone are also much higher speck than most of these guitars. I'm getting older now so at some point it will need to find a good home I hope this happens as its such a lovely guitar. The case is beaten up though and the handle broke off so it has a make shift handle that has surprisingly lasted longer than the original. It was only meant to be temporarily. I have been a pro for years and this was my main guitar until I let it rest at home to be used only at home. They are great guitars and better than any other Les I have played or owned. I also have a Les Paul Professional that again seems to be the only one that has the cigar shaped adapter that enables it to plug into an amp because of the Low impedance pick ups. Which would suggest that all the guitars without this adapter have been rewired meaning they are no longer Low impedance.

The gold plating is in amazing condition for a guitar that old. I like the pancake/sandwich body construction. I think it adds a bit of extra interest to the side of the guitar. The great thing about natural finishes is the grain of the wood makes every one unique. Even non-flame or non-birds-eye tops can have an interesting pattern.

That guitar blinks like a neon sign when you walk the light across it. Could you ever do an episode where you interview a wood expert who can show us where in a tree a piece of wood like that comes from and how it happens in nature, because it seems very rare. Someone at Gibson saw that piece of wood and knew exactly what to do with it. 1974...if the builder or someone in the manufacturing process was young when that guitar came through then maybe they'd remember? It is extremely unusual!

Salutations Austin! Really exceptional twentieth anniversary Les Paul Custom, with an exclusively beautiful top. I looks and sounds great! It’s an awesome find, for sure! It’s in remarkably good condition for a nearly forty (40) year old guitar, it has been taken of very well all of these years. I would like to find an Epiphone or Gibson Les Paul Custom in a similar finish and with beautiful wood grain such as this example, preferably, without a pick guard, because it would be a shame to cover up that magnificent wood grain. Thank you for posting these videos! Please have an excellent and awesome day! ☀️✨🎸

Being a custom furniture Builder I can tell you that natural top has "Quilting" layers to it rather than a "Flame" top. Absolutely beautiful either way. Love it. I like the Yeti myself.

If you don't like the pickguard covering up the quilted maple top, get a clear pickguard made for it and throw the original in the case.

Super cool! I've got a 1974 20th Anniversary Custom LP in natural too, but it doesn't have that flame, and the neck is mahogany. Hard to find many other naturals around.

Maple neck and pancake body on the same guitar, pretty rare. I have a '71 Deluxe with mahogany neck and pancake body, my friend in school got a brand new Deluxe in '77 with a maple neck and NOT a pancake body. In the '70s and '80s I used to sneak into the jam nights and most of the older guys had recent model maple necks.

I generally do not like the Natural finish on LPs, but that one is gorgeous and special. That Brazilian Rosewood top is gorgeous as well, but I'm certain that both of those would be way out of my price range if they were for sale. Those are definitely keepers, though.

I know the top is the star of this episode, but those tones… I’m starting to wonder if T-top pickups might be the way to get the classic 70's rock sound that’s in my head.
