With the variety of tones available in either stereo or mono, I bet that's a fun guitar. Another quirky piece of Gibson history, but encased in a beautiful body! 😍 Great find
I like how Trogly was so casual about how he just talked to Pat Smear.
The "Bowling Pin" is an all strike 300 game!! The sound is amazing, I had Marshall left , and Fender right; when it was balanced in the room, right channel was dominant. BTW, "Chasing Sound is a YT vid. worth watching; all about Les Paul the man. Great info, guests, and humor. He was a tinkering addict and this is the kind of stuff he dreamed up. Genius. Trogly out did himself!! 🐉🐲🦖

Very interesting guitar. Alex Lifeson has always been a fan of stereo to fill out/mix his sound in various combinations.
I really really like the idea and possibilities of the double output and mixing. The guitar looks good and sounds even better. That would be a keeper for me.
Having the stereo split helps when you mix because it's the same performance times two. It sounds beautiful. This guitar has so many sound oppportunities, the stereo is wonderful.

Use a splitter? Record to two tracks?
@davidsharp3110
Жыл бұрын
@@halcooper3070 It's not the same. A splitter just splits the mono output of one or more pickups. Stereo is getting the signal from each individual pickup. If you listened to the Trogly audio on this demo, it's discrete stereo. A splitter will never do that ever.
@halcooper3070
Жыл бұрын
It doesn't need to. Thus why stereo guitars never caught on. If you want to blend two pickups, same performance, you have the middle position, and two volumes, and a splitter, like every performer who uses two amps does.The amps take care of the rest. Stereo guitar gains you nothing, recording or live.
@halcooper3070
Жыл бұрын
@davidsharp3110 unless we're suggesting everyone from.SRV on down just weren't smart enough to have their tech add an input and a blend, instead of using a splitter as they did?
Fade to Black would sound absolutely insane on this guitar. This was a really AWESOME demo, I love what that guitar can do!
I used to use a dual set up for gigs back in the 90's, with my old Orange OR120 & an even older AC 30. The sound was awesome. I had twin Marshall stacks either side of the stage, one for each amp & it added a whole other layer of sound onto the band. Still got the OR (never part with it, favourite amp ever) but the poor Vox died an unfortunate death when our bass player pissed on it during post gig shenanigans one night. Killed my amp & the band lol. Ah, good times, good times.
Definitely a keeper. Love it. Sounded awesome on the "Ten years gone" Come on man get that museum goin so I can see this stuff in person.
If you want to play through 2 amps “the Framptone” is a noiseless A/B switch. Used to Run a duel rectifier and a VOX AC30 when gigging. Sound was incredible. That’s a cool rare Norlin. I’m surprise how well it was preserved!! The ALL maple gives it a brighter sound for sure.

I thought Frampton's tone was from an old Ampeg or 2. Depends on the era I guess.
I picked up a Rickenbacker bass recently which is essentially the bass version of this setup. Messing around with two amps is heaps of fun!
Love these oddball guitars. Reminds me of my old Sears/Kay Effector Les Paul with the bolt on neck and special effects controls (what an awesome built in distortion on that thing!)

It's not the guitar that unlocks the fun - it's how much other "gear" you have available to have fun with!
Love his one Trog! You can really hear the difference with the true stereo. I really like what's going on there. Some of the best tones I've heard you get. Really good Zep vibes, and I have never really liked that Bluesbreaker amp, but what you have going on there is great. Throughout this video I have come to really dig the look of that control panel too, probably because it sounds so good! Congrats on that one. Worth the high price!
I'm surprised Gibson doesn't use pancake bodies more. I think they'd work especially well on Epiphone SGs, since they wouldn't have to use those figured veneers everyone seems to hate.
Congrats on a great find!!!!. I love it what an "experimental" '70s classic. Keep up the great work 🎸👍
Such a cool Les Paul. Love the woods and the stereo wiring. Beautiful guitar 🎸👍 I want it 😍
My favorite setup is a stereo EQ pedal that has two separate channels into two similar amps. Very similar effect as to what this guitar does. Definitely a rare version of an early Norlin guitar. Killer find, Austin!
So happy to have found this video. I own the same guitar. Bought in 1995 at an auction. Original receipt is from Chicago Musical Insrument in Kalamazoo Mich. Special instructions states "gtr is in lab" Serial number is 673648. However headstock does not have " made in usa". Order date 3/2/72.
I really appreciate what you’ve done to make this channel What it is Austin and where it has brought too you. Keep it up brother love the Gibson 💯
Salutations Austin! Really interesting and beautiful Les Paul Custom! There are a variety of ways that guitar can be used to optimise it’s stereo potential, in a recording studio setting each pickup can be routed through it’s own channel and then those tracks can then be manipulated in post production, however, running through two completely different amplifiers is essentially how it was originally designed to be used, and gives you the most flexibility in live performances, which is how I would use this guitar, and I would have a variety of effects units for each channel that would be set up to optimise the sound of the each pickup. Gerry Garcia frequently used a stereo equipped guitar to contribute to the “Wall of Sound” and to get a fuller sound out of his guitar. There are so many different possibilities with a guitar such as this, and as you continue experimenting with it, you will gain additional ideas 💡. Thank you for posting these videos! Please have an excellent and awesome day! ☀️✨🎸
The bowling pin looks like Bob Belcher.
This was a good purchase, considering your future plans (the museum). Aside from the 'stereo' aspect it's just a beautiful old 1970's Les Paul, so it's well well worth having.
I remember playing one of these. I had a music teacher in Junior High that had one of these it sounded awesome. He loved it. He was a 50 year old Jewish blues man back in 1993 NYC public school. He was a short guy too who looked a lot like Paul Simon, and I remember that the guitar looked huge on him. We played Tears in Heaven on stage together for the school talent show. I would love to see a video of that.
Maple Pancake! yum!
This is my favorite of your funky 70’s guitars. Really sounds fantastic. I really think this is a useful feature for an electric guitar.
One idea....Try to get a spare custom scratch plate in Black 3 Ply, Black Pearloid, and Gold Brass. You can send a template of the original scratch plate and they can custom cut and drill the duplicates.

Pickguard Planet - they could definitely help out! When I bought my Les Paul Signature (offset 335), it was missing the original pickguard. Luckily, they had a template and I was able to get a great looking repro.. Otherwise it would've taken me ages to find one, hoping an original showed up, if ever. 👍
Wowee! That thing is absolutely beautiful! I just love Norlin era Gibson's. 😍 Wish my Les Paul Signature had that color instead of the gold top. It's too bad they didn't just use a single TRRS jack instead of 2 mono jacks.. I assume they were invented by the build date, surely. 🤷🏻♂️ That's awesome you got a direct line to Pat and that his guitar is only a couple away, serial number wise. 😎 Too cool!
Austin, I'm an old audiophile from the 70s, so I think I'm qualified here. That uppermost pot marked "VOL" is what I would call a "BALANCE" control, similar to what you'd find on a consumer stereo system of the time. It's basically the same thing as a pan pot, but you only have the two pickups in the mix.
Great video. I love the blend control during the sound demo! That is amazing.
What a super cool find Trogly! Beautiful wood and abalone inlays on this gorgeous guitar and love the stereo sound and it seems like it has tons of possibilities ....sounds Great!
Awesome guitar and demo!
I’ve never run my Ric 4003 through two amps, but I’m going to try it now. Some very cool sounds out of that LP. Good video Trog. Thanks
The stereo wiring was purely to record two tracks in the time it took to record one. It was a money saving exercise on the recording artist’s part and Gibson decided to provide the feature at the point where it was popular
@davidsharp3110

I disagree, this opens up so many options in recording and live. Having the stereo split helps when you mix because it's the same performance times two. It sounds beautiful. If someone is in a hurry to record two channels to save time, then they are wasting the creative process. This guitar has so many sound oppportunities, the stereo is wonderful.

@r33th you think they didn't have splitters at the time? People played (and play) through multiple amps all the time, without stereo in the guitar.
Excellent video and review. This guitar sounds fantastic. It would be tons of fun to experiment with. Thanks for the awesome video Trogly. Another example of why yours is easily my favorite guitar channel on YT.
Ten years after sounded great on that guitar! I like this guitar. It's 1 year too old to be my birthyear 73.
Just a thought. Maybe check out the stereo feature on the 2013 SG Supra. You run a splitter off the output jack to two separate amps. The electric pick ups go to one amp and the power bridge goes to the other amp so the stereo affect is quasi-electric/acoustic. I have one you can borrow to make a video.
Very nice instrument.

It does scream "1970s" I remember the 1970s as a great time, I was in my Teens and everything was new and a learning experience.
So informative, I struggle with trying to find a good EQ setup on my ‘regular’ gear, I can’t imagine what it’d be like with a true stereo 2 amp rig.
It probably is because I am of the generation that saw the Parker Fly hit the market (and tumble off again), but I think of stereo guitars in terms of those that have the acoustic Piezo pickup. That to my ears is the ultimate stereo guitar sound, a bridge between acoustic simulation and magnetic electric pickup signals. I might be kind of closed minded, but I can't imagine myself getting into a model like this Les Paul.
Not sure if it’s because of the different amps or even just the distance between the pickups, but in true stereo in the middle has a slight chorus effect going on. Edit: it seems the first (or one of them) experiment in stereo was a Gretsch Chet Atkins, but the 2 channels split the strings, not the pickups (low strings one way, high strings the other way)!
Trogly: “So why is this guitar ugly?” The guitar: 👁️👄👁️
I really like this guitar a LOT! What a beautiful instrument. I actually like yours better than the other two you showed. Anyway, keep it because I think it's a great addition to your collection.
Beautiful sound - love the stereo, Fender Deluxe Reverb and Marshall, what's not to like ? I have a Princeton re-issue.
16:40 I would call it a “Jupiter back”! 😂
I do think this guitar did indeed inspire "The Les Paul" guitar, very cool evolution and history!
Really enjoyed this video today. Wow. Love the stereo sound. So cool. I might turn one mine into one of these.🤘😎🎸

I was surprised about that too when searching online!
It would have been great to have heard some hard square wave form tremolo mixed in with that reverb. Not sure what pickup to assign to what effect, though. But therein lies the fun.
Very interesting one ! But, well... i would love it with the blender at the classic toggle switch place, no pickup switch at all, master volume and tone, and yes two output jacks but at the normal LP place, without top route plate ! 😁

Perhaps my favorite guitar on the show to date. I usually just listen to a sampling of the tone demo--nothing against your playing, which is great, but I generally feel like I get a good idea after a few seconds. However, I listened through the tone demo twice!
If I've learned one thing today, it's that a fender deluxe reverb on a clean tone and a Marshall bluesbreaker with a good distortion pedal sounds like heaven and hell
@hkguitar1984

Agreed. My current rig has me playing through an old Silverface Twin Reverb and a Marshall 50W Plexi with a 2x12" cab. The reverb on that old Twin is amazing, especially with all the clean headroom that Twin has.
I kind of like the stereo sounds. I don’t have a stereo guitar, but I do have an ABY pedal. I like to run my Fender Champion clean and my Marshall with a little overdrive. Really makes for a nice articulate but aggressive sound.
Another fun episode Trogly, your collection is getting some really nice gems. Could you tell me what polish you use to clean up your guitars ? They always look so great after their polishing. Thank you and I look forward to your next episode.

My goodness, this is why we love the tones possible only from a fine Les Paul design. Economy version?
Definitely one of the better SOUNDING reviews you have done. An odd ball guitar for sure and I think the “master blend” is really just for convenience: instead of having to adjust each volume you just use it. Not something I’d want but cool to get to see it. That’s why I watch your channel lol.
Interested in a 2014 mine tune. I also have the set of Grover’s that would be a replacement for that type Standard AAA TOP
That bowling pin has a striking resemblance to Ned Flanders.
You have become a world recognized expert on Gibson Norlin era guitars and Gibson's generally. So much good information. Thank you.
That’s one cool guitar. That would be a blast to play around with.
@trog, you have to understand that when Gibson (and other manufacturers) bought pots, especially pots other than your standard 500k ohm (i.e., special pots like the dual pot in this case), they're likely going to have older dates because they simply are not being used in significant quantity during guitar production. Thus, it's not unreasonable that the pot code on the dual pot has a 1969 date code for a 1972 production.
Didn't like it at all until I heard it! How utterly cool this thing sounds is unbelievable!! I can see why Gilmour would want one.
Given the stand rash on the neck I wonder if that mystery area was somehow related. Maybe it was in some kind of display where it was positioned close to the angle it would be when worn with a strap by a player, and so it only shows on the one side.
Ten Years Gone? 😍 What perfect song to use!
I have similar binding discoloration on my Gretsch 5420T where it abruptly changes from natural aging to the stark white. No known damage, repairs or rationale that I can recall.

Beautiful, sounds great !!!
Awesome review, the stereo would be great to play with during a solo like Jimi Hendrix on the recordings of all along the watchtower.
How badass is that?! And I discovered my laptop is capable of stereo, I had no idea. Bonus!
Super cool effect in mono. It sounded clean but also like you were playing in an empty, mile long, hallway.
And then eventually people caught on to the fact that you can just split your signal anytime *after* it leaves the guitar and do the same things by just applying a different EQ to each signal at the two amps.
The stereo aspect will sound even more distinct by moving the amps well apart from each other. Thanks for a most interesting video!
Can anyone name the song he starts playing at 23:40?
