What I've learned: Fender has 5 stages of RELIC guitars. VOS, Closet Classic, Journey Man Relic, Relic, Heavy Relic. Seems strange to consider "New Old Stock" part of the Relic Journey but it makes sense 🟢My Website: www.troglysguitarshow.com 🔴Reverb: tidd.ly/4aFiyhC 🐕 Private Help Sessions: troglysguitarshow.com/help-appraisals/

That’s custom shop…you can do about anything. You can even get NOS with aged nitro, which lacks the scratches and dings. Kind of an odd build, but you can do it. I bought a similar guitar to this with silver sparkle body and headstock, and black double binding, almost identical to Don Rich/Buck Owens Teles. Same 63 hand wound pickups, which sound vintage correct…as they should.

I always assumed the “Relic” mark was so that in many years time the guitar wouldn’t be mistaken for an original. Just my assumption, I don’t know this for fact!
4:00. The relic of the NOS is the yellowed lacquer. Sonic Blue will age into Sutf Green as the top clear coat yellows.
@markcheetah4960

That DOES kinda look like Sonic Blue! Does Daphne Blue fade into a kinda Seafoam Green?
@hkguitar1984
20 күн бұрын
@@markcheetah4960 YES, Daphne Blue can fade into a lighter pale green (from the yellowing clear coat). Also, Sonic Blue can in extreme cases fade into a light gray/blue, it just depends. I have a surf green Strat that started out Sonic Blue, its beautiful the way it's relic job was done, most of the guitar is Surf Green, however where the clear top coat is worn away the Sonic Blue is visible, it kind of fades in and out in the high wear areas. I've decided to only purchase lacquer finished guitars due to how beautifully they age.
They stamp Relic on everything custom shop with nitro to make sure some one does not relic it and sell it as vintage.

I did this mod. It’s fairly simple and it adds another option tone wise. I did my mod when I was getting a Glaser B bender on it too. Felt like a whole new guitar after that! 👍
I LOVE this guitar....California surf style, it's just beautiful. Simple, classy, no flash. Whoever owned it took really good care of it, and played the hell out of it judging by the fret wear. The 9.5 inch radius is a bit more comfortable than the 7.25 inch, but no big deal. Imagine this guitar with a 12 inch radius fretboard shave and some Dunlop 6100 frets!

@@Gordanovich02 Thank you for telling me. I went and looked at the listing. I guess I am mistaken. Just that I owned quite a lot of this stuff back in the day and this is highly irregular. Gorgeous Tele that one. Classic tone, the real deal.
It always says custom shop relic on that stamp, just to avoid fraud with these crafts and selling it as a real vintage. There are two kinds of no skunk stripe Fender necks, slab board (flat joint between the bottom of the board and the neck) and veneer (curved joint). Somewhere in 1963 they switched. It’s harder to see on maple board necks though.

I’ve seen guitars marked as “relic“ that were actually NOS in the late 1990s. A lot of them were left over “cunetto” relics that never actually got the full treatment. I think they were just using up parts. It wouldn’t surprise me if bodies that were set aside and stamped as relics never got the full aging treatment. Just a matter of using up parts…

In the playing demo it's definitely a Telecaster with those twangy tones.

Thank you, Austin for teaching me things I never wanted to know. Super cool Tele, should have played some Waylon or Haggard. At 10:30 it sounded like Bryan Adams' "Summer of 69", but that was a hollow-body Gretsch.

I’ve had a lot of Fender Custom Shop “NOS” guitars that had the RELIC stamped under their pickguards. Looks like Fender is just marking the bodies to make sure their guitars are not confused with genuine 60s or 50s guitars.
I think teles are so cool, even tho I’m a Gibson fan boy haha. I just hate those dingy little headstocks. Put on an oversized Strat or jaguar headstock on that and it’d look so sick. NOS is a widely used term in the automotive industry also. There's someone locally selling a Telecaster in the same color but it's a bit road worn and they are wanting about $1200. I may have missed it but do you think that is the original pickguard ? Looks like it could've been maybe sprayed to look like it was aged in the factory.
I have a 63 custom shop nos and it has the patent numbers under the fender logo on the headstock
Cool tele
that thing was only 2095??? DAMN. I wish I had been bit by the guitar bug a lot earlier than I did :/

No, it's intentional -- so you don't pass it off as a real Nocaster.
I got a new "Seafoam Green" P Bass in 1993?. A color that wasn't offered. I called the factory and they said that it was Sonic Blue, which tint varies drastically from time to time.
If it was the beat up heavy reliced style wouldn't it be stamped ROADWORN under the pickgaurd? I'm thinking by RELIC they mean that the color is faded, yellowish finish. As for the nos, I'd say that was cleaned off years ago.
@johnbriggs3916

No, "Roadworn" is a Made in Mexico finish.
Trogly I always watch your videos, but if you want to answer me, why you always more enthusiastic about Gibson than any other brand? , my opinion is that fender and prs have way better quality than the first one???
Why is it wired like that with a cap (treble bleed) on the volume when it's already wired like a junior? I'm not super familiar with teles is that standard?

I wish gibson did more maple necks.
Perhaps the relicing was tarnishing the blue to green?

Was a maple fretboard an option in 1963?
@roypalfrey5694
21 күн бұрын
There was a time when Fender produced their maple fretboard as a separate piece as opposed to the one piece maple necks. This was concurrent with the rosewood boards to save costs (as were many of Fender's innovations) as the "board-less" neck blanks would have been identical. The exact dates that this happened escape me for the moment but this sounds about right.

Why give it a Nitro finish? It makes a lot of owners go paranoid in their search for 'Nitro friendly' stands & headstock hanging hardware etc. The current quality of 'Polyurethane' coatings have never been better or less reactive.
@squiddysquidster802
21 күн бұрын
Because it’s a vintage spec? I personally love them, I don’t care much for keeping them perfectly clean, and I love seeing the natural aging, something you just don’t get with a poly finish. Plus, they only put nitro finishes on certain guitars and custom shop instruments. You know what you’re getting if you check.
@randrothify
20 күн бұрын
I agree. In most cases Poly wears better and requires less babying. Plus if you like to be careful with your guitars and keep looking immaculately new you won’t get that with nitro. The one exception is if you intend to gig it and expect it to accumulate some road wear and want it look organic. Nitro is better at taking dings and adding some character to the guitar. Dings on guitars with poly look ugly because they crack the finish very acutely around specific areas and the wear doesn’t look continuous and achieved incrementally over many years of playing.
Sounds good! That color makes me look fat though…
Not sure I agree with that take on it being a non-traditional color. Surf Green is an iconic Fender color that is always a favorite. One of Guthrie Trapp’s most played Teles is in Surf Green. The Jeff Beck Signature Strat has long been produced in Surf Green as have many other Strats. Maybe it’s less common for Teles but even the American Vintage ‘63 Tele is offered in Surf Green. Trogly gets a pass because he is not really Fender guy but the lesson here is that more guitar companies should offer this color. Gibson occasionally offers Kerry Green but it’s usually a one-off. Gibson has been upping their color choice game recently and this is one that they should add to their normal rotation. It would make their lineup a little more bright and and may attract some new customers from outside the hard rock/metal genres that are turned off by the darkly serious and gothic overtones of their historic color schemes. I know it goes against their DNA but times they are a changing.
