Tbh, this is some great content from the talksport lads as opposed to the easy to absorb, hyperbolic and incredibly fun takes we usually see. Having more discussion on the game and its transition to mediate technology, social media discourse and the ACTUAL game is very insightful,. I would like to think more of the same would be great but thats not what football is about. I get that from The Athletic. Webb keeps placing emphasis on clear errors, but if VAR is taking up to five minutes to look at 'clear' errors with several people viewing an incident with all the possible angles and then sending the ref over to the monitor, how can they be deemed clear errors?

'Clear error' means the ref made the wrong decision. It doesn't mean 'aww diddiums it was difficult to spot that in real time so even though it was wrong we won't correct it'. @hjc9912

@@TKGriffiths Firstly, you say ‘handball is handball’ but handball wasn’t given against Thiago against West Ham when it was evidently handball, so it isn’t as simple as that, same with offsides they’ve got those decisions wrong despite having the line tech. Secondly, even if they got all handballs and offside right, where a factual decision can be made, the same system system doesn’t work for 50/50 fouls that are still ultimately being determined by a human after minutes worth of viewings on several angles. My point is, at what point are they looking for something wrong instead of it being clear and obvious?

Jim and Simon are not the best duo to give this interviewing opportunity to.
Absolutely preposterous that ex pros are NOT currently allowed in the VAR studio.....so you have refs on the pitch who haven't played the game to a decent level getting a decision wrong because they haven't experienced the challenge at speed in their life, transferring to another person in the VAR studio who also has no experience of that challenge at speed & at a level. It's ludicrous. Get an ex player to review every VAR decision and you will not have any confusion because you guessed it…..they have made that tackle, been on the end of that tackle, made that block, been on the end of an elbow etc etc etc
Think its defo good to hear the thought process on decisions
He puched him and they still got it wrong, it was so blatant
There was one incident at the beginning of the season with VAR incorrectly ruling out a good goal for Juventus and by the next round of games they had introduced semi automated offside across Serie A. Zero BS. Full accountability. British refereeing is rotten to the core and all VAR has done is shine an extra bright light on it.

The biggest issue with VAR is not the tech itself but the subjectivity of the referee operating it. The best way to sort that is have the searchable rule book next to the screen and do a search of the key word of the type of incident taking place at the pitch. That way no referee is interpreting their own version of rules. If there is even a mistake due to a crappy rule, it's on the rule at that point and at the very least it's consistent in every game.

My issue with it is similar to the NFL it seems to be used to make a game more dramatic for the audience, if you ever watch the replays in the last 5 mins of an NFL game if they can keep the game to one score they will use as much of the cameras they need for the desired outcome. My 2nd issue is with these offsides, one you do not know the precise time the ball is released, 2nd we need to changed the rule to foot position not shoulder or head, the World Cup drove me crazy, if in doubt its onside and we are doing millimetres when we don’t do the release of the pass perfectly.
Would be great to see/hear when Man City handled the ball at Everton last season whereby that possibly changed where the title went to, they will never ever show that one, it’s clear the officials were either incompetent or bias

People want consistency. If you're going to scrutinize the build up to a goal for one team, then you better do it to every goal for every team.
The only way VAR is going to work is by VAR being in place at every stadium live game with the 4th reg on the panel instead of VAR covering all game via a building miles away from the game. Also refs and VAR need to start giving post match interviews after every game too
I can see why fifa don't allow it but every ref or var assistant will also support a team too.

If you cannot use people WHO KNOW THE GAME, how can you continue to use people WHO HAVEN'T A CLUE ? The Incompetence shown week in, week out in "The Worlds Best League" is unreal. Best League, Worst referee's. They are atrocious. the decisions they make are diabolical. When the PGMOL make an apology to a team because of this decision or that decision, I think a team should be compensated.... with points. If a Penalty that should have been given, wasn't, that Penalty should be given post match, and the goal stand against the result, if it means it becomes a draw, it is counted as a draw with both teams getting a point, if it becomes a win, that team is given the 3 points. I also think some referees and VAR officials who constantly make these catastrophic decisions, need to be stood down. There is concern I understand, with grass roots referees, quitting the game, well, if you had these incompetent morons to look upto.... you'd change your profession as well. I use the game Man City 1 Leeds 2 as a example of the incompetence in the referees. Liam Cooper, sent off for a serious foul play, for a high tackle on Gabriel Jesus, who afterwards got up and continued to play the game (I don't recall if he completed the game or was substituted later). In the same game, Fernandinho, assaults Raphinha in the second half, Raphinha was IMMEDIATELY substituted, because he could not continue and later that week it was revealed Raphinha had career saving surgery to remove a blood clot in his leg, from that incident..... Did VAR make a decision on that tackle.... NO, it wasn't even looked at. Someones career may have been ended, ENDED.... and the player who did it, was able to continue playing. There are many many more incidents of incompetence, it NEEDS TO STOP.....
If there’s that much discussion for a var call how could all of them not draw the offside lines on arsenal Brentford game discrace
We see the bias of ex players in the media world, would not trust them to be impartial with Var, let alone the ones that are gamblers.

You forgot to add.... 'depending on who the decision is being made for or against'...... At the end.
There are no repercussions for officials making clearly bad decisions. Harry Kanes dubious penalty against Villa at the weekend. He was offside when the move started, so the penalty decision should not even have been considered in the first place. Why didn't VAR pick that up?
Howard is a quality individual.
Wonder what VAR would have made of the de Jong decision in the world cup final. Wouldn't be surprised if it was deemed not clear and obvious.
Let’s listen to a few where you got it completely wrong. There should be plenty
Webb laughing at Danny Murphy when he says he’s more intelligent is hilarious! Only insecure people say they are more intelligent. And because he watched more football then anyone. That’s like saying you’d be a better Poker player from watching it on TV! Or a better police officer because you watch Cops! 😂😂😂
Interesting that Howard Webb’s first comment is to talk about getting it right for the big teams. A tacit confession that VAR is about the big teams. In the PL all of the teams are big teams and all of the games are big games. Its not more important to get it right for Chelsea or Man Utd.
Why are the examples given ones which didn't take 4 minutes or more then the ref had to still have a look is not clear and obvious. It is clearly looking for a reason to change to change. If a decision takes that long it is not clear ir obvious.
The answer is very simple, just hand it over to AI. It will not be biased. ChatGPT could literally do the job of TalkSport so don't tell me that it can't happen.
Interesting+
Made "some" errors, it's amazing how many of those decisions have been made in a way to benefit the "top 6" clubs and against those who aren't, it's almost like there's a bias going on.
I am very very surprised that interpretation of the law wasn’t asked. Interpretation by referees and their decisions are what makes VAR seem inferior. Why did referees interpret that Rashford wasn’t offside when he clearly was interfering? What did referees interpret that the West Ham player fouled Kepa when Kepa fouled the player and ended up disallowing a perfect goal?
Hooper played for Swindon until 16. He is definitely one of the best ones.
The only was VAR will ever work is if the officials in the VAR room can make their decisions not knowing which team is which. Whether that technology - to turn the players into blocks of colour, perhaps one team is red, one is green - is actually available is another matter, but if not and if it continues as it is, then they'll always have their bias.
As fans we just want consistency.

good luck getting that in a sport that has outcomes and infractions based on opinions
See I think that chelsea goal should of stood how can a player get out of the way wen it bounces of the keeper its impossible.
Who the hell wants ex players with all their biases involved in refereeing?
Someone should have asked him about Arsenal Vs Bournemouth
How can an arm out & its offside its football with feet not arms
Offsides need to be changed to foot position. 95% of all offsides could be decided within 5 seconds that way. You obviously use your feet to run into position, so that's where the dis/advantage comes in. I don't care where a player's shoulder is. Basing offsides on shoulders and knees is to take the offside law too literally.
I think VAR reviews should only be at the request of the ref on the pitch. If he's happy with his decision then VAR shouldn't be involved. As for linesmen there should be four of them, one for each half on either side of the pitch. At the moment they do bugger all except leave their job up to VAR.
Any referee who fell for Harry kanes cheating for his penalty ,does not know football, at the weekend.
slow motion needs to stop, it makes all tackles look bad

dead right,it makes every foul look deliberate, var should only check fouls in real time. but handball needs slowmo in order to be sure
Pointless, get rid of VAR. Sort the woeful officials first and foremost
Ex players can never be part of VAR. They all have a club they support, the ones they hate and then local rivals. It can never work.

@@msimms-ft9yv what's the difference? Are you saying that fans wouldn't cheat for the team they support, only ex players? Surely not.
I'm of the opinion we need more high tech, not less, but only because I distrust referees and officials more and more. Surely it's possible to have transponders on the ball and each player so we know exactly where they are in relation to the ball to the centimeter. Offside would just be an automtic beep on the ear piece the ref wears, and a glance down at the app on the device he is carrying. The ball passing the goal line is an instant beep confirmed by AI. Let's get human error and bias out of the game and start using the right tech, not the wrong tech.
They should have asked him why is VAR biased towards man city
Just do away with it. You could live with a ref making a mistake in real time. But it's infuriating that they still make a mistake when they have video evidence to review.
VAR takes too long, when trying to identify clear and obvious errors. Surely there should be a time limit to see if there is an obvious error, maybe 1 or 2 minutes

i agree ,we all want the right decision but if its taking over 2 minutes then it can only be because its a very tight call, so they should go with the original onfield decision.we were told it would be used to put right clear and obvious errors, its gone far beyond that
