The fact is City were robbed in the derby at Old Trafford, in what Keith Hackett, someone Fifa have ranked in the top 100 referees ever, described as “the worst offside call I’ve ever seen”. Did you not see the stone wall foul on Haaland at Everton at the weekend too? How about the penalty Arsenal got vs City at the Emirates, when the ball had already gone, a type of challenge I’ve never seen given as a penalty? How about Liverpool getting three soft penalties recently and a handball against them vs West Ham not given? How about Arsenal getting 10 minutes added on when whenever they were needing a goal?

You don't have to roll out a ref for mistakes only. If there's a situation where a player got (rightly) sent off, or there was a scrap between two players that was managed well, or even just a free flowing game where the ref played an advantage that led to goal, they could be interviewed then, lauding their good decisions and asked about it. The PGMOL can put the ref in front of the press whenever they like so it's not correct to suggest they'll only be interviewed after mistakes.

How would you explain that blunder being the head of the PGMOL? One would assume that drawing the line is a mandatory protocol, especially where the actions leading to a goal is in question.

Simon is bang on with this. We need to see the video and hear the audio of how and when the officials get it wrong... Also the nervousness around being interviewed after games. If it's every game then it should be when officials have had a "good game" and can also get the plaudits for their skills. But most importantly be held accountable as they are certainly not at the moment.

Bigger Picture: You can't buy better Referee. They have what they have. Referee in football has to make more subjective decisions than the objective ones. This is not the case for loads of other sports like Rugby, American Football, etc. Their game is stop-start, Football is not. Here we need to accept a trade off between correct decisions and time. Overall, the only solution I see, is a long term one, which is to make the Referee job attractive with high salary and attract loads of applicants and try to increase the pool size to choose from.

The whole point of VAR is to prevent in the moment mistakes. Points are what's important, not an apology or disciplinary after the fact, it doesn't matter then. Until we have officials mic'd up and we can hear reasonings for their decisions, then fans will assume the worst about those officials, whether that be team bias or just ineptitude. Unfortunately, I see the argument of better being silent and thought of as those things, than to speak and remove all doubt. I believe in VAR as a concept, but good lord they don't do themselves any favours.

As a Forest fan, I think we've been fairly treated. Decisions have gone for us and against us. Happy with the refereeing, too. I think overall, considering were at the bottom and the bigger clubs have players that are better at conning the refs, I think the refs have been good in our games. Some decisions, like cheap freekicks against us have led to goals that mean we've lost the game. But in reality, there were a thousand other moments that led to us losing the game.

You could even have ex players & managers etc & maybe even fans of different clubs as guests to give their opinions on them which will give both sides an insight into how they see things.

I remember the controversial goal given when Thierry Henry handled the ball not once but twice when scoring for France V RO Ireland in a play off for a place in the World Cup, if Webb and his cronies where on VAR that night, they would deem these incidents as accidental handball and the goal stands.

I am very very surprised that interpretation of the law wasn’t asked. Interpretation by referees and their decisions are what makes VAR seem inferior. Why did referees interpret that Rashford wasn’t offside when he clearly was interfering? What did referees interpret that the West Ham player fouled Kepa when Kepa fouled the player and ended up disallowing a perfect goal?

When mancs are forever whinging about Liverpool getting 5 PKs in a season to win the title by a gobsmacking 18 points, then Klopp pointing out that MU got 14 PKs the same season is a legitimate point to make. A manager is right to turn the argument around and point out the context. Those who are the most upset about this should look in the mirror for whom to blame.

@@ComradeOgilvy1984 no, it is not legitimate to compare penalties given to 2 different teams. It would be legitimate to count how many penalties were given that shouldn't have been or vice versa, and compare those. That's not what Klopp or the media did at the time. They just said "too many penalties for United". Referees agreed apparently and just stopped giving United penalties.

I don't think there's a such a huge problem with referees making a mistake, it's when something like a player being clearly tripped in the penalty area occurs, and the person, who has a system to show him multiple replays from different angles, refuses to believe his own eyes, goes along with an incorrect decision. That's when the integrity of the officials is brought into question. Also, the fact that officials seem to have different interpretations of the laws of the game does not make it any better.

You're right but refs should be held accountable and explain their reasoning for coming to a decision if they have had a bad game. The problem is however there are a lot of sticky areas in the law of the game which needs ironing out. I'm sick of hearing how different refs have different perceptions and interpretations of the law, they've over complicated very simple footballing rules. All refs should have the same perceptions of the law if they've been trained properly.

And the worst thing is, I don’t think they understand how bad it actually is. I meant talking about interviews after the game would end up only being negative. Well yeh. The PGMOL is a disaster. English Refereeing is a joke. It amazes me that when the same English referees officiate in European and International tournaments backed by VAR they are not vulnerable to these "human errors." The problem is not the rules and tools but rather how they are interpreted and used. The PGMOL along with the FA and Premier League are clearly going against the FIFA standards and that is the reason we have so many problems with refereeing inconsistencies in our Leagues.
