Wow, I think my favorite part of this whole podcast was to see how composed and Mel was when it came to a difference in opinion between her and the guest speaker (whose book I will probably never read given his attitude and his complex treatments). I understand that research is difficult to explain and nuance. But Mel just proves again and again how she always puts her audience first and why she is just an amazing influence and role model inn society. She inspires me to speak up for what I believe in and never backdown. Amazing.

Procrastination is a coping mechanism. There is usually something behind it, like a trauma, imposter syndrome etc. As with everything, like alcoholism, eating disorders etc, it has a reason behind it that you have to face and deal with to eliminate. It's not easy.

  • @theforensicbadass

Yes exactly. Everyone I know who has suffered traumatic narcissistic abusive relationships has a severe problem with procrastination after surviving. It's part of the freeze response where the amygdala is so swollen, and the hippocampus is so shrunken that the limbic system is damaged in the survival state. Trauma survivors cannot shame themselves for procrastinating. They have to heal the brain damage first before they can do daily tasks that healthy normal people do very easily. The trauma Survivor should never shame themselves that they procrastinate. Maybe theyre the 20% of the population he was talking about because domestic violence is an epidemic since the quarantine.

  • @the.toxic.phoenix

@@theforensicbadass domestic abuse has been an epidemic for centuries, unfortunately, but yes, survivors of DA are prone to procrastination. They're not the sole demographic but I bet they take up a large percent. Usually people put off taking an action because of fear of the outcome, maybe they think they won't be good enough, or the unknown of what comes after etc. I didn't particularly vibe with the way this guy talked about it, like it was a life choice we could just wake up one day and ditch. The reward system works for me though, I promise myself something if I tick off something I've been procrastinating over. And breaking tasks down into smaller steps, can you do one small step today and another tomorrow, etc.

The last video mel did on procrastination was extremely helpful. It went over identifying triggers......and it went over talking yourself through the moment and releasing the guilt and self loathing to move past it.....and it helped me greatly. I recommend everyone go back and watch that one. Asking what happens in the brain does not mean that we are blaming a defect there....and run away from any psych that diseegards brain chemistry outright like this....run away fast is my advice....... This guys answer is to just stop doing it cause if you keep doing it you are a self centered and an excuse maker.... Then he offers up the reward yourself with a fun activity that has been the go to crappy advice for decades...... He says procrastination is from the in ability to delay gratification...then offers up delayed gratification as the answer. ..... Also he decided he was interviewed and critiquing her right off.... No thanks on this guest.. ....

Do you have a link (or date) for the video you recommend? I had a lot of issues with this guy's advice since it doesn't mesh with many of the things I have observed. For example, the "gene" for being shy. My daughter was shy from day 1. Honestly she cowered away from everybody for the first months of her life. My son was the exact opposite. Ready to accept anyone. This carried on for most of their lives, my son the extrovert and my daughter the introvert. Thanks

The man has done an incredible amount of research soley and with others so he really does understand the topic and the causes. Could he be warmer and fuzzier, he sure could, but that's just not his personality. It was a good interview and I liked how Mel questioned him and didn't back off. I prefer honest discussions like this where things can get uncomfortable over other podcasts where people are so busy patting each other on the back that you really don't get any meat. Great job/

It's a shame....Dr. Ferrari's delivery was all wrong, and so the message he was trying to conveyx was lost. He was rude to Mel. Insulting even. It's hard to take the advice of someone who comes at someone with negativity, and then is offended when asked to breakdown his points for the listeners. His attitude caused me to tune him out, and I've NEVER done that with any of Mel's podcasts, as they usually stay on a positive note. Mel handled this man well, and it's a testament to all that she stands for, and how she wants her audience to receive good advice. Mel, please don't have Dr. Ferrari on again. I have been late and a procrastinator forever. Doesn’t matter what the reward or punishment is. Ive been fired for being late.ive been late to things im excited about. It doesn't matter. Its a loaded problem with many causes. Time blindness is a big one. Overthinking every decision & decision fatigue while preparing is another. Object permanence is another issue along with disorganization. It is totally possible to be on time or early but it requires a perfect orchestra of events which require preparation. I also have 2 toddlers which adds a few unpredictable variables. This isnt a cop-out by any means. It is my responsibility to sort out problem areas and establish effective routines. Dont let clutter bully you! Let go of the extra stuff and unnecessary obstacles that make routine tasks difficult. It is very important to be mindful and present during boring tasks instead of letting your thoughts wander. Think of what can be streamlined to lessen the dread of doing it or a way to make it engaging. Line up your target instead of aiming in the dark, praying you hit something. Things make more sense when you realize small changes lead to better and more consistent results.

Hi Mel, I love that you see the best in your guests and that you take and broadcast positive messages from the discussions you have with them. HOWEVER my (personal) opinion here is that Dr Ferrari needs to be better informed, and he damages your message of "don't make yourself wrong" and also your pledge to go by the science and research. I feel his 20% of chronic procrastinators might well be predominately made up of the traumatised and/or Neurodiverse section of all societies. The study he referred to, made up of two NT people and a ND person, informing his view (I think of whether people actually work better under pressure) is actually farcical to me?!? Did I hear that correctly?!? When you asked him hard questions he mocked you for asking them, then gave a wishy-washy response. As a newly diagnosed ADHDer (which you helped me recognise in myself, and I am forever grateful for that) I have spent the last few years reading lots about neuroscience, and he made my eye twitch. I am not surprised you asked the questions you did. Your ADHD and Dyslexia DO put you at a disadvantage in this area, it's FACT, not an excuse. Of course ND people can use strategies to help, and should be proactive, but we all also have to be kind to ourselves (as you rightly said) and although Dr Ferrari said he didn't want to be rude and shaming, that IS how he came across. I feel someone who loves the mind and research, as his title would suggest, would have read up on neuroscience and welcomed your question about the brain/neurochemistry?!? To me, this man comes across as a little *chauvinistic, rather ill-informed, and damaging to your overall message. I feel you need a hug after that interview 🤗 you are doing a lot to change yourself and us for the better, and I applaud that. This interview was a miss-hit, in my opinion, however x (*edited as had put "misogynistic" and that wasn't quite the right word)

This was a difficult podcast for me to watch/ listen to. I am not sure why he had the arrogant dismissive attitude he did as an "educator" when Mel had questions. All I got from his talking in circles was that 1. Procrastination is not a time management problem 2. Stop making excuses 3.Procrastination is a learned behavior you need to change 4. You need CBT for personalized strategies, he's not willing to give specific examples. After this interview and his demeanor I'm definitely NOT feeling inclined to rush out and buy his book, which i often do after Mel's podcasts, and I feel is the only reason he did this interview. Her composure was unmatched and I applaud her for ability to remain calm and unwavered in her goal to help get us valuable information. Thank you, Mel! I'll stick to the 5 Second Rule, as I've personally gotten far more from that!❤

This is me and I’m grateful for not being alone. Healing the root cause of WHY I procrastinate by acknowledging that this habit I’ve created earlier on was to cope during a stressful period of my younger life. I realized that I’ve programmed my nervous system to either go for FIGHT/FLIGHT/FAWN/FREEZE. Committing to the little promises I made with myself is IMPORTANT. Unlearning PROCRASTINATION is definitely great news. I’m making progress now no matter what. Our brains 🧠 are plastic, meaning we can replace old neural networks that’s causing any unproductive habit that’s holding us back from creating a life we truly deserve to have and enJOY. Some days are challenging and I’m here for it. “Old dogs can learn new tricks that are healthy, fun, and easy to use in our daily lives.” We just have to figure out what works for us. It’s all about enJOYing the process instead of being attached to the RESULT. I am willing to create new happy and healthy habits. Now. Thank you Mel & Dr. Ferrari. ❤

Why my life has already improved from watching Mel Robbins videos is bc I can watch them as me. Knowing that I have accomplished good things that i wanted, have helped others and am proud of. So many other people (like this man) come out in a way that can make you feel hopeless if you cant get it all right today. And also as if youre a loser filled with excuses. I'm sure his approach works for others. Thanks Mel Robbins.

I was procrastinating even listening to this video Mel. Everyone I know who has suffered traumatic narcissistic abusive relationships has a severe problem with procrastination after surviving. It's part of the freeze response where the amygdala is so swollen, and the hippocampus is so shrunken, that the limbic system is damaged in the survival state. Trauma survivors cannot shame themselves for procrastinating. They have to heal the brain damage first, before they can do daily tasks that healthy normal people do very easily. The trauma Survivor should never shame themselves that they procrastinate. Maybe theyre the 20% of the population he was talking about w chronic procrastinating, because domestic violence via narcissistic and psychopathic abuse is an epidemic since the quarantine. Thank you Mel for this informative interview. I won't give anything to the guests who was nothing but a pompous ass with his accusations and he goes superiority trying to demean you over n over again. I would love if Dr Ferrari would study trauma survivors and procrastination because we could certainly use some help to feel less shameful about this chronic condition. The doctor Ferrari would probably traumatize people worse because he's nothing but a superior pompous creep who clearly has severe abuse of power. We won't ever let our gas tanks be near empty ever. Survival. We will always be on time. Survival. But we have severe procrastination when it comes to making simple phone calls, or going to court, or filing paperwork, getting bills paid, speaking up, or standing up for ourselves or even being able to focus at our jobs or getting our daily tasks done. Chronic procrastination rules our survivalship. Pete Walker in his famous book complex PTSD from surviving to thriving, talks about chronic procrastination as symptomology of emotional flashbacks and inner critic introjects from the abuser, from the psychological manipulation and the brain damage that it causes.

Thank you for the information! I never knew that this kind of coping mechanisms are also part of the “brain damage” so to speak. I had a narcissisic parent growing up and I wanted to ask: how to start healing properly (especially brain)? *not a native speaker, sorry if I got something wrong

  • @theforensicbadass

    @theforensicbadass

@@JulieK-fu1dy You are allowed to ask any kind of questions without any fear or shame or guilt that you did something wrong. Chronic procrastination also makes us trauma survivors doubt ourselves when we make a decision to speak for instance or ask a question. There's much more than CBT therapy as Dr Ferrari recommends. There's plenty of other modalities trauma survivors can utilize. Just promise yourself you will never shame yourself ever again for any doubtful decisions or procrastinating. For many of us coming out of family narcissistic Dynamics as a scapegoat, it could take us years girl. It could take us the rest of our lives to make our own decisions and feel safe. And there's no shame in that either. Sending you hugs of healing, strength endurance and validation on your recovery journey ❤❤❤

100% this. I responded to someone else's comment regarding ADHD before getting very far into this interview and it only got worse as it went on. In addition to my ADHD, I have been diagnosed with CPTSD and have been stuck in a chronic freeze response for years now. It is a real problem and his research sounds incredibly myopic to the point of lacking any validity at all.

I have stopped looking at the forest and I now focus on the leaves. Every time I put anything away or bin rubbish I high five myself, the idea that I start to create dopamine hits rather than the ugggh feeling. And I believe its working the house is not all tidy, but my perception or relationship to doing the work is slowly changing.
