I had a really long conversation with a woman in the parking lot during covid after wards she thanked me so much for listening to her. She was so lonely and it meant the world to her. I have talked to other strangers at length. It is always a great time. Actually during the height of the pandemic the thing I missed the most was those little interactions with strangers. Or as fight club calls it single serving friends. 😊 Those little interactions and polite exchanges mean so much.

I'm the same way! ❤ My family doesn't understand why I love talking to strangers. But you never know what they're going through. And we all need to be acknowledged. I don't know how many times I've heard. Someone was contemplating ending their lives. But because someone said hi or whatever. They changed their mind. You never know the impact you have on others. Or that it might lead to a possible friend.

Love this. I'm 54 and I talk to strangers all the time and I love it. Even if I don't have conversations, I try to smile at people as I'm passing them by and they usually smile back. I've had people approach me and tell me that I have such a beautiful, genuine smile and it made their day. It was such a heartwarming feeling that I made their day with just a smile. ❤

That has happened to me twice, flying! One was a older woman Margie who lost her husband and never had kids! She was heading to Florida and I to Portland Oregon! We developed a beautiful friendship that lasted over 15 years. We never saw each other again, but we sent cards and letters! She would sent me special gifts, just because! She became like a 2nd mom! I loved sending her Swiss Colony when the holidays came around! I was so sad to hear that she passed! She was a beautiful artist! I am so glad that we exchanged pictures through the mail! I really miss her! I never got to say goodbye! The other young girl Catlin was just starting law school in Los Angeles! She is now a attorney, married and just had a baby girl! We communicate on Facebook!😊❤

I work for Sara lee, putting the bread on the shelves at the stores around town and at Walmart. I acknowledge and speak to almost everyone, and give a sincere compliment, when I feel the spirit move me. My coworker said to me oh wow, you'll talk to anyone and everyone! She said it like a put down or I took it that way, from her tone. The reason I love my job is that I get to interact with so many people everyday. I try and make people smile, or even laugh sometimes, soothe a mother whose kids are out of control, and let the clerks working there know that I feel their pain! It's the best.

I swear, I will think of what you wrote, every time I see Sarah Lee products on the grocery store shelves from here on, while shopping. You just raised the bar by your kindness & generosity towards people, which completely upgrades that brand in my books. If Sarah Lee were smart, they would promote you to operate their “Kindness Department”….. a skill that is usually overlooked & often taken for granted. They & the people you meet daily are truly gifted by your presence. The world needs more heartfelt ❤people like you, to heal the often deeply hurting Planet. You are clearly like a walking prayer. 🙏 Keep up the often subtle, yet always appreciative gestures towards others. It lights up this world. Amen! 🙏

Hi Mel!!! This is Adriana from Austria🤗I do listen your podcasts since 1 year and to be honest this one really was an absolute blast! I did cry with you and at the end of it I feel extremely energized and optimistic! I was born in a country where to initiate a conversation as a woman was considered dangerous and something to avoid. But after I graduated I started traveling the world, working in a lot of countries and finally getting settled in Austria. I am still amazed, been part of the international community, how happy I am meeting new people and connect with them! I guess as I am in my fifties I will have a happier life and this podcast confirms it. Thank you for existing and for your podcasts. Love you, Adriana

People are beautiful and you can miss out on a great connection. I am that person that will talk to everyone including strangers, I get people in my family or friends says "you always talk to strangers, why" I tell them yes cause this unexpected connection can change your world or theirs. You may absolutely love this connection and think back after you gain this friendship, you will tell yourself thank god I did connect with this person. Okay. This is serendipitous for me. Last week I was watching an eggplant recipe video on KZread with English subtitles. What captured me more than the recipe itself was the music and lyrics in the background. I found the music on another KZread channel and commented to the person who uploaded the music how I got there! She was amused, and we have been having beautiful and meaningful chats all week since. A meeting of the souls sort of. Thank you for always sharing with all of us, Mel. You open us up to possibilities and today’s video, happiness through new connections. 😊

The patients always appreciate my complements. I once had a patient ask me what if you can’t find something to complement a person. I told the patient I will find at least one thing to complement a patient. It could be their nails, hair, glasses, shoes, eyes, smile, or something. Just find at least one thing to complement. Have a great day Mel! 😊

Loved this episode and the reminders about making opportunities to form friendships. However, my experience has been a bit different. I usually love starting the convo & meet others, but it doesn’t always go smoothly. It's easy to compliment people, and they usually appreciate it, but not everyone stops to chat. I've also met great people whom I connect with (at least that is how I feel ;) ) but they tell you they don't have room for new friends. They suggest to create your own pod, which is good, but most people already have their own circles, and often not willing to expand their circles. Socioeconomics can make this even tougher, especially these days. and neighbors these days seem to stay behind closed doors, and I tried :-) Maybe it is me, but I still hold hope that I will meet new friends, as the older I get, the more they dissapear. I truly believe that it's important to stay positive and keep trying, but it’s also okay to acknowledge that building new friendships isn’t always as easy as saying hi.

Was bullied for 6 years at school when i was a kid and that made me learn how to live without "craving" those connections but i somehow turned into a funny and lovable person , truth is things changed as i grew up being the one who pushed people away and the more i push people away the more people get interested and want to stay in touch .... but truth is deep inside i want to have normal interactions with people and be consistent ! I have some good friends but if i see one of them today , for sure i wont see them again before 3 or 4 months or even more ! Thank you Mel for this ❤

It happened to me traveling by train after a long day. I sat opposite to a woman who’s face I studied secretly. She didn’t look at me. After a while she made a phonecall, ,a very polite one,to a man, asking him, if he could pick her up at the train station. I am German, she talked to him in French, a language I loved since my childhood, sounded like music to me , this special day and then. I hadn’t spoken French or listened to for 20 years, and I got the tone, the meaning, the mood. I understood he would pick her up. She looked at me and said, I like your glasses. You look great .It seemed to me she was a totally different person before. This made my day great.

Omg! Yes! I love hearing these stories. Makes me realise that I’m not as weird as I thought! I talk to strangers all the time! Most people are great, others look at me like I’m weird… sadly. My recent experience was probably one of the best. Let me share this…. I was a city girl all my life have gone to the same trendy city hairdresser in the city since 2008. Having found the love of my life and moved to the countryside, I found myself still travelling to this hairdresser- a 4 hour round trip now! Well while I was having my hair done I heard this lady next to me talking about something random on instagram… I churned in a comment and we kept talking and laughing, as though we had known each other for years. Turns out she used to like in this city too but had since moved 2 states away but continues to fly up every couple on moths to get her hair done. Well now we both make sure we book our hair appointments on the same date and enjoy catching up and chatting while getting our hair done! Go figure. How good is life! People really are amazing. I always feel so good after a visit to my hairdresser and it has nothing to do with how good my hair looks!!!

Go Sawyer! Unexpected connections 👍 agree totally, such connections energises one. For example, I ‘chanced’ upon your show, Mel, on social. Just what I needed to hear. Still listening, would think the same approach applies with connections online

OMG...you so destined for me in your post cast...I grew up with a father who, spoke to everyone and later lived with an aunt that did the same thing. I'm a product of these two people. I have had the same of smiling, talking, and short conversations, with so many people; that have opened so many doors of friendship that enriched my life. Learning about people that have been amazing people. I can remember so many awesome events. I plan to even step up my game. Love you.

Hi Mel! Loved this episode. Guess what, there’s this guy at work I always see him tidying up the coffee station and always thought he was not the friendliest person. Most I would say is hi (if I did). Today I went a step further and asked how he was, and managed to have a conversation. It felt good!

Hi Mel, I’ve been listening and watching you for past 8 months…found you on insta initially. I look forward to every Monday and Thursday for each new episode. I’m a dentist in the UK ( raised in Kansas born in Middle East ) . You’re my car buddy. Today after that listened … thought I’d put it to the test! As I said as driving along , got phone call from my GP office for review of my prescription. Almost dismissed the call as annoying! Turns out .. doctor at the other end is originally from same country as me and we had so much in common! We spoke to over 40 minutes! I actually ended up telling her that I’m listening to your podcast on random connections. And she said … I’ll add on to that in saying that she chose my file randomly out of 2000 patients to call today ! We’ve made plans to meet up! Day got better after that! Sending lots of love your way Mel. Abi xxx

I compliment strangers on their outfits or glass frames if they are bold and funky. I tend to make friends everywhere I go. It used to bother me that strangers would walk up to me and start talking or venting about something (usually their husbands haha). But now I see it as my superpower! I am training as a life coach to use this gift to help others when these connections happen. Not looking to charge for this. Just building on this skill for myself to pass it on.

It all began on a bus tour in Italy 2007. Australian family, my husband, myself and my Mum waiting at the bar in our hotel for a pre dinner drink before our get to know you dinner. SItting at a table next to us was an American family, 3 adult children and their Mom waiting for the bar to open too. We struck up a conversation, had a wonderful trip and became lifelong friends. Karen (Amercian - Chicago) and myself Victoria (Perth, Western Australia) have visited each other's countries several times, along with our husbands) touring Australia and the US/Canada, attended each other's children's weddings in Australia and the US, celebrated grandchildren and our amazing Mother's living until their 90's. Her brother and my husband have the same names 'Robert James', her sister and my husband's sister same names of Susan, her husband and my father-in-law same names of Peter and our confirmation names are both 'Bernadette', go figure 😂 Soul Sisters, catching up with them this year in Seattle before our Alaskan cruise. All this from just one hello - BLESSED ❤❤❤

I worked retail for 49 years. I tried to make connections with people a lot. Whether it was.... That color looks really good on you. That hair style looks really nice on you. Thats a cute top. Things to bring smile. My great niece ( who I have raised since she was 4 and that makes her mine) used to try to stop me from talking to people. I think she was a little embarrassed and maybe didnt want to share me. lol She is 19 now and last year she started working at a coffee place where they take turns being outside taking orders. So when they are outside or inside they have to make small talk. A few months ago were getting food at Sams Club. We were waiting with others to get our orders and an older gentleman started making small talk with us. Before I could say anything my niece started talking to him. Who is this girl?! I smiled to myself and as we were walking out she said Why did I talked to him. My little flower is blossoming and opening up. This was a great podcast. Thank you.
