Exciting discoveries emerging from the field of aging research are pointing to a radically new approach to how we deal with getting older. Science is getting to the root cause of why aging is often accompanied by a decline in function and decrepitude. If we understand the why-the root causes and the changes they trigger in our biology, in our interconnected web of molecules and cells and tissues-then we can transform our health and well-being and extend our lives, both our healthspan and our life span.
In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I discuss how and why we age. What I’ve discovered has blown my mind and changed the way I approach my own health and the health of my patients. I’ve compiled it all into a new book called Young Forever, which comes out on February 21, 2023. Learn more and preorder the book at youngforeverbook.com.
This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and ButcherBox.

I’ve been watching a lot of these videos and your explanation of how our system works, makes the most sense…no, we don’t get a handbook when we are born, of how to take care of ourselves, how to prevent aging or how to heal ourselves from within…but it makes perfectly good sense to watch what we eat (whole foods, eliminate sugar), to avoid environmental toxins, and to partake in regular exercise. I do hope that medical schools will start teaching and putting more emphasis on sound nutrition than they have in the past, and without the pervasive influence of Big Food…

Not every day it works for every person. On the standard American diet I can wait and I feel horrible. I did keto for six years and I lost weight but I still felt horrible. My asthma was out of control. I was starting to get more and more arthritis in my hips and my lower G.I. system were still dumping on me every morning to the point of Affecting where I went in the morning as far as traveling or going somewhere to shop or eat. I started carnivore April 2022 to see if it would help because I had found more and more doctors were on it. I already knew Dr. Barry was on it but I found Dr. Baker and Dr. chaffee who are both from my state. And then I found even more people and I have been following them ever since. I’m in my 10 and within two days of starting. I actually went normal for the first time in over 20 years. My asthma cleared up to where I wasn’t using an inhaler at all and my Hip started feeling so good I didn’t walk with a limp or worry about turning wrong. I tried to eat some raw fruits and vegetables in August last year and by that evening I could not walk. It hurts so bad in my left hip. I try to avoid vegetables because they cause inflammation. I can eat fruit. I just don’t eat it very often because of the fructose. What has worked for me is basically meat and eggs, I’ve lost weight. My pain has gone down substantially. I don’t use my inhaler and my lower G.I. has healed. I don’t have a lot of problems that people talk about when switching. I actually switched overnight and not gradual because that’s how I did keto. I just got my blood work done and on Wednesday I get the results. I’m pretty excited to see what’s going on although I was disappointed I didn’t get to choose what I wanted tested. I’ve been studying up on the whole cholesterol thing. I’m pretty sure he didn’t check the size of my LDL and I’m pretty sure if I’m elevated in cholesterol he’s gonna want me on a Staten because that’s how my doctor is. But I absolutely will not, and I am armed.

Everybody's diff. I went exteam both ways, a lot and zero, on sugar, flour, fat. I also did moderation and I can handle the slight effects but to be better is my goal. My feet my hands my mind my skin my aching with movement are all effected buy my food choices. I am midway to start fasting patterns and very little food when not fasting. I'm reading labels and no nitrates and phosphates and no coloring and added sugar and carb/fiber ratio and from only grass fed to some grain fed and cheese with whole milk and no chems so this is all confusing so I'm hitting a fasting diet with low food intake and then will build from that and most likely I will follow Dr. H' s peagan diet an life style and only clear tequila and black Coffee.. I was a schooled pastry chef, chocolatier, culinary chef, from 14 yrs old working at a pizza place on long island, NY. wholesale high-end dessert biz, restaurant on south beach FL, and a year in Denver Colorado perfecting edibles recipes for a well financed weed company .. -That homeless guy Now in a camper an storage unit on bike still with 3 jobs as they need me and with a good friend who's an Amish guy with a hobby farm...

Sure seems like Health Insurance Companies and Medicare would be receptive to a WFPB vegan message. It would save them money on health care costs. This could off set the lobbying by food manufacturers. Maybe educating health Insurance Companies and Medicare administrators should be a priority. Health Insurance companies might even push doctors to take nutrition more seriously by paying for nutrition counseling of patients.

I am very interested in IF and eating a low carb/sugar diet, and i personally follow a fairly strict and mindful health routine, however my father has always eaten a very high sugar diet, he has sugar coated frosties for breakfast with a banana, biscuits with tea, a normal meat ,veg and potatoes for lunch, fruit crumble/custard for pud, for tea he often has pork pie or sandwiches, cake, icecream followed by extra strong mints or chocolate. On average my father has only four mugs of tea/coffee a day and he tells me that he has never drunk plain water. My mother has a similar diet, so my question is how have they avoided diabetes type 2, cancers etc given that they are in their eighties. They do have health issues, take pain killers etc and this affects their mobility but considering my dad is 87 this year and has never really given a thought to how his diet impacts his health. My mother in law has smoked all her life, eats a diet high in processed foods and will be 88 later this year, but i wonder whether she would have had four recent fractures following falls in the last two yrs had she eaten a different diet.

I don't believe I should be fasting! I'm a 64-year-old woman who is 4'10", and under 80 pounds. I eat super healthy diet- no processed foods, no sugar unless I go out to dinner which is once a while - and even then, I usually get grilled fish & veg - maybe a piece of bread. What say you?

I fast for 16 hrs every day, i feel that i have far more energy, good general health when i only eat during an eight hr window, you could do IF but you would need to increase nuts, protein and good fats as they would help to boost your calories, avocado are super healthy, brazil nuts high selenium and high in calories, i am 5 ft 4ins and 119lbs and feel my height and weight is about right for me. i focus on trying to keep inflammation low and bone strength high. i also take AKG, NAC and spermidine as they have been shown to increase longevity.

@@sarahwallis3216 no, I don't think fasting is great when you are older and don't need to lose weight and already have great energy... I already have a great diet of lean poultry, fish, tons of veg, nuts, seeds, avocados, sweet potatoes... I'm good ;). I don't think everyone should be fasting - especially older adults who don't need to lose weight.

Health care costs are out of control. Going WFPB vegan can save money, pain and suffering from disease. Lower your chance of high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer by going vegan. Hospitals, doctors offices and schools should be places where good nutrition is taught and provided not places that contribute to disease and obesity. It is crazy the hospitals are feeding people the very food that caused the heart disease, high blood pressure or cancer that they are treating. Every person in the hospital should receive some nutrition education before being released. Every doctor visit should be an opportunity to educate patients about how food choices impacts their health outcomes. The fact that doctors do not get nutrition training as part of their training makes no sense. Medicare and Medicaid should require nutrition education as part of patient care. Focus should be on food choices.
